Taking the plunge and finally getting out of AOL in the next few days. Can't take it any longer. SBC DSL was hubby's choice. Hope we're doing the right thing. Anyway, what I want to know is - should I be expecting any big problems when the email address gets changed? I mean with eBay, vendio or paypal? Thanks for any insight.

You shouldn't have a problem, as long as you promptly contact them and give them your new email address. Make sure your work an d your friends all have it, too.

When I changed over, AOL offered my their service for a buck a month. I used it for a while till everyone knew my new address. Then got rid of it. They weren’t worth the buck a month.
It was the best move I ever made, just getting away from AOL.

We have SBC Yahoo DSL and it's been fine. The best thing I ever did as far as the computer goes is to get rid of AOL. It was difficult at first. They lure you in and like a cult, it's hard to break free. But, once you do you won't be sorry!!

Nothing, as long as you need someone to tell you what to look at on the internet, and as long as you don't ever, ever, EVER want to quit. When you do, you'll find out how many hidden files they've stashed all over your machine.
Oh, and you seem to have answered your own question:
It works,it just has too much junk content most people dont need.
AOL. America's favorite way to hide from the internet.

Well profes, not everybody wants to use the internet to sell, or research academia. (Which btw, I noticed google and the rest of the internet more than ever now, is so geared toward sales, its kind of disappointing. It's like you have to get through one big blob of an advertising blitz before you get to what you really want.)
AOL has alot of good content for entertainment you cant get outside their intranet. Some people like the games the have, and there are other things exclusive to them. I like to watch the Sessions at AOL, which is different music groups recording live clips.

Google is inspired by what will make them the most money and that of course is advertising...all about keywords and links. With that money, they are able to offer free software which drives Bill Gates crazy.

I am not crazy about AOL and it is annoying the way they keep adding files on my PC,for all I know, they could be grabbing data from my pc.
Anyway,I am too burnt out to move to another ISP,so I just put up with it.
By the way,I paid 55 dollars per month, how much are you guys paying??

I'm running with Verizon DSL, $29.00 a month, It comes with MSN (no charge). I’ve been with them for a couple years, before that I had satellite with AOL. I've had AOL off my system for quite awhile and still; find embedded files, stuck in the damnest places.
When I quit AOL they still took payment out of the checking account I'd set up for the computer. Not once but 3 or four times. I could do anything with the bank and finally got the money back but it was a pain.
AOL was like the MA-BELL of old and thought they could do anything. If you left them, you were punished. That's over now and AOL is about to go under or be peddled off to someone that wants there data base.

Helen, I dont begrudge Google for wanting to make money. But as a search engine, it'd be nice if you typed in the word foot or something and not have to see 200 hits about 'buying something related to foot' before one is presented that tells how, where, why, what a foot is about is found.
But their free email program is great! Very good to have for ebay. I am just about to switch everything over to it. (You can get it now with just a cell phone number.) So I guess it is out of beta testing and you dont need an invitation anymore.
Colin, that happened to someone I know too, with AOL cancelation and they kept charging.
And they probably do put more junk on your computer but so does everybody else. I still have files from norton I cant get rid of even though I replaced that software with a different program a long time ago.

My SBC Yahoo DSL is costing us $19.99 per month for the first year and we can keep re-upping annually for that same price. Can't beat that no matter how hard you try!
Colin
AOL did the same thing to me. I finally had to get threatening with them. I hung the phone up on them when they tried desperately to get me to change my mind about switching. Even after I switched, they took money. Took forever to get it back from them.

Precisely why they have been able to hang on to the huge market segment they've had until recently. Watching them go broke will be really entertaining. I wonder why the don't do one of their stupid AOL Polls that goes like this:
"Would you, if you could, end your AOL membership?"
yes, in a New York minute
no, I'm into being overcharged and underserved.
Out here in the boonies, our only high speed option is a wireless ISP. I pay 40 dollars a month. I have 1024mb download and 512mb upload speeds. No caps on downloads, no extra charges for our 5 computer LAN, and 50megabyte storage on their server for file transfer, picture hosting (my auction pictures never "disappear" or a personal web page. It's a pretty sweet deal, especially considering they've got us bumpkins over a barrel and could probably get away with charging a lot more.
