Leaders: Rep. Nancy Pelosi has her own "grapes of wrath" scenario going on.
Is her opposition to enhanced border security due to the fact that the House Democratic leader personally profits from a steady supply of cheap foreign labor?
If Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives, the San Francisco Democrat will not only be the first female speaker, but also the richest.
The liberal Center for Responsive Politics puts her net worth as high as $55 million.
There is no record of Pelosi's ever returning her portion of those "tax cuts for the rich" to the U.S. Treasury. Or any record, for that matter, of using her (dare we use the word?) windfall to give the workers at her Napa Valley vineyards a raise.
As Peter Schweizer notes in his best-selling expose of liberal hypocrisy, "Do As I Say (Not As I Do)," part of the fortune of this defender of the working man is a Napa Valley vineyard worth $25 million that she owns with her husband. The vineyard produces expensive grapes for high-end wines. Napa grapes bring up to $4,000 a ton compared with $300 a ton for, say, San Joaquin grapes.
But Pelosi, winner of the 2003 Cesar Chavez award from the United Farm Workers, hires only nonunion workers and sells these grapes to nonunion wineries.
Schweizer places Pelosi in a chapter titled "Workers of the World Unite Somewhere Else." UFW members need not apply at the Pelosi family vineyards.
Which makes Pelosi's steadfast opposition to any attempts to enhance border security and stem the flow of illegal immigration into the U.S. all the more interesting since she seems to be among those rich employers who financially benefit from a steady supply of cheap foreign labor.
She led the opposition and voted against the Secure Fence Act of 2006 recently signed into law by President Bush to build a 700-mile fence along the U.S.-Mexican border.
She opposed the Real ID Act of 2005, a valuable anti-terror tool, while bragging that Democrats under her leadership "defeated Republican attempts to restrict the easily forged Matricula Consular card" issued by the Mexican government.
She voted against a bill to make employers such as herself financially liable for hospital costs if undocumented employees seek medical attention, preferring that either taxpayers foot the bill or that hospitals close under the burden, as many are doing throughout the Southwest.
In 2005 she voted against barring the issuance of driver's licenses to illegal aliens and against a requirement that businesses use an electronic system to verify whether new hires have the legal right to work in the U.S.
Nor has Pelosi been a fan of employer sanctions against the hiring of illegal aliens.
In 2003, she accused immigration officers of conducting "terrorizing raids" on Wal-Mart stores that led to the arrest of more than 300 illegal aliens.
Loraine Stewart, a farmworker advocate with Napa Valley Community Housing, in a 2004 San Francisco Chronicle article estimated that half of the migrant labor force in the valley consisted of undocumented workers, without whom "not one bottle of wine would get made here."
The people coming across our southern border aren't just seeking better lives. They're joined by drug smugglers and an assortment of people with criminal records.
There are also what Immigration and Customs Enforcement calls OTMs (Other Than Mexicans) among whom potential terrorists could sneak in undetected.
Pelosi apparently puts her financial interests above the security of this nation and the safety of its citizens, exploiting undocumented workers in the process.
If the people at Immigration and Customs are looking for an employer to check out, we know this little vineyard in the Napa Valley.
While the democratic party complains about everything THIS President does to protect our Nation:
What would a Democrat president have done at that point? Apparently, the answer is: Sit back and wait for the next terrorist attack.

It's much too easy to demonize women in the public eye, and when it's done by another woman, it's despicable, Linda.
I guess all we need to ask is whether we want Dennis Hastert to be leading activities--the man who turned a blind eye to problems with the pages.

Peepa, there have been only a few times in my life that I've been accused of losing control. This may in fact be one of them. But nobody'll see it...Being as it's Friday night and all, I have a big old fire built outside. It's getting cold, but not too cold. The boy is gone to a rodeo for the weekend with his sisters, the wife is at an art show in Colorado. That leaves me and the animals to howl at the moon. There's a case of Guinness in an ice chest on the porch and plenty of cigars. The moon almost full is doing it's best to block out the milky way's splash across the sky...Too bad you and helen and kraft and kiara and logan's and dave and roadsmith and Tom and anybody else I forgot couldn't show up here for a few frosties and a good smoke around the fire.
I have been reluctant to celebrate this coming Tuesday in advance, but it's looking more and more like a pretty safe bet.

The invite sounds nice and yes it is too bad we all can't get a look at each other just once. No including the other side for fear of a fist fight breaking out.LOL
In the little town I live in we did have a meeting place to solve the worlds problems. It was a 1826 log cabin made over into a small coffee shop. But the older couple that ran it got burned out from working 7 days a week and sold it to a guy that is making a pizza shop out of the cabin. Some people would call that progress don't ya know.
About 11/7 I am keeping my fingers, toes, arms and legs crossed.

What's the matter? It's obvious that the TRUTH about who YOU all want to be leader of the House must have REALLY stung. ROFLOL.....
pelosi is a typical progressive/socialist, liberal....say one thing...do another. Why should it bother any of you anti-Bushites to see she doesn't REALLY support what she pretends she does? LOL Better to have the TRUTH out now...than later. If she is so deceptive about ONE issue....she's most likely that way about most of them...if not all of them.
=============
And roadsmith has some sort of a HUGE bias about the truth being stated about her liberal women politicans. lol
This isn't the first time she's accused me of 'speaking out against a women'. Isn't that funny? The feminists like her want women to be 'equal' have the same thing men do/have worked for. BUT when it gets down to their weaknesses...faults....roadsmith starts insulting others
with those same women ARE TREATED EQUALLY. In her liberal mind, we must NEVER say anything negative about a women...even IF she's a hypocrite. Why? Just because she IS a women.
LOL What utter nonsense.
To that I say: A POLITICAN is a POLITICAN....whether they be man OR women. And the voters DESERVE to know the truth about the POLITICAN, whether they be a man or a women.
GENDER makes NO difference.
And it shouldn't. Her position sounds like so many when it's between a white or black person. Skin color should make NO difference.
It's the actions of the person that matter......
And IF they're hypocrites then they're hypocrites....no matter their race nor gender.
And as we see in the OP.....pelosi is a hypocrite of the worst kind.

My point, Linda, is that women should understand what it's like out there in the big world of work. Women have made terrific strides in the last century, but we still have a long way to go; we still encounter bias in the workplace, and I'd just hope that women (maybe not you?) would be sensitive to that.
In my lifetime, I've seen women like Eleanor Roosevelt and others in politics villified beyond the normal amount of criticism.
I'm just saying--and it's true--that it's much easier to demonize a woman who stands out from the crowd than it is for a man.
I won't be responding to any more of your comments along these lines. I think you're hopeless.

A look at Pelosi's voting record
TODAY'S EDITORIAL
November 3, 2006
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi would bring to the office a level of left-wing liberalism that will be unprecedented.
In the National Journal's 2005 ideological ratings, which were based on scores of votes, Mrs. Pelosi was ranked more liberal than 91 percent of her House colleagues on economic issues, 96 percent on social matters and 82 percent on foreign-policy issues.
Here are her relative rankings (economic, social, foreign)
for 2004 (93, 88, 81),
2003 (92, 89, 70),
2002 (88, 84, 90) and
2001 (94, 83, 93).
Until she received a 95 percent liberal rating in 2005 from the Americans for Democratic Action (the nation's pre-eminent liberal organization), Mrs. Pelosi had racked up five consecutive years (2000-04) of 100 percent ratings.
Her lifetime ADA rating is 96 percent.
Last year, the American Conservative Union gave her a 0 rating.
Her lifetime ACU rating is 3 percent.
Typical for her 20-year House career, Mrs. Pelosi received a 100 percent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America last year
...and a 0 rating from the National Right to Life Committee.
A Roman Catholic who has repeatedly voted to uphold partial-birth abortion,
who has voted against parental notification when minor children seek abortion
and who has shown no concern for the rights of the innocent unborn,
Mrs. Pelosi has consistently opposed the death penalty.
Over the years, Mrs. Pelosi has consistently voted against welfare reform, including the 1996 bill signed by President Clinton and its re-authorization.
In 1998, she opposed a constitutional amendment to permit school prayer in the classroom.
In 1999, she opposed allowing state and local governments to display the Ten Commandments on public property, including schools.
She has voted against education IRAs.
In 2003, she opposed a $10 million program for school vouchers in the District of Columbia.
That same year she voted against the 10-year $400 billion Medicare prescription-drug bill because she preferred one that was twice as expensive.
Mrs. Pelosi has repeatedly voted for tax increases and opposed tax cuts, even the 2001 bill that doubled the child tax credit to $1,000, among other cuts.
As the United States has become increasingly dependent on foreign sources for oil,
...Mrs. Pelosi has always opposed drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
In recent years, she has become protectionist -- leading the opposition in 2000 against then-President Clinton's successful effort to establish permanent normal trade relations with China.
She also opposed giving Mr. Clinton and Mr. Bush trade-promotion authority;
..and in 2005 she voted against the Central American Free Trade Agreement.
In 2004, she voted to end Radio Marti broadcasts to Cuba.
She voted to reduce funds for the B-2 intercontinental bomber, which performed superbly in the 1999 Kosovo War, in 2001 in Afghanistan and in Iraq.
Mrs. Pelosi has repeatedly opposed anti-missile defense, even as a nuclear-armed North Korea has tested ballistic missiles.

Pelosi's budget votes
TODAY'S EDITORIAL
November 2, 2006
If Democrats gain 15 or more House seats next week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the quintessential San Francisco Democrat, will almost certainly become speaker of the House, a position that places her two heartbeats from the presidency during wartime.
One of the House's most liberal members, Mrs. Pelosi perhaps best demonstrated bona fides midway through her 20-year career in the House.
In the spring of 1997, when the Republican-controlled Congress was negotiating with then-President Clinton over the details of a budget resolution that would balance the books by 2002, the House considered several competing five-year plans. Mrs. Pelosi voted against the plan backed by Mr. Clinton and nearly two-thirds of House Democrats.
Over the five years, it would have produced a balanced budget by 2002, while cutting taxes by $85 billion and reducing projected spending by $280 billion (including $115 billion for Medicare, $14 billion for Medicaid and $140 billion in discretionary outlays). The reductions in the rate of growth in projected health-care spending would not have prevented significant increases in both programs over the five-year period (Medicare, 49 percent; Medicaid, 44 percent). Inflation-adjusted defense spending, which had already fallen 28 percent over the previous eight years, would continue to decline as nominal defense outlays marginally increased by $3 billion from 1997 to 2002.
Instead of supporting the Clinton plan, which was embraced by 132 House Democrats, Mrs. Pelosi voted for three alternative five-year plans. She supported Maxine Waters' Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) substitute plan, which would have slashed nominal defense spending by $190 billion and raised taxes by $195 billion.
Mrs. Pelosi also voted for George Brown's substitute resolution, which would have frozen defense spending at 1997 levels (not much different from the plan supported by Mr. Clinton and Democratic and Republican majorities), eliminated the tax cuts and Medicaid reductions and increased discretionary spending on education, training, transportation, science, energy and the environment.
She also supported Joseph Kennedy's substitute plan, which would have eliminated the tax cuts, reduced defense spending and raised non-defense discretionary spending by more than $103 billion.
Just this past May, Mrs. Pelosi voted for the CBC substitute budget resolution that called for more than $517 billion in tax increases over the next five years, compared to the resolution supported by the majority.
Mrs. Pelosi joined a majority of her Democratic colleagues by voting against the October 2002 resolution authorizing the use of force against Iraq. (She also opposed the use of force against Iraq in 1991.)
Perhaps more significantly, in October 2003, with U.S. military forces engaged throughout Iraq, she voted against the $87 billion supplemental appropriation to fund the war effort.
As speaker, she would be in a position to execute the recent threat by Rep. Charlie Rangel, one of more than 70 Democratic members of the "Out-of-Iraq Caucus,"
to seek the elimination of funding for military operations in Iraq.
In other words, she would remain the quintessential San Francisco Democrat.
=============
Yep....want your taxes RAISED??? Then vote those dem reps into office. It's guaranteed they'll spend your tax dollars QUICKER than the republicans ever thought of doing. lol

more desperate BS
Or any record, for that matter, of using her (dare we use the word?) windfall to give the workers at her Napa Valley vineyards a raise.
Why would there be a record for some book writer to see?
I give my shearers a raise and don't make a public record of it.
They're seasonal contract workers just like grape pickers are.
What I pay them is between me and my accountant.
I would venture a bet though that she paid more this year for pickers,
as farmers throughout California were hurting for laborers to harvest their crops due to crackdowns at the border.
Additionally, this clipping makes it look like Pelosi is some big deal vinter,
making jillions off the wine biz while the poor pickers suffer.
In fact, according to NapaValleyOnline.com's vineyard list, the Pelosi's own two Napa parcels that total a bit less than 25 acres, of which 9 acres are in grapes.
Let's do a little math, class. The article claims Napa grapes go for 4,000 dollars a ton.
Sure, some do, but according to the California Agrigultural Statistical Service, District 4 (Napa County) grapes received the highest average price of $2,989.36 per ton during the 2005 crush, the last statistic available.
That was a 2% increase over the 04 crush.
Now, Nancy, the evil wine magnate has 9 acres growing.
Assuming, and it is a pretty big assumption, that she harvests equal to the California average of 6 tons per acre
and sells it all without any tonnage loss for, oh what the heck let's give her 3K per ton, a bit over the REAL Napa Valley average price,
to account for any increase that may have happened,
how much did she gross on her evil wine empire?
3K per ton x 6 = 18,000 per acre x 9acres =162,000 US
dollars.
Not exactly small change, but not a fortune either. Particularly when you consider that this is total gross, and especially if you understand that in general,
agriculture has the lowest and riskiest net returns of almost any business.
Remember that this is absolute gross sales of the maximaum harvest.
Subtract out all of the costs of maintaining a farm and paying employees and other costs and it's pretty obvious that Pelosi isn't exactly the evil hypocrite the author'd like us to believe.
Just another example of grabbing for straws while the ship sinks under the combined weight of the war, the deficit and the Republican party's despicable state of moral decrepitude and hypocrisy.

'Course I'm not, Linda. All I did was respond to your posts some. The thread of course is about Nancy Pelosi, and about your trying to remove the scales from our eyes so's we can see what a lying snake pinko liberal commie she really is. Thank you very much for your efforts on our miserable behalf. I currently have myself a prioritizing piece of paper right here in front of me. I folded it in half from the top down and creased it that way so I could have an easy way do draw a line down the middle with my favorite big fat primary school pencil which I sharpened with my pocket knife. On the left at the top I wrote "Nancy Pelosi in charge of the House", on the right side at the top I wrote "-insert name after Hastert quits in shame or goes to jail-Republican in charge of the House". Now I am starting to list stuff under each column. Since Democrats haven't been in charge of the house in quite some time, no facts present themselves. The right side is easier to put stuff on. Here's what I have so far:
Lies about WMD
Lies about Al Qaeda
Lies about family values and morals
No Child Left Untested
The Theft of Habeas Corpus
The abrogation of basic rights for American Citizens
The Legalization of Unreasonable Search
Enron
Dick Cheney
Karl Rove
Abramoff
Dennis Hastert and his other buttboys covering for Foley
There was a time when I voted Republican as often as I voted for Dems. That time is gone. The party has been usurped by liars and cheats who are so far removed from classic American conservatism that it makes me want to vomit, and I am not alone. You love to call me a liberal and I am more than happy to let you if it distinguishes me from these evil, deceitful scum. In short darlin', your ranting will change no minds here. I'd vote for the DEVIL HIMSELF in place of ANYONE who calls himself a Republican these days.
