yes,gold price is rising.
I think the real estate market is going to drag us all down, where I am,we cannot give our houses away, most of my neighbors lost money selling their houses.

I see a lot of that where I live. I also see too many foreclosure auctions. The woman across the street has had her home on the market for over a year. It's a completely remodeled Victorian. It's stunning. You can't beat it for $89,000. Still, no one is buying.
My mother lives in a middle class neighborhood and they can't give away their homes either. My parents were going to move to Florida, but have given up on trying to sell their home.

Those examples are by no means representative of the whole country. Not a weekend goes by I don't have some city boy in a Lexus come all the way to the end of my road asking what I'll take for the place. I'm tempted to put a sign out on the main road that reads "No Property For Sale on this Road, go home where you belong."

some areas are still doing well,Wall Street bonus is out,so people are buying condos in Manhattan so they can walk to work.
One problem in our area is that our builder just broke ground to build another 1000 houses.

There is a growing number of people who are not actually defined as poor but who are "dancing on the titanic" while those at the top of the economic ladder are earning more. These working poor cannot be accused of being lazy or apathetic because they are working hard at jobs. They can't afford the escalating cost of housing, escalating cost of health care and escalating cost of utilities and food. A glimpse into that kind of poverty which is prevalent in most U.S. cities was exposed when the hurricane hit New Orleans.

It is not just New Orleans, good jobs are scarce in that city, but Houston has many low paying jobs as well.
We have an indoor flea market where you can rent a booth from 100 /a month and up,it is open just 3 days a week, most are hispanic serving hispanic community, the ones which are doing well are like hair salon and selling used computer/electronic goods at the lowest price possible.
I have seen people who doze off at their table selling keychains, undies etc, look like they just get off from work and try to make a few bucks manning a booth.

Better look again, NO is paying top wages for all resturaunt jobs because they can't get the people.
NO is ripe for good paying jobs right now. It will be those waiting for ye olde government handout that will lose out.
"Working poor" now there is an oxymoron.
Opportunities are not dead in the US, just people's motivation.
Oh and precious metals have always been a good hedge against inflation, but won't be stocks, never have, never will.

They are trucking hispanic workers into New Orleans for cleanup and reconstruction work while the New Orleans welfare folks wonder what happens to their fate in out of state hotels/apts/motels??
Wage may be high, but housing is higher, and very hard to find housing in that city.

New Orleans Restaurants Starved for Help By MARY FOSTER, Associated Press Writer
Tue Jan 24, 1:51 PM ET
NEW ORLEANS - Ralph Brennan can get the oysters, crawfish and other seafood he needs for The Redfish Grill and his other French Quarter restaurants. What he can't find are enough busboys, waiters, dishwashers and other kitchen help.
Restaurateurs in this storm-battered city known the world over for its zesty food have raised wages, lined up trailers for workers, even put them up in their own homes.
This is an excerpt from the entire article, jobs are there for those wanting one.
But I hear Houston has a better gang atmosphere so most are staying there

You can't blame the government for that one. Not Republican or Democrats.
It was Alan Greenspan keeping interest rates way too low for too long and real estate agents stating buy now and make a fortune, causing the housing market values to raise at a rate much higher than inflation. Now that they seem to be topping out, people are complaining that their homes are decreasing in value.
All I can say is DUH.

I blame China and Japan for buying all that US debt. They should have instead followed the Saudis lead and bought more of the USA. Between them they'd own at least 25% of the USA (only the good parts mind you), then they could evict former tenants into neighbouring unpopular parts. It'd solve a lot of problems and keep the US economy going so it could keep importing goods from Japan, China and oil from Saudis.
BTW the reason gold is so high in dollar terms is that the US dollar has lost so much value. In other "hard" currencies gold hasn't risen anywhere near as much.
