More from the link. More of the bigdopa-rustydumbo saga.
"That's it, baby," Windows coos, stroke your calves, working its way up to your hard drive. "Just relax, don't worry about a thing." Then come the magic words, the line Windows knows you secretly want to hear, the one guaranteed to send you into OS orbit: "Baby, I'll do it so good you'll think you're using a new MacBook Pro in a wireless cafe in Paris."

profe-fennix-I know you both own Macs.Do you have to have anti-virus progams on your computer-how about software? Are there ANY downsides to a Mac?
I guess I should take this to the E.O....but since ya brought it up LOL

classic, the typical anti-mac stuff you'll here is as follows and I'll respond to it.
1. There's no software for macs.
There are in fact more software apps available for Mac OS that will run on many different versions of the OS than there are for Windows. Sure, there are some limited interest applications that are written for specific purposes that exist for Windows but not for Macs, but the reverse is also true. A Mac's suite of included software that comes with the machine and is designed to run flawlessly with the hardware with no install-driver issues covers pretty much everything the average home user does. Email-web-music-photos-DVD authoring and burning-Video Chat...you name it.
Plus, new Macs can now run Windows XP natively, although for the life of me I can't imagine why that's important. The Mac OS is gorgeous, stable, easy to use and tweak, and hardly ever gets sick.
2. Macs are more expensive.
So are BMW's, what's your point? The fact is, if you go to Apple's website in one window and Dell's in another, look at how Apple's cheapest computer is configured and then add on to Dell's 499 special to get it close to the Apple, you'll find the Dell may in fact cost more. Even if you do pay more for a Mac, you'll save a ton in the long haul on upgrades, system reinstalls, virus hocus pocus and hardware replacements. Macs rarely lose mother boards, power supplies, etc. Their hardware is superb. The reason IT professionals world wide recommend Windows systems to their bosses over Macs is simple: Businesses that do use Macs spend FAR less in IT money. These guys are just protecting their jobs. They know they'd be essentially out of work if not for the endless Windows patches and MalWare installs and updates. Not to mention the network configuration nightmares.
3. Apple's going broke.
uh-huh....
4. You can't play Counterstrike on a Mac.
That's what PeeSee's and XBox's are for.
and finally, in answer to your question: I have owned and used Mac and Windows computers since 1988. I have both now on the ranch network. The one Dell I have I got in a trade, and it now runs Linux because I got sick of the constant Windows updates. It's a file server, nothing more. Read the following and believe me that I am telling you the truth:
The 5 Macs on this ranch are all connected to the internet 24/7. For the most part they are always on. None of them runs any form of spyware, virus, adware or any other kind of protection except for the built in Mac OS X firewall. Since 1988 I've owned probably over a dozen Macs. NONE has ever been infected with spyware, adware, a trojan or any other form of nasty and none has ever needed any form of prophylactic protection.
That's not to say that there won't ever be any malware for Macs, but no less than Symantec recently admitted that there effectively are NO baddies out there for Macintosh computers. The link to that release is here:
They released that article on July 11, which if I'm not mistaken was a Windows XP "Patch Tuesday"
There are a bunch of Apple retail stores in your area, I'd suggest you go to one and PLAY. Forget Best Buy or the others, their sales staffs are often not very Mac savvy. Just go straight to an Apple Store and get your hands on some. The staff will tell you everything you need to know and won't pressure you with today only deals.

No need for anti-virus software since there are no viruses that infect mac. You may have to now if with the new macs which allow you to operate windows within the system but for the general user, No. There just is no need.
As for software... the only thing programs I have not been able to find for a mac are a few games. All others are made for both systems or have a Mac equivalent.
The only downside is cost but even that is no longer an issue with the Mini's and iMacs which are competitively priced.
Best part is that you don't have hardware conflicts, have to spend three hours installing new drivers and diagnosing conflicts or discover that the new toy you just bought with your system is not compatible with the last one you bought. All hardware is plug and play and compatible.
The only problem I have ever had with a Mac was when the battery died in an older model (no longer an issue - no battery in current models) and when I had three pieces of Iomega hardware plugged in at once (but somehow I don't see you as a big Zip or Jaz drive user that you would have both along with an external burner all plugged at once). Even that problem was solved simply by unplugging the burner.

Classic, here's another ongoing conversation at another message board where they are discussing the differences between PC's and Macs but take what is said there with a grain of salt because most of these people are ones that like to play with each others butts, like so many of the liberal posters around the internet do. However, there might be some, a small amount of usefull information that can be gleaned from their conversation.

Thank you people-so if I do get a Mac,I guess I defintitely want one without the XP attachment.
I mostly want it for the video stuff.I dont play many games on the computer. When I get my high def-tv I will get an xbox or ps2-I guess xbox seems the craze nowadays.

also, don't worry about the "Windows attachment" classic. The new Macs will run windows, but Apple computer won't sell it to you. They'll give you a little freebie application that will help you install Windoze on your new Mac if you so desire, but they won't support it and don't recommend it. Neither do I. It is, however, contributing to the increase in sales for new Macs. It makes lots of PC users who are Mac curious more comfortable knowing they can install their familiar system if they need to. I'll bet precious few of them actually do it though.

Classic - you would have no need to. The systems those guys are building at that cost are high end high production level systems that allow for high speed effect rendering and working with monster size files. Nothing you are ever going to do unless you decide to go into competition with Pixar.
All you need is a 599 mini or with your DVd burning habits, maybe the $1200 iMac complete with it's double layer super drive (DVD burner).

fenix is right Classic. You can pay that much for a Dell too, doesn't mean they all cost that much, right? Reading forums won't get you far. Imagine you're a political newbee and you decide to use the Vendio RT as your source of information on politics. Like I said. Get to an Apple store for ALL the info.

One thing to remember classic before you buy an AOL model computer (mac), you need to really think about what you want to use it for and get the one that will suit you best. Because these are not upgradeable to any degree.
Profe's one statement "Won't play counterstrike" is the prime reason macs will never be in the main stream of computers. Gamers run the computer world.
If you enjoy tinkering and upgrading to the best components as they come out, then a mac would not be for you.
Also if you share with friends and family keep in mind, that files created on a mac may not work on a good pc.
posted on July 22, 2006 08:04:21 AM2. Macs are more expensive.
When did that happen? I know that the schools purchase MAC's because the cost to purchase a MAC over a PC is generally cheaper. I personally could use either, as I learned on the MAC's at the school, but also determined that a PC would better fit my needs especially my Ebay needs. I can say the advances in the MAC's over the past 5 years though, not to mention software companies accepting MAC's into the mainstream, have been astronomical.

I could be wrong about this but I believe that Mac gives discounts to schools to purchase their computers for student learning. It's a long-term marketing startegy so that hopefully they can get students hooked early on Mac so that later they may purchase one and promote it's use personally and in business.

This statement has no resembelance to reality

Ditto.
These two statements are why you may not want to pay attention to people that don't actually know anything about Macs, or aparently computers for that matter. A jpg is jpg is a jpg and can be read by any program which can read a jpg no matter what the platform. Same with music files, video files, word processing files, xcel files etc.

Ron is incorrect. There are Macs (Not MACS, Please) that will only accept hard disk and ram upgrades, there are also PC's like that, but the towers are every bit as upgradeable as any PC.
Sharing files is no longer an issue either, as fenix has said. Fact is, your Mac will open files that the average PeeSee user often can't.
stonecold: I listed that as a misconception. Sometimes Macs cost a bit more upfront, but are better equipped out of the box and cost next to nothing in tech support over the long term.
As for discounts, I can tell you as the tech buyer for my school, Dell has been hammering us with incredible discounts for years. We don't bite. Apple's 10% discount to schools is nothing compared to what Dell will do for us, but we've stuck with Apples and always will.

What fenix and profe51 are leaving out classic is that the software you use for word processing, spreadsheets had better be also sold for windows or it will NOT work.
Upgradeable? Not nearly so in the sense you can upgrade a pc. That is why we call macs AOL of computers. Just follow their world.
I have been building my own computers for use over 10 years now, but I enjoy that aspect of being able to control what I want in a computer something you can't do with a mac or a store bought pc.
There will always be something you wanted that one or the other will not have, after you leave the AOL(Apple) store, go to a local computer shop with your list of what you want a computer to do and price it there with the exact software you want.
posted on July 23, 2006 02:08:22 PMWhat fenix and profe51 are leaving out classic is that the software you use for word processing, spreadsheets had better be also sold for windows or it will NOT work.
Once again, you're making a mountain out of a mole hill. The Macintosh word processing/spreadsheet program, called AppleWorks, has the ability to save files as Word Documents. In addition, Microsoft Office for Macintosh, for all it's bloated, goofy interface with that absurd little paperclip, does exist and works quite well. In fact, Microsoft usually manages to release the Mac versions of Office before the Windows versions, sometimes by as much as a year earlier. PowerPoint, no problem, spreadsheets/databases? Ditto. Text doc's? Piece of cake. I use it when I need to send a spreadsheet or document to someone with a PeeSee. There is also OpenOffice, which is an open source project which is free and every bit as powerful as MS Office. OpenOffice will open, work with and save MS Office files.
Ron, your comment is just another version of the "no software" issue I originally mentioned, and it doesn't hold water.
I don't see the upgradeability issue as big for Classic. It's true, you can't readily "build" a Mac from the ground up, although I've known of some who've done it. The fact is, most people want to USE their computers rather than be constantly dicking around with them.
The notion that gamers run the computer world is absurd. Most computers these days are advertising their usability for multimedia, graphics, DVD, Music and photo applications. All you gotta do is watch the TV ads to see it. For these applications in addition to the internet, the Mac is a superb, bug-free platform with a gorgeous suite of included software that just flat works.
Macs will never be in the mainstream of computers? Have you seen Apple's sales reports since the Intel switch? Have you seen Dell's loss statements?? Frankly, if Apple is never in the mainstream that'll be just fine with me.
It's always seemed curious to me that so many Windows users seem so threatened by a platform that has less than 10% market share, they seem to lash out against it with a vehemence that's not commensurate with the platform's general use. I decided a long time ago that that could only be due to jealousy and the fact that misery loves company.

If you mean macs have become more PC like due to MS Office, there's always been Office for Macs. I've used it for at least a dozen years. M$ has always written apps for Macs. If you mean more PC like because they'll run Windows, that's just a fortuitous side effect of switching to Intel, and they switched to Intel NOT so they could run Windows, but because IBM was dragging it's heels in getting a PowerPC G5 chip to run cool enough to work in laptops. As I said, Apple won't support or offer any support for installing Windows on a new Mac. The user is on his own.
I don't know what business worthy means. Big, small? Plenty of businesses use Macs. They aren't the standard by any means, but so what? I've never understood it when I hear somebody say "Well I decided to get a PC because all the businesses use them". What on earth does that have to do with writing letters, making presentations, editing photos, burning movies, checking email and surfing the web? Answer: not a darn thing.
Anyhow, read above... Classic, I'll bet a fairly typical home user, Is clearly fed up with all the crap Windows users are forced to put up with and is looking around. He's not trying to run a business, he'd just like to have a machine that doesn't fall sick every time he goes online and I'll wager he's sick of Tuesday patches.
Mac sales are up Ron, everybody else's are off. Why is that so hard for you to swallow?

See above for why IT persons always recommend Windoze machines. Thier job security often depends upon it.
Several years ago my district switched the school office machines to PC because there was an attendance/grades/behavior etc. program the district Supt. (who is a tech moron) fell in love with at a conference that did not have a Mac version. Our classrooms and lab remain all Macs. At least once a week the district has to send someone out to dick around with the office machines because something has gone wrong/won't work/got infected, you name it. The classroom macs, which are all networked to the office and the internet, virtually NEVER suffer any downtime, and they have KIDS running them most of the time.
