Afghan Clerics Demand Death for Convert

By AMIR SHAH

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — International pressure grew Friday on Afghanistan to free a man on trial for converting from Islam to Christianity, as clerics in Kabul called for his execution.

Australia's Prime Minister John Howard on Friday joined the chorus of Western leaders to express concern over the case of Abdul Rahman and said he would protest personally to Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

"This is appalling. When I saw the report about this I felt sick literally," Howard told an Australian radio network. "The idea that a person could be punished because of their religious belief and the idea they might be executed is just beyond belief."

Rahman, a 41-year-old former medical aid worker, faces the death penalty under Afghanistan's Islamic laws for becoming a Christian.

Senior clerics in the Afghan capital have voiced strong support for the prosecution and have warned they would incite people to execute Rahman if he is freed and refuses to revert to Islam.

That message was reiterated at Friday prayers.

DUMBO'S STYLE OF DEMOCRACY,ISLAMIC LAWS.

5 YEARS LATER SILL NO BIN LADEN.

WHAT A MESS AMERICA IS IN BECAUSE OF DUMBO AND HIS GANG OF CON-SERVATIVE CROOKS. BY SUMMER SEVERAL MORE OF BUSH'S CROOKS WILL BE INDICTED ON MONEY CHARGES.

Peepa - can you please explain to me what Bush has to do with Islamic law? I don't get it... do you believe that he should get the hell out of all foreign nations and take care of things at home or do you believe that he should be taking over all nations and dictate their laws to them.

And could you please actually address the point, and possibly do it without erroneously calling me a conservative.

We have dumbassed laws on our books and gung-ho prosecutors that by-pass common sense and try to enforce them to make names for themselves too.

Hey,
You both have to admit DUMBO is always talking, talking and talking about all the wonderful things his administration has done in Afghanistan and Iraq.

We lost troops and still are loosing troops in Afghanistan along with a bunch of money we can't afford. What did our troops sacrifice and money bring the World?

DUMBO'S style of democracy a split up country under "ISLAMIC LAWS".

Now the Taliban seems to be reforming and STILL AFTER 5 YEARS UNDER DUMBO'S planning NO BIN LADEN.

DUMBO also brought us a country that really doesn't have much of a government of any kind outside KABUL. No change there.

Afghanistan still is the biggest producer of poppies for Heroin in the World. No change there.

DUMBO talks big day after day about Afghanistan and Iraq. Now if Iraq doesn't go into full blown Civil war they will also wind up with DUMBO'S style of democracy. A country under "ISLAMIC LAWS".

I for one am SICK AND TIRED of listening to DUMBO TALK ABOUT HIS ASSESSMENT OF DEMOCRACY AND THE GOOD HE HAS DONE IN BOTH AFGHANISTAN AND IRAQ. DUMBO'S ASSESSMENT OF DEMOCRACY IN ANY WAR OR COUNTRY HE IS INVOLVED IN,INCLUDING OUR OWN COUNTRY DOESN'T FLY.

Just remember 5 years later and still no Bin Laden.

Well - that was a hell of a rant, but you still managed to not answer the question.

Do you want Bush taking over countries and dictating their laws to them or

Do you want Bush to butt out and take care of issues at home.

You cannot blame him for the existance of a previously unenforced a law that is older than you are unless you believe that he should be taking over the nation and installing a government of his own.

You are right I do not have any respect for DUMBO BUSH. I AM ALSO BIG TIME SICK OF WATCHING STAGED SPEECHES FROM HIM ON ALMOST A DAILY BASIS. STAGED SPEECHES WHERE DUMBO OFTEN BRAGS ABOUT AFGHANISTAN AS SOME KIND OF A VICTORY FOR HIM AND AMERICA.

Victory? After 5 long years where is Bin Laden.

Dumbo gets tens of thousands of innocent people killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. KILLINGS WE ARE STILL COUNTING EVERYDAY!!!

Domestically BUSH is raping Middle Class American,he has run America into TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF DEBT. Bush has divided America more than anytime since our Civil War. Now you guys tell me what's to RESPECT?

I DID ANSWER YOUR QUESTION MY HEADING SAID (DUMBO'S STYLE OF DEMOCRACY) I gave several reasons why just because DUMBO says there is DEMOCRACY in Afghanistan IT JUST AIN'T SO.

I WILL SAY IT AGAIN JUST IN CASE YOU GUYS DON'T GET IT.

DUMBO BRAGS ABOUT BRINGING A DEMOCRACY TO AFGHANISTAN. Can you in good faith call Afghanistan a Democracy like DUMBO SAYS?

IF YOU GUYS AGREE WITH BUSH THAT AFGHANISTAN IS A DEMOCRACY YOUR AS DUMB AND BLIND AS YOUR FAILED LEADER IS.

After 5 long years where is Bin Laden?

Anyone who thinks for one moment that the Islamic countries will ever embrace our style of democracy, needs to go back to their history books. These countries are seeped in hundreds of years of tradition and religious law. Not Bush, not Rice, not Chaney, not anyone is going to change that. Freedom of Religion is an integral part of being a democracy and that will never happen (not in our lifetimes, anyway) in heavily Islamic countries. In many ways, these people don't live in the 21st century. They may never catch up with the rest of the world. I suspect most like it that way. They can be brutal and cruel and are ruled by a religion that is so easily twisted and stretched that it becomes evil in the eye of many, when in reality it is not.

Bush can walk around with his chest out boasting that he's bringing democracy to the Middle East, but he's only kidding himself. Most Americans don't buy it anymore. If anyone at all is bringing democracy to the Middle East, it is our soldiers serving over there not Bush or anyone else in the administration who are not putting their lives on the line everyday.

Well, that's my rant for the week.

cblev65252,
I don't call your words a rant. I call your words the truth.

Its DUMBO'S BASE that RANT AND NIT PICK WORDS. That's all they have left.

Sometimes I start to drop my guard and start feeling bad for them. After all the guy they supported is such a HUGH FAILURE.

THEN I QUICKLY REMEMBER ALL THE HARM BUSH AND HIS CON-SERVATIVE LAWMAKERS HAVE DONE TO AMERICA.

Battle at Afghan Military Base Kills 14

By RAHIM FAIEZ

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) — Militants attacked a coalition forces base in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, sparking a battle that killed two soldiers — an American and a Canadian — and at least 12 rebels, officials said.

The battle in Helmand province's Sangin district also wounded three Canadian soldiers, Canadian Brig. Gen. David Fraser told reporters at a base in southern Kandahar city. A U.S. military statement said an American soldier was also hurt.

Helmand is a hotbed of insurgency and center of the booming trade in illegal drugs and has been the scene of some of the deadliest fighting in recent months.

The attack followed separate roadside bombings in the region Tuesday that killed six Afghan soldiers and four private security workers, respectively. Officials blamed both bombings on Taliban rebels. Suspected Taliban rebels also attacked a police checkpoint in Kandahar city late Tuesday, killing two officers and wounding four, police said.

AND DUMBO BUSH BRAGS ABOUT HIS STYLE OF DEMOCRACY IN AFGHANISTAN

Italy Welcomes Man Who Fled Afghanistan
Wednesday, March 29, 2006 12:10 PM EST
The Associated Press
By MARIA SANMINIATELLI

ROME (AP) — Italy granted asylum Wednesday to an Afghan who faced the death penalty for converting from Islam to Christianity, and Premier Silvio Berlusconi said the man was in the care of the Interior Ministry after arriving in Italy earlier in the day.

Conversion is a crime under Afghanistan's Islamic law. Rahman, 41, was arrested last month after police discovered him with a Bible. He was brought to trial last week for converting 16 years ago while working as a medical aid worker for an international Christian group helping Afghan refugees in Pakistan.

Muslim clerics in Afghanistan condemned Rahman's release, saying it was a "betrayal of Islam," and threatened to incite violent protests.

Some 500 Muslim leaders, students and others gathered Wednesday in a mosque in southern Qalat town and criticized the government for releasing Rahman, said Abdulrahman Jan, the top cleric in Zabul province.

He said the government should either force Rahman to convert back to Islam or kill him.
