I can't afford an iPod. Bummer.
What other good (but cheaper) options are out there? I do't need any special formats, just plain generic MP3 files are what I have.
I actually don't even care so much about quality of sound if it has decent storage (I'm into audiobooks, not so much music).
Opinions?

The iPod is getting cheaper. Isn't an MP3 player about the same $ as iPod?
Sony has some good ones. At sony.com was looking at them for a Christmas present.
And whats up with the cell phone with music? I'd think that would wear the battery down quicker than using your cell phone as a phone!
I have a cell with camera. Don't use it, because the company wants more $ a month for PICTURE SERVICE, and will only give you the software if you sign a contract! No way!

Look into the Zen by Creative. Many more features than the Ipod and available with many different memory levels. I would not trade mine for an Ipod if they gave 10 for 1.

Classic - Everything transfers through a USB cable. I don't have to transfer to my computer hard drive first then to the Zen though . I go straight from A to B very easily. I can transfer an entire CD in less than a minute and never have the extra space to clear up on my PC. Also, It has a rechargeable REMOVABLE battery so I have an extra one pre-charged to continue on when mine runs out. I can also record from the FM radio that is on it at the drop of a riff

thanks cross-that was a BIG help.I have been looking at Ipods for sometime now,but from what I understand you can only download them from the computer thru Itunes . I have lots of cds I want to transfer, but my cd recorder is in another room.If I had to download them on the computer first,it would be a big pain to have to bring my cd recorder into my computer room everytime I wanted to put songs on it.Thanks again.

Classic - are you saying that your computer does not have a CD-rom? You use that to rip your Cd's - you don't need the recorder.

The thing like about ripping files to the computer is that I can borrow a CD from a friend, or rip hundreds of CD I have then store the files on DVds. Since I sometimes get in modes where I want to hear different types of music I can easily switch out the songs rather than have to find the CD or CDs in question, especially good when it is from something a friend had. iTunes keeps all of the files organized even if they are no longer on the hard drive. I can bring up the song or album in question, see what storage disk it's on and I am good to go.

Fenix-You're right about having to look up songs. That is the feature I love best about the Zen. It stores them all and I can retrieve them by song name, genre, album,or artist. Very easy to find anything you want. Also the play list feature lets me set up any combination of songs and edit them easily. For me, if it isn't easy then I am technically challenged. I can also store anything to my hard drive, but mostly I just prefer to go straight to the Zen. I have an extensive collection of music and prefer not to buy just single downloads.
