Thanks Doc,
It is a dilemma to decide how best to proceed with space exploration.
BTW I was one of the few.

There should be a ban on cutbacks for materials. If you can't afford the best, then the shuttles shouldn't launch.
My only hope is that these brave astronauts didn't suffer. Bless all of them for their sacrifice.

The tragedy that always bothered me the most was the APOLLO I disaster, which claimed THREE, including bad luck poster-boy Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom...
A cabin environment of 100% PRESSURIZED OXYGEN -- how unbelieveably STUPID!
Was totally preventable and mind-bogglingly moronic -- truly borders on the criminally negligant...

And of course the latest tragedy, Katrina is the greatest natural disaster in our nations history.

We'll get past Katrina. It's just a matter of rebuilding.
The decline and failure of the space program may be a far more significant loss in the long term. It would only take one big asteroid and there wouldn't be anyone left to remember Katrina.
We're still dealing with the "all our eggs in one basket" as long as we're all on the same planet.
Expansion and colonization is NOT out of our reach.

wow, I remember Challenger. It was terribly sad
And with that, I still hope we go one with travel in space. I really hope they continue.

Wrong, the real problem was the hatch door that opened inward.
And of course the latest tragedy, Katrina is the greatest natural disaster in our nations history.
Again wrong, Kartina was mostly PROPERTY DAMAGE.
The GREATEST NATURAL DISASTER IN OUR HISTORY was the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 in which over 6000 men, women & children died.
Not counting the many that died during the subsequent cleaning up.

Wrong again. The greatest national tragedy is reality TV. Millions lost.

The only mammal known to routinely crap in it's own nest thinks it deserves another nest to crap in. That's human logic for you.

Excuse me, but I haven't crapped in my bed in weeks! Well days maybe. Oh. You meant humanity...
But unless somebody proves to me that there is someone else out there, I say we're the best there is and should work under that assumption. If we are the only life in the universe, then were are in charge, for better or worse. If we're not the only ones in the universe, then it sucks to be them. There goes the neighborhood!

nerfball: Hamsters only crap in their nests because they're in cages and have to crap somewhere. Maybe we feel like we're in a cage, and that's why we crap in our nest and, having soiled it beyond cleaning, want to get a new one. We know more about space at this moment than we know about the oceans that surround us. What's wrong with that picture?

Bear there was a program on that on either the History Channel or the NGC 4 or 5 months ago.
Back then they got there storm warnings from all places,Cuba.I think this was the first hurricane Galveston ever had,so they didnt take it too seriously.Dan Rather went down in the mid-80's to cover a hurricane and after the hurricane passed, the thing that gave him the creeps was all the snakes down there.

Classic. My grandfather was involved in the cleanup of Galveston Island in Sept 1900. He was one of those who died because of his involvement. Dying of tetanus when my father was only 2 years old.
What is really impressive about the houses that survived the1900 storm all had massive foundations and are still standing today.
Dan Rather was a local TV reporter in Houston in 1963 when Hurricane Carla came along. Thats how he came to fame. Another Houston TX reporter by the name of Chris Chandler also covered Carla live from Galveston. He survived but faded into history.
I worked for Houston Lighting & power in the early 70's with a bunch of guys that also rode out Carla from the Hotel Galvez.

Maggie, it was Alicia. September of 83. I was living in the Channelview area at the time & was without power for a week. The winds were strong enough to move several moble homes off their blocks even thought they were tied down.

Maggie,Traders Village is still there and larger & busier than ever. Trying to get a booth is almost impossible.
That area has changed so much in the past few years you wouldn't recognize it. Hwy 290 is 6 lanes wide and so is Hwy 6 / FM 1960. So much traffic that I'm thankful I live out in the country.
