Why are we calling these people refugees?
It seems inappropriate in this instance.

Ron--It is definitely inappropriate
refugee
(noun) : one that flees; especially : a person who flees to a foreign country or power to escape danger or persecution
These are American citizens.

I think that people here are more used to the word 'refugee' being refered to peoples from other countries and that is why the word seems inappropriate when used to describe our own disaster victims.
I think that Coincoach's description of the word describes a very real aspect of these people. They did flee and it was because of a dangerous situation. So therefor the word is appropriate.
Hey, I don't like it anymore than anyone else but it does fit.

Well...it's the educated liberal MSM that started referring to them that way. Now some have placed objections to being classified as that.
I don't think it's a big deal....especially in the whole scheme of things to worry about. But Fox News hasn't been referring to them as refugees.

Bush disagrees with you, linda.
President Bush has joined Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and other black leaders in the disapproval of the word “refugee” to describe those displaced by the hurricane. "The people we're talking about are not refugees, they are Americans," he told reporters during a meeting with volunteer groups who are helping Katrina’s victims. Jackson and other black leaders feel the word has a criminal connotation, preferring the term “evacuees” instead.

Linda - Fox was calling them refugees along with everyone else so lets stop the "leberal left wing media" mantra for at least this toipic. It was not until the last couple days that more of their people started to refer to them as evacuees.

Okay....I can agree to not do that.
Sometimes I really don't think they're going to make it through the next three years, mentally intact.

Grow up Linda - NOt only did you once again sing your ridiculous mantra but you were proven wrong in it. Which one really annoys you... pointing out how ridiculous it sounds or just pointing out how incorrect you were.
BTW - mind telling me why you can tell other what to do but they can't return the favor?

fenix - Picture the huge smilie face with it's tongue sticking out ....just for you.
You grab onto a subject and just can't let it go....no matter how trivial. This is TRIVIAL, imo.
I have had Fox News on for the past three days....pretty much solid...and I have not heard anyone of their hosts use that word.
Maybe me writing it that way will please you....then again....maybe not.

A better name for the refugees from the projects is Welfare leeches.
Born of welfare leeches, breeding future welfare leeches.
And they don't give a dam about bettering themselves as long as their food stamps, government rent controlled apts & medical expenses are paid for.
They complain of being treated like animals when they ACT like animals.
I gave my liberal neighbors son a book for his birthday. He went crazy trying to find where to put the batteries.
