Profe - INXS was a late 80's band but not quite a hair band. Their singer comitted suicide bringing their progress to a screaching hault but the members are now looking for a fresh new face and voice to launch a come back. The show is on CBS. Mondays they a 30 minute "reality" episode of all the hopefulls at the house, showing you the clinic of week, the band member sit down and do quick critiques of each singers performance the week before, etc. Tuesdays are an hour with each hopeful performing and then on Wednesday they do a half hour where the bottom three vote getters from the viewing public each perform an INXS song. The band members let go of one of the three (or in tonights case 2 or the three).
I like the show because unlike many, you don't see the laughably bad singers, and the evaluations are gearing towards the positive and how to correct the negatives as opposed to amplifying the negative.
Also there is one woman on the show that is just a kick ass powerhouse singer. She is awesome. She's not a girly girl, she not a butch type, she is simply a frontperson with a monster presence and great voice. I love that.

Linda - the promos were great. If the show is as good as the promos I think it'll be another success for FX. Besides - great time slot for us night owls

LInda - Did you catch it? Great show! Nice little homage to M*A*S*H with the introduction of the theme song, and it's great when a serious drama allows it's self a little humor.
"Don't you want to know why they call me Double Wide?" "Uh...No Ma'am!"

Oh DARN it anyway... no, I didn't. But I will next Wednesday night for sure.
Sounds like you really enjoyed it, great. I guess with the opening show....they starting setting up the relationships between the soldiers and their families at home. Hope they give a little preview of the show from this week, at the beginning of next weeks show.

Basically they just introduced the characters, and you learn why everyone had their specific nicknames. Except for the women, we do not know how Double Wide (married mom of an infant -nicknamed Spooky- whose husband is home caring for him), or Mrs B (attitude laden and morose) got their kick names. The others are...
Angel - went to New York for a try out for a choir group and did not make the cut, mad and too embarrassed to go home a failure, he signed up for the army. Once you hear him sing you know where the name came from
Dim - 'When they found out I went to Cornell and still ended up in the Army they though I must be stupid"
Smoke - bit of an attitude and likes to get high
Sgt Scream - self explanatory.
Mad Cow - troop leader called that by his troops because it's "the disease that eats mens brains"
and Bo - "You mean that's your name? Where I come from no one is actually named Bo" Young kid that was the questioner to find out how everyone got their name and finally reveals it's because he does not have one. Married, got a football scholarship from A&M but not enough to cover costs so he joined the army. Plans to use the GI plan to supplement the scholarship when he gets out.
(there are a couple others I don't remember off hand)
You basically get to see their interaction plus pieces of video mail that they send home. Bochco says that the series will examine numerous different aspects of the troop experience without making conclusions.
I think it has a good balance of humor (dry and sarcastic), drama, action and definitely a bit of gore (last night you see an RPG decimate the torso of an oncoming fighter as the legs continue to move forward a step then fall) but I think it's going to be as much a breakout hit that anything in it's late time slot can be. I just looked at my cable guide and they are showing a rerun of it Saturday night. Catch it if you can.

fenix - I didn't see your last post until just now when I came to let you know there was a repeat tonight on FX and I was able to view it.
Wow!!! I think you're right....from this first episode it does look like this is going to have a real good chance of being a great series.
You did a fantastic job of describing the characters too, thanks for taking the time to do so. Having watched the program before reading your character descriptions....you did a terrific job of giving a super/excellent detailed description of each of them.
It was difficult for me watching the parts with the injuries taking place....especially the soldier with his leg blown off....screaming. Reminded me of some of the VN films....where they showed the reality of what our soldiers experienced on the ground. That is the reality of war....any war.
And, lol on the nick name of 'dbl wide'. My Indiana relatives usually describe the size of a women's rear....using ax-handles as a form of measurement....lol...one ax-handle wide....two ax-handles wide.

LOL on the Axe handles. Do they also refer to cellulite as "Hail Damage". I about fell over the first time I heard that one.
Glad you liked the run down and that you caught the show. I don't know what it is about Wednesday but the programming is great. Next season is going to put my DVR to the test now that I am also hooked on the HBO series The Wire. Between that, Over There, The West Wing and Law & Order I'm going to just start taking that night off from computer duty.
Netflix members that haven't seen it should add The Wire to their Queue. It's every bit as well written and acted as The Sopranos. It is set and shot in Baltimore and is about a police unit pieced together from the force misfits investigating a street drug gang and the depth of the money lines, the second year adds new variables in terms of the Balitmore docks and their workers. They are in the midst of the replay of the third season now but I just discovered the series and one thing I know is you cannot come in halfway thru a seaon. More than a 13 episode series it's more like a 13 hour movie. Get the DVDs!

lol...not that I've heard...but that's a good one.
The hail 'cellulite' would be more appropriate down here in MO and AR...where car trunks, tops and hoods have golf-ball size 'pock' marks all over them. And many a new roof is needed after a good hail storm.
