for those who offer up to a year of free room and board to Katrina families,do they realise what they are getting into?
Some of these families come from generations of welfare recipients, they have never worked or barely work, they are used to watch Tv all day, squabble among themselves, eat pizza and fried chicken washed down with litre of soda and cool aids.
They may not have a car,but they eat better and have bigger and newer Tv set than their hosts and hostesses.
How do you keep them happy and entertained in your home??

Gee, Maggie, if I thought THAT's what you do here I better take back my offer

Stop, you're a horse's patoot....but I knew that before.

Maybe between you, lindaKKK, and Bear you could work up an approval scale of who 's worthy to be helped and who isn't.

Did you ever stop to think(ya, right) that there are many many Iraqi's who may fit that description and your tax dollars are going into Iraq at a phenomenal rate...Ha Ha!

From Big Ed's website(and one reason neocons don't want to go there):

"""Twenty-four hours after hurricane evacuee Brittney McKenzie arrived with only the clothes on her back, The Ed Schultz Show helped her get enrolled as a 2nd year biology student at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND.

This morning Brittney went to her first class at NDSU.""

I'm glad you brought it up Stopwhining, it's a very good point for discussion.

I predict that we will see reprecussions from this for years to come and it will be interesting to see just how many will work and how many will insist on being taken care of.

It's party time for some of these refugees (sorry Maggie) and they will milk the system as long as they can.

It would be interesting to see some university keeps some sort of stats on how this either changes the 'guests' lives or how it doesn't help them at all.

Maybe being around people who have some ambition and have made something of their lives, might just encourage those 'guests' to change the way they live their own lifes.

As has been mentioned...maybe the children of those 'guests' might see and mirror a better more positive way of viewing what's available to them if they actually do something for themselves. Rather than sitting back and having a defeatist attitude. Might just turn out to be a good thing....the hosts/hostess will provide good mentors for them all.

Of course, they will still be some who are too old....or have grown to like the 'government' nanny taking care of them.....but I'll bet this 'new beginning' will give a lot of other now-homeless visitors some renewed hope for themselves and their future.

At least they'll be given that opportunity. If they actually will take it....remains to be seen.

But yes, stop, I do know what you mean about having even one's own family stay too long. A lot of adjusting to be done on both sides ....the new-mentors and the guests. But maybe in that years time, opportunities will open up for the visitors and they'll be able to care for themselves long before the year is up.

edited to add: And maybe the new mentors and the new guests might draw up mutual agreements about their expectations while living together. A lot of families I know did that as their children were growning up. Writing down some expectations and rules....so all know what is expected of them.
..in order to keep the peace.

Linda what leads you to the conclusion that the poor people who lost their homes in the hurricane need motivation and ambition? On what do you base that thought. Do you know the percentage of the displaced who were jobless when they lost their homes to a flood and the percentage that were on welfare. Tell us about your thinking on this score. Without substantiation, your statements above are bigoted, callous and ignorant.

Oh helen....I just KNOW you have the ability to pull up any of the stats you need.

And I could post them myself all day long and into next week, and it wouldn't change your 'fixed in cement' opinion that they're not.

So...I won't bother. YOU look up the poverty rate, you look up the number of those in NO who exist on government checks. There you'll find what I'm speaking about.

iregardless of ambition, drive or motivation,I think the hosts have not considered the difficulties of having another family living in their home!
Unless you own property and just let them stay in an apt or house for a year and hope they dont trash it ,else it would be like what Roosevelt once said- house guests and garbage, they both smell after 3 days.

stop - I really do understand what you're saying. It won't be easy....but obviously those who are doing so know what they'll be facing.

My own family, and my husbands family shared what life was like for them during the depression years. My Grandparents were farmers and shared had they not been they probably would have starved to death. But they shared what they had with others. They bartered with others for things they couldn't afford to buy....my granddad said they didn't have two nickels to rub together during those times...but everyone shared what they had and many families who lost their homes/apartments just went to live with their relatives. They wanted to survive. They appreciated someone took them and their families in. When my Aunt and Uncle married 73 years ago this month, by the way....it was the middle of the depression too. They knew there wasn't a chance in h ll they could afford a place of their own. So they lived with their family too.

Now my husbands grandparents left Nebraska during the depression, there just was no work there, and moved to CA. They both got jobs, he at a newspaper as a printer and she at the water company. They shared they each made $55.00 a week and survived quite nicely. But others around them were losing their homes and those who 'had' let those families live in their garages. People took care of the less fortunate....those who were going through hard times. And as they shared some of their memories with us....it sure wasn't easy...for anyone. But everyone knew they had to 'make it work' for their own benefit....to survive as best they could.

Now, I admit times and people have certainly changed. And we're not too used to sharing our house/apt/etc with others....family or strangers. But it they want it to work...they'll make it work...for the benefit of all.

Linda, I believe Mingotree cited a student who started her SECOND year at North Dakota State University. Gee, that means she actually got up enough ambition to complete her first year in New Orleans! Imagine that!

funny how Linda uses the words, "defeatist attitude" without any consideration of how she behaves here. from what i have read of her posts, her attitude has been pretty negative towards these displaced people to the point where she focuses more on the negative towards the poor than with optimism. i suppose if you kick someone while they are down hard enough, they probably will just tire of getting back up, huh linda? or perhaps linda doesn't realize that most of the poor in NOLA and the coastal region actually did have jobs, but didn't get paid enough to pull themselves out of poverty. I am sure we can thank Walmart and the rest of the bloodsucking corporations that take advantage of workers while making records profits, or in the neocon frame of mind, that would still be the poors fault.

Oh great, coach....one out of 115,000.....that's a good beginning. Many THOUSANDS need to follow her excellent lead. Get educated - get out of the poverty they've lived in for generations.

Maybe cf/mg/LB can list a couple more out of those thousands that are on governement aid.

Maggie, I love foods from the South. The problem is NEOCON TIGHT AZZES like stop and Linda_K most likely don't know how to eat. They probably think a T.V. Dinner is really living.

If they think the different cultures in the U.S. will go away because they want them to. What fools they really are.

BTW Linda_K you should tune into the Public Radio station near you. P.B.S. here in Pittsburgh are playing GREAT New Orleans music while doing a fund raiser, for the victims of the poor planing by Bush and other government agencies.

Linda_K your boy Karl Rove is now in charge of damage control for this White House and the CON-servative movement in regards to the New Orleans mess. I am sure you will have new NEOCON KEY WORDS for your use soon. I can't wait for you to "BRING THEM ON"

Our county, Montgomery County, Maryland has offered free college education to some storm survivors...along with housing, secure jobs and immediate school placement for children. They will offer aid to 1,000 storm victims.

Linda, your ignorant, bigoted attitude precludes any meaningful discussion with you on this topic.

it always makes me chuckle to see the neocons act as if everyone on welfare is there because they want to be. you should ask my girlfriend who has been unable to work because of the cancerous tumors that invaded her body and her dislocated knee if she would prefer to get public assistance or work. i would guarantee that the rate of success stories of welfare recipients is at least 50 to 1 vs. those who took advantage of the system, yet we continue to see the neocons cry about free handouts to the poor. do you ever see them cry when Bush gives out corporate welfare in the millions, even though the same companies are recording record profits? rarely.

peepa, you continue to embarass yourself with you total lack of knowledge.

Better go read your polls again...and you'll see a very small minority about 11-13% think the President is responsible for the poor treatment those in NO received.

Heck the governor and their own mayor have been arguing since this first started....that started the problem....and it appears their little 'beef' with one another is continuing.

People with functioning brains can clearly see that....you others will just have to deal with it.

Oh and isn't it Kraftdinner that likes TV dinners?

LindaK---Your one track mind is, well, mind-boggling. Are you trying to say that you think the NDSU student is the only person on the Gulf Coast who is attending college? There are students transferring to other Universities all over the country and even to McGill University in Canada---that's how much they want to continue their educations. Your blanket condemnation of a huge group of people and judgmental attitude just warms the heart.

Just warms your heart? Would that be a 'bleeding heart' liberal one?

Everyone understands there are a few exceptions to every subject discussed. But the facts remain....the majority of those left in NO who needed this government assistance, ARE the one's who have been on government assistance for years, some for most of their lives, even more for generations. NO is one of the most poor places in the US. To deny that is to not acknowledge reality.

And I'm not talking about people who need help when faced with a crisis. But rather all those, not JUST in NO, who have chosen that way of life because it's easier to be taken care of..
