Just having a few reflective moments and thinking about how a chance event, find or meeting can have a profound effect and change our lives and lifestyles.
I'm not referring to our romances and partners, (that's a whole new thread by itself) but to our pastimes and liesure or even career.
To draw a few examples I am a golf NUT!!! It all came about after I bought a set of golf clubs at an auction one night just because they were going cheap and I could see a nice profit in them. I had never played nor ever considered playing. The very next day an old friend came to visit, saw the clubs and said to me that he didn't know I played golf.
I didn't, but he suggested that we go down to the local course and have a hit. I wasn't really enthused but went along with the idea anyway.
That was it! The game grabbed me with a pleasure I couldn't believe.
Now I play at least twice a week. I travel all over to play. It has become a lifestyle that I enjoy immensely. It was never planned, it just happened.
I have a feeling that another poster (Hi bunnicula) may have by some strange chance, found a passion in scuba diving, and this too will be become a major influence to their lifestyle.
How about you? What single event suddenly opened unexpected doors for you? What is your passion or obsession?

bitsnbobs, my 8 year old is a golf nut too... my mother lives in a country club estates home and he wandered over the fence and onto the golf club when he was 3. We looked out the window and saw him wayyyyy out on the green and when we finally retrieved him all he could say was "I want golf! I want golf!" lol Now he takes lessons and wants to be a golf pro... if you ever make it from your island to ours, maybe you guys can go hit a few!

My latest "passion," scuba diving, came about like that. Our Summer Reading Club's theme this year was "Dive Into Reading" and I contacted a dive shop near the library to ask if they'd loan some equipment to us for a display for the kids. When I went to pick the stuff up, I said to the owner "You know, I've often thought over the years that it would be fun to dive." He said "Why don't you?" Thoughtfully I answered "Yeah, why don't I?" And I signed up for lessons on the spot!

When I was 37 I accidently discovered the world of creating porcelain and ceramic art. Until then, I didn't realize that I had an artistic bone in my body. It became such an obsession that even though I can't physically do as much as I used to do - I still have a garage full of ceramic/porcelain molds - just in case I ever get my strength back. I love creating the finished piece - but the act of pouring the slip into the molds and seeing the clay piece form has always been my favorite part of the process.
For this piece, I created the gloved hand and did the finished carving, painting, glazing, etc. My husband did the toughest part - he started with a silk rose - took it apart - worked each piece until it was completely permeated with slip - then rebuilt the rose. I finished carving it - then painted and glazed and fired it in the oven. (This is the only "cooking" I really enjoy. We did this one together for our 19th anniversary gift to each other. One of my favorite pieces ever.

mybiddness, that is GORGEOUS!!! Do you make those for auction too? If so, slap a link on here! I LOVE that! I would love to have something like that with maybe a deep pink hibiscus in a shell.

Hi Kiheicat Thanks for the compliment. I haven't put one up for auction yet - can't decide if it would get enough bids to put the time into it.
If you have a picture of the flower you have in mind - email a pic of it to me and I can let you know if I can do it. I can use any silk flower - like you'd find at an arts & crafts store. Just have to be sure that it doesn't have any metal in it - that tends to explode in the kiln. I probably have a shell mold that will work - or you can always attach it to a real shell.
My auctionwatch email is activated now - so, if you'd like just send the pic there.

Really pretty stuff.
I developed my love of pottery when I was stationed at Fort Sill OK. There was
this Sergeant that used to follow me around the base and try to get me in his car.
He happened to do it one day when I was out jogging and I ran into this craft hobby
place they had on base to hide.
While I was in there one of the staff told me I might as well take a class to pass the
time until he went away. (As a private I followed just about every order except "get
in my car"
The only other one in the class was a female captain who upon hearing my story
went outside and chewed the sergeant a new orifice.
I feel in love with pottery that day and have been doing it ever since.( I also learned
a lot about personal power and have not run scared since that day)
I have a wheel and kiln in the garage. Like most potters I dream of having a studio
some day.Since my paintings sell so much better than my pottery on ebay I haven't
done
much pottery this year. Which is odd because I am ten times better at pottery than
painting.

Tegan How terrific to find another person who loves playing in the mud. I haven't tried throwing pottery yet. I'd love to though and I'll bet it's just as addictive. I'm not any good at paintings - haven't really tried that. I do love to dye lace and appliques - get some very unique looks with my techniques. Also, have a real knack for painting eyes on figurines. Nothing more satisfying than bringing one "to life" with soulful eyes. Maybe when I'm retired I'll have the time to learn pottery. My garage is so full of eBay stuff & porcelain/ pottery odds & ends now I'd have to put a throwing wheel on the roof. Not enough room - too many passions!

Well we do have a few things in common. I love to do tie dye and batik. (another passion I have no room or time for since ebay)
Pottery is still my first love though.
I have tried using molds but I can't get the stupid stuff out when I do.
Do you mix your own glazes?

If you're having trouble getting the slip out you're probably letting it sit in the mold for too long. You might try adding a cup of water to the slip before you pour it in the mold. I'll warn you though - once you get it going it is sooooo addictive.
I've never tried mixing my own glazes. It is fun though to take crystals from different crystal glazes and mix them together with another glaze - You'll either end up with a beautifully fascinating piece - or a piece that's just good for target practice. I love that surprise of opening up the kiln to see what results.

Cool, mybiddness, thanks! When I come up for air this week, I'll paw through and see if I can find a picture...I actually just planted a row of hibiscus bushes as a lawn border and they have some beautiful flowers blooming.
And, yes, I'd bet you would get bids on something like that... why not go browsing through items like that on eBay and see what they're fetching?

My hobby/passion?...Goin out an killin stuff!!!!
Seriously, when I was younger I used to hunt a LOT...mostly upland birds and deer. I LOVE to fish, but don't get the chance much anymore...nice part about fishing, if you don't catch fish, you can ALWAYS catch a buzz!
I have done the sky-diving thing, the white-water thing, but I think the thing that still gives me the most relaxasion/pleasure, is goin to the local "Sporting Clays" range and blastin off about 3 boxes of .12 guage 6 shot at harmless pieces of ceramics!!!

Hey Ubie - I've got tons of pieces of ceramics - kiln misfires, etc. You'd have a blast at my house!
Kiehlcat - Maybe we can make a trade for some of your great clothes you have listed. I was just browsing them again last night thinkin I really need a new wardrobe. Jeans and t's are getting old - Can't wait to see what you come up with. These are usually made with real silk flowers as the base - but, I do have a beautiful orchid mold that is just as delicate as these are - if I can find it.
