This is a very sensitive issue right now, especially to politicians involved in an effort to keep the memorial project from becoming an excessive expense. Personally, I would much prefer that my contribution, assuming that I had money to contribute... would be used to keep their memory alive with college scholarships.

If you are in favor of it, than tomwii why don't you fund the memorial. A great way to spend your eBay money.
I do not see a need or advantage for a memorial to be put there. Would I travel there no. Would you? If they are going to have a memorial for 9-11 all the information should be in one place. Not spread out over the countryside. Do you want one in the middle of the Pentagon? For once I agree with Helen. Invest that money in the youth of today and it will pay dividends in the future. I am happy to see that this republican congressman is bucking that even though a republican congressman is wanting it. Do we owe these causalities a memorial, probably but consolidate it with the rest of the causalities.
Call them what you want tomwii but all you seem to do is come here post your garbage and then leave. This idea is a stupid one.

Congrats to Rep. Taylor to see that this is just wasteful use of tax payer money.
Scholarship would be more beneficial and actually be a help to someone.

Sorry but I agree with Tom on this one.You people complain its a waste of taxpayers what about all those useless "pork barrel projects" we waste money on?? I dont see you complaining about those.

WASHINGTON — Taxpayers will pay for a record $29 billion in wasteful spending this year as members of Congress load the $2.6 trillion budget with nearly 10,000 pet projects that serve local political ends better than national priorities, a watchdog group said Wednesday.
The so-called pork barrel spending includes $1 million for a waterless urinal initiative in Michigan, $500,000 for a teapot museum in North Carolina and $100,000 for a Nevada boxing club, according to Citizens Against Government Waste, a nonpartisan group that claims 1.2 million members and supporters nationwide."
$29 billion in wasterful spending and you're worried about money for a memorial dedicated to a group of damn brave U.S.citizens who prevented a jet liner from crashing into the white house?

So you justify wasting more money just because money has already been wasted?
Would I take time to go to some field in a state full peepa's? Hell no
But I would like to see people benefit from a scholarship fund which would be more benefiting.
BTW who here is going to go see Flight 93 when it comes out?
I know I won't because I really just don't think it can do justice to those who died. I will rent it so I can get all pissed off and not kill some rug hugger.

How much land are they getting for $10 million? And $50 million for the memorial? Good grief!
A few acres (ten or so) of land, in that area, should sell for a lot less, imo. A simple marble memorial would suffice. Even a large one could be purchased for well under $100,000. The rest of the money would be well spent via scholarship funds.
I agree there should be something "on-site", but at what cost?

They want to build a whole visitors center.
Personally, I think it's ridiculous. They are trying to turn it into a tourist spot and I don't think it's going to work. People are not going to rush out to see a hole in the ground.
Put the money towards a section on the memorial in New York. The construction costs there are already bein dealt with so the funds coming from the movie will probably be more than enough to create a simple classy memorial stone at the actual site and a more involved memorial in New York at the trade center site.
