Just ran across a rather surprising bit of news . . .

Senate Bill SB-2099 will require us to put on our 2000 1040 fedral tax form all guns that you have or own. It may require fingerprints and a tax of $50 per gun.

This bill was introduced on February 24. It becomes public knowledge 30 days after it is voted into law. This is an amendment to the Internal Revenue Act of 1986. This means the Finance Committee can pass this without the Senate voting on it at all.

The full text of the proposed amendment is on the US Senate homepage:
http://www.senate.gov/
You can find the bill by doing a search by the bill number - SB-2099

Wow, $50 per registered weapon. Bet the administration costs will outweigh revenue by an order of magnitude.

Search results:

The text of SB-2099 is not available yet at this source.

I search the 105th congress, the 106th congress and new bills. No go.

Is there another place to find it?

It's a for real PROPOSAL, applicable only to handguns.

A political move to say "see what I'm doing about the gun problem!" and is unlikely to get off the senate floor.

There are some 200 such plays in congress at any given time. Almost none see the light of day.

If you go to the bottom left of the home page noted above, there is a place for a specific search by bill number. Put in SB-2099 and it comes up.

And you're right KRS, there's a lot of back doors being rattled on a regular basis to slip in gun control measures. Don't know why I keep being surprised when I hear of a new one. Particularly in an election year.
