We went to the local Hurricane Relief place.
We went to see what was really needed, and they do need a lot of formula, and mens, womens and childrens underwear (new of course)
My daughter stayed and volunteered to help sort and pack, I watched the baby, who is a handful these days. I don't know where these women come from but they were TRASHING clothes that did not have new tags on them!
My daughter quit after a few hours, because she said, there are people that really want to help, and bringing used clean clothes was all they could do, and she was told to trash them! She also said the woman in charge said 'I don't know what people are thinking! Bringing in used clothes, its disgraceful!'
I mentioned the underwear, they do need this, and YES that is one of the things that does have to be new, but clothes? jeans and shirts?
From here they are being shipped to TX. Seattle is taking in 1000 people from New Orleans.

I can say the Salvation Army does not throw away clothing. They will mark everything down at 99 cents when they get too much but I never see them throwing away any clothing.

What a slap in the face to all the people who took time to put together the clothing that may be needed, take it or send it down there, just to have it thrown away????
Who knows what they were throwing away there - goodness, at least throw it in to size piles and have someone sell it on Ebay for them.

Colin, I don't think they are even doing that.
Caroline, they had the huge waste management dumpsters, and they were told to toss them there. My daughter called 2 local tv stations (the ones that told us where to go and donate clothing) and one didn't really care, and one might go there and check it out.
Yes it is a slap in the face. I did donate formula, of course they are new and sealed, but I do not see anything wrong with clean used clothing

That's totally uncalled for. What a disgrace. If they ONLY want new items then they should be making that VERY clear to all who are donating used items. Not accepting them and then trashing them.
Nothing at all wrong with good clothes being given to those who have nothing.
I hope the news media does pick up and let people know what they're doing. With so many in need, there's no excuse for that being done.

The ingratitude of some of these refugees:
I was taking to a neighbor of mine. His wife's family is from Mississippi. Before Katina made land fall they called and asked if they could stay with them for a while.
He told then OK. So here comes the wife's son, DIL & 2 grandkids. Following them was the wife's sister & husband (unannounced).
The son & dil fit right in, helping with the household chores, mowing & etc.
The sister sits in front of the TV & wont lift a hand. Only gets up when breakfast, lunch and dinner is on the table.
To top all of this off, yesterday she made the statement, "This is like a vacation I don't have to pay for or lift a hand for anything".
My neighbor Ron, who like me is a calm, sane, rational person hit the roof. Guess who is now looking for shelter.
Now in my attempt to help out, I called a church that was housing 40 or 50 people. I stated I had several boxes of paperback books & would give them if they wanted.
Good, bring them the preacher told me. I walked in with the boxes and the first question I was asked by some of the "residents" was what did I bring to eat.
Told then I didn't bring anything to eat, but thought some might like something to read to pass the time.
"We don't want nuthing to read, we want somethin to eat". I turned to the preacher who was obviously embarrassed and asked (even though I knew the answer) aren't they being fed?
He said they were getting 3 hots and a cot (breakfast, lunch & dinner & a bed).
I left the boxes with him after making the comment that maybe some of them would appreciate the books, but I wasn't waisting anymore of my time looking for them.
I gave my liberal neighbors son a book for his birthday. He went crazy trying to find where to put the batteries.
