No one I know is even thinking about the bird flu. They say there is nothing you can do anyway. Now I come here and I find that no one is talking about the bird flu. Am I paranoid or what?

I can't be the only one concerned because they are scheduling area meetings at all high schools in the metro area.

Bird Flu Smird Flu, who gives a fat rats ass when we've got bigger things to worry about like say for instance, did you know that the day of the Devil is coming up just next month already.

Yep, that's right folks June 6th, 2006 or 6-6-6 the day of the Devil and the Earth will catch on fire or something on that day and we will all be smited.

I'm getting the horse laugh at the store, too. That's fine, just don't come crying to me when you want rubbing alcohol, masks, gloves, and cheetos. I'm not sharing! ;>

OR

I am wondering how to buy up enough food for 2 years, I saw a program that said it could run that long. I am also looking into a hole in the ground to hide in but so far the Realtors don't seem to have any. Do you think Norad will let me in?

There's a ton of information on the CDC and NIH websites. I think this is something that is so scary and so completely OUT of our control that all most people can do is make jokes, while crossing their fingers behind their backs.

Some general information:

Don't panic!

Nothing to worry about. Intra human transmission of H5N1 is still quite rare - witness the Indonesian family kill off by it a few weeks back. If it does mutate into another virulent "Spanish Flu" strain then there's little you can do beyond the recommended precautions.

At least here in NZ we have been getting our disaster plans ready for an outbreak. Top of the list is to close down airports, and restrict public meetings to prevent transmission. Tamiflu has been stockpiled for the aged and health workers.

Thank you for the intelligent response. I'm not panicking. I just wanted to know what other people were doing to prepare for the possible. No one here seems to be taking it seriously either. They have been scheduling meetings at area high schools to tell you what could happen and what you should have on hand. At the first meeting only eleven people showed up. At work I have been teased mercilessly. Oh well.

NZ is home to several species of wild birds that travel over 11k miles in their migrations, and are species that are being closely watched due to their travel through SE Asia. Closing down the airports will help with human carriers, but I betcha the birds won't care.

In the case of that Indonesian family, the source of the infection hasn't been located, which is worrisome. Officials haven't discounted the possibility that this is a case of human to human transmission.

There isn't any more to worry about now than there has been in the past. There also isn't any LESS.

kasue, people don't remember the last pandemic, there's nobody alive to remind them. I live in a remote area. There are 9 graves in my family's cemetary here on the ranch dated 1915 and 1916. All were flu victims, babies, teens, adults, oldsters. I don't remember it either, but all I have to do is look up on the hill to be reminded that it can happen. We have Tamiflu put away and if we hear that there are cases close by found in poultry, we are prepared to destroy our flock in advance of any sick birds. We'll also stay home and essentially quarantine ourselves till it passes.

profe51, Do you need a prescription to get Tamiflu? We plan on keeping to ourselves if the bird flu gets to our area, too. Unfortunately, my elderly mother and her boyfriend have to go to a dialysis center three times a week and I am concerned that they would be at risk. It isn't like they could just hole up until things calmed down.

profe51, That is interesting that you say your family members died in 1915 and 1916. I think it was 1918 when it hit big here in Iowa. We lost a lot of soldiers at Camp Dodge. Living in close quarters in the barracks had to contribute to the high numbers lost. Do you know how long that pandemic lasted?

Your doctor should have no problem writing you a script for it, but if not, here you go. I've ordered from these folks before when I wasn't headed to Mexico anytime soon, and they are reliable.

I don't know where they're located roadsmith. I know it's overseas somewhere. The orders I've sent to them are always shipped from Tuvalu or someplace in the south pacific, and the medications have always been manufactured in either New Zealand or Australia.
