Nine More U.S. Soldiers Killed in Iraq
Monday, April 3, 2006 7:27 PM EDT
The Associated Press
By VANESSA ARRINGTON

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) — Nine more American troops died in Iraq, the U.S. military reported Monday, five of them in a vehicle accident in a remote, rain-soaked western area. Their deaths brought the number of service members killed so far this month to 13 — nearly half the number who died in all of March.

Three more Americans — two Marines and a sailor — were missing in the Sunday accident in which a truck overturned near Asad air base, a U.S. statement said. All the dead were Marines, the statement added.

It gave no reason for the accident except that it was not a result of hostile fire. Heavy rains fell over the area during the weekend.

Also Sunday, three Marines and a sailor were killed by "hostile fire" in Anbar province, which includes the Asad base, the military said. No further details, including the precise location, were released.

It was the first time that four American troops had been killed in a single attack since Feb. 22, when four soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division died in a bombing in northern Iraq.

HEY DUMBO ADMIT YOUR FAILURE AND BE A REAL (LEADER/MAN) START PULLING OUR TROOPS OUT OF IRAQ NOW.

When its your time, it doesnt matter if you're in Iraq or the USofA.

Severe Storms Kill 27 in South, Midwest

NEWBERN, Tenn.

Tornadoes shredded homes to their foundations, hail tore holes in the rooftops and high winds toppled even freight cars as a line of violent storms cut zigzagging paths of destruction that killed at least 27 people across the nation's midsection.

The worst damage from Sunday night's storms occurred along a 25-mile swath of rural western Tennessee, where 23 of the deaths occurred and state troopers using dogs searched for more victims amid the rubble of brick buildings and toppled trailers.

"Most of the houses, you can't count. They're just gone," said Roy Childress, who was part of a church relief crew that was delivering food and water to survivors Monday.

The dead included an infant and the grandparents who had been babysitting him. A young couple and their two sons, ages 5 and 3, were also killed, their bodies found 800 yards from their house.

"It basically took my life away. I don't really care if I see daylight tomorrow," said Larry Taylor, the boys' grandfather and the only funeral director in rural Bradford. He was planning to bury the family in two separate caskets, with each child alongside one of his parents.

"I'd give everything I had for that not to have happened,' he said through tears. "Those little boys were my life."

Severe storms also struck parts of Iowa, Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. Strong winds were blamed for at least three deaths in Missouri. A clothing store collapsed in southern Illinois, killing one man.

Cant wait to see how the left turns this into a global warming issue.

Car Bomb in Baghdad Kills at Least 10
By ROBERT H. REID, AP

BAGHDAD, Iraq (April 4) - A car bomb exploded Tuesday in a mostly Shiite area of eastern Baghdad, killing at least 10 people as Iraq's political process stalled over demands to replace the embattled prime minister.

You can't handle the truth
Posted: April 4, 2006
1:00 a.m. Eastern

As I watch the news coming out of Baghdad, I am constantly confronted with what seems to be an endless stream of violence and bad news as more innocent citizens are senselessly losing their lives to the terrorists.

As I watch, I think to myself, "What would the average Iraqi think if he or she could see the news coming from our major cities like we see his or hers?"

They would see a crazed gunman clutching a shotgun and a pistol, with bandoleers strapped across his chest carrying extra ammo, ruthlessly shooting seven innocent victims at a party in Seattle. Maybe they would have heard about the wife and mother who shot her husband to death in cold blood and then fled in the family car with children in tow. Or the story of an innocent young college student's body being found after she was brutally raped, murdered and dumped like a bag of garbage. How about the mentally-ill mother drowning her five children or the drive-by shooting in downtown Phoenix that left two dead, including an innocent child?

In 2004 alone, there were 16,137 murders in America – not counting the attempted murders or conspiracies to commit murder. Would the thoughts of the Iraqis be the same as ours?

The nature of news is always to report the worst of the human condition and not the best. Occasionally a good news story will emerge, but not often. The adage of "If it bleeds, it leads" is really the nexus behind the network news. The reason? Because it sells.

Very few people if any watch the news to find out the good that is occurring in their world. They want to know the bad. More people want to watch a good car chase vs. watching how your local mailman won employee of the month. One of the largest media events of last century was the slow speed white Bronco car chase of who? You know. You were watching, just like I was.

With all the recent criticism of the media's reporting in Iraq (mine included) I had to ask myself a serious question: Is the criticism fair or not? I have to suggest the criticism may be a bit unfair given the fact the news folks are required to report the bad. The car wreck. The murder. The rape. The high gasoline prices. These stories are what we want – more than we'd care to admit.

We want to be informed with the issues that affect us and the world in which we live. So it should come as no surprise to us that what we are seeing out of Iraq is what is to be expected. I really wonder what would happen to ratings if all you saw every night were the good and not the bad. Equally important, would we really be informed as to what was really occurring if we did? Probably no more so than we do given all the bad we see.

The news is not supposed to document the current state of the human experience with all its nuances. It is to report the events without comment or editorial and on that account the media fails. They should report the story – not their interpretation of the story – and that is hard to do. We all have a bias. We just don't want to admit it.

The fact is, the news could and should be more balanced. For that to occur, however, the media would need a net end-user. Being the free-market thinker I am, if there isn't a market for any product, the product changes or it dies. There must be a huge market for the gore you see every night or it would change.

So tonight, when you watch your evening news and see all the violence and devastation in Iraq, ask yourself: "What does the rest of the world think about America as they watch our news?" Do they see the streets of America filled with roaming gangs of thugs committing murder in South Central Los Angeles? Do they watch good, solid, innocent folks being hurt by ruthless killers? Does a shudder ring through their bodies as they hear about the pedophilia that is polluting our land, while judges offer a slap on the wrist instead of meaningful punishment?

Take the stories you watch tonight and swap the names of the countries. You will find a very interesting phenomenon – news is universally negative. It is the nature of the beast, and really looks about the same everywhere the "news" is being made.

I can only imagine what went through the minds of the world's citizens during World War II when, day after day, the "news" recounted the dead bodies and the Nazi atrocities that were occurring. I would think the world felt much like we feel today. That there was no end in sight and that the killing would continue and the war would last forever. A thousand this day and a thousand that day – and it got worse and worse. But then, the tide started to turn and the victories started shining through the gray clouds of war. Soon the headlines started heralding the 'Victory is at Hand' and, soon after, the killing stopped.

My only hope is the modern media embraces that day, and doesn't allow the voice of victory to be silenced.

Iraq Files Genocide Charges Against Saddam

Iraqi authorities charged Saddam Hussein with genocide Tuesday, accusing him of trying to exterminate the Kurds in a 1980s campaign that killed an estimated 100,000 _ the first move to prosecute him for the major human rights violations which the U.S. cited to help justify its invasion.

Oh, are we in a race with Saddam? If so, I'm sure that we will exceed his total if we haven't already done so.

So this your way of supporting the troops Helen? Blaming ALL the Iraqi deaths on American troops? Figures.

Freedom isn't free of casualties.

How many innocent citizens died as a result of German bombing during WWII. How many British, Frenchmen, Danes, Poles and other nationalties.

Are you willing to blame those deaths on the US too?

The current wave of terrorism striking Iraq is aimed against Iraqi citizens, police & troops because they have found striking out against American soldiers has become less successful and because the Iraqi's ARE taking on MORE responsibility and becoming more effective.

You don't think the Iraqi's are better off? I do and so do they.

------

From an Iraqi citizen:

The third anniversary...sacrifice, fear and hope.
It has been three years since 'Operation Iraqi Freedom' began and for three years we debated whether the decision was right or wrong and until this moment we have different feelings and opinions about where this operation brought us and where its aftermaths are going to lead us.

This disputed operation no doubt had-and will continue to have-major effects on the future of the region and the rest of the world and it's not limited to the boundaries of Iraq; a fact that makes rational debate legitimate by all standards.

To me, each anniversary brings emotions, thoughts and expectations; some are personal and others are for the future of my country and people. Today I relive those historic moments and remember the way my mind accepted and welcomed those moments like all, or say most Iraqis did as we were praying to see Saddam overthrown without even bothering to think of the consequences or results…all we wanted was to see Saddam out of power, period.

Maybe people still remember how Iraqis first reacted to the change; they directed their rage against anything that reminded them of the regime they hated, burning and looting anything that represented Saddam and his regime. The rich and the poor both stormed those buildings because those angry crowds felt those buildings were Saddam's property and few of us realized at that time that that was wrong yet the emotions driving it were understandable.

The smoke faded away and we woke up to see all the chains gone and instead of the God-president and his iron grip over our destinies, we found ourselves without a guide, without any guidance but our long buried primitive nature, the long repressed nature of loving freedom and practicing it.

The change began then, at that moment where reason mixed with sentiments; were we free…or, were we lost?

Actually it was a lot of both and there was also a sense of great relief that the terrifying warnings from hundreds of thousands of deaths, famine and mass refugees were not true at that point, on the contrary the military operation itself was clean and successful by all standards and didn't cause any serious harm to the civilian population, the infrastructure, or the marching troops.

Saddam was gone and suddenly Iraqis and Americans found themselves face to face in a place that felt new to both of them. They knew almost nothing about each other as the prison Saddam built around us left the world with little knowledge about Iraqis except for the whispers of Iraqis who fled the horrors of the tyrant.
On the other hand, all that Iraqis knew about America was that it's the merciless enemy of Muslims and Arabs, the invader coming for oil, the all-time supporter of Israel against the Palestinians, the imposer of the sanctions and above all, the America that let us down in 1991.

Now the two strangers had to work together to accomplish a goal Iraqis knew almost nothing about; they knew that America wanted to topple Saddam and secure the oil fields but that's all they knew while America was thinking of a huge transformation for the entire Middle East with Iraq being the key to that transformation.
There was a wide gap between the two but we had no choice but to work together, because in a moment Iraqis didn't choose, America and a group of Iraqi ex-pat leaders were suddenly replacing a regime that controlled everything for too long.
Iraqis were confused and vulnerable and there were too many differences to cope with but we were there and there was nothing we could do about it and we had to prepare ourselves for many transitional stages that some Iraqis thought were improvised and arbitrary while others thought were planned long time ago.

The question keeps ringing…
Was it the right decision to remove Saddam?

I say yes, and that's what most Iraqis said and still say even if they became divided over what happened later…the truth is that virtually no one wants Saddam back.

I will just ignore the weepers, whiners, teenagers and half educated naïve people and their silly rallies as I don't want to waste time on people who can do nothing but blindly oppose everything without thinking.
I will ignore them and focus on the more important goals we want to reach here…

Life stopped and time stopped when Saddam ruled Iraq, actually that totalitarian regime was moving backwards and dragging us with it and nothing could stop the deterioration that began the moment Saddam came to power.
We had to accept the change and live with all that would come along with it whether good or bad.
The democracy we're practicing today in Iraq is the exact opposite of what we had for decades and until three years ago. This democracy carries the essence of life, the differences, the dynamics and yes, the failures but also the seed of a better future.

Before the liberation we were suffering and we had no hope, now we are also suffering but we have hope and I see this hope even in the words of those that are cynical about the outcome of the political process; who say they hope things will be better in four years or eight years…
When Saddam was here we didn't have any hope and we could expect nothing good from a dead regime that cared only about its absolute existence.

Yes. We are facing enormous and dangerous challenges and this is not unexpected because the old will not easily step down and accept the loss; the old will fight back fiercely and the old here is not only Saddam and the Ba'ath, the old can be found among many of our current leaders and the mentality they carry that belong to the same generation that bred Saddam but I believe they will melt away as well because no one can go against the direction of time and the clock cannot be forced backwards.

The green bud looks weak and is buried in the dirt and surrounded by a tough shell but it will break through this covering, pierce the dirt and stand on its feet to announce a new era.
We will not be defeated and orphans of the dark past will get what they deserve and our sacrifices and the sacrifices of those who stand with us shall not go in vain, our sacrifices will pave an easier road for those want to follow us when they decide it's time for them to change.

And yes…Iraq will be the model.

And they REALLY expect to get elected in Nov. on an anti-Bush campaign? LOL LOL LOL

While the democratic party complains about everything THIS President does to protect our Nation:

Sectarian Fighting Undermines Efforts to Stabilize Country

BAGHDAD, Iraq (April 7) - Suicide attackers wearing women's robes blew themselves up Friday in a Shiite mosque in northern Baghdad, killing at least 52 people and wounding more than 160, police said. It was the second major attack against Shiite targets in as many days.

Elsewhere in the capital, a U.S. service member died Friday of wounds suffered while on patrol in western Baghdad, the military said.

The violence came as U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad warned that Iraq faces the possibility of sectarian civil war if efforts to build a national unity government do not succeed, and that such a conflict could affect the entire Middle East.
