At this point I can't eat dark vegetables anyway....but I don't think I'd ever buy any 'fresh' food in those bags anymore.

We've had the contamination with scallions....the lettuce combinations ...and now this spinach problem.

I'd buy fresh, out of the bag, or fresh frozen.

Naw, classic, he ate his spinach out of a can....

...it was processed...thus bacteria gone.

Funny how after all these years Popeye is still remembered. His own fan club that meets each September...ebay sellers selling pictures of his cans of spinach...and now a U.S. postage stamp in his honor.

lol

Now our grandkids get to watch chainsaw murderers.

bebe- Was that the movie in which Robin Williams played Popeye and Shelley Duvall played Olive? I enjoyed that movie. Robin Williams was a perfect choice for Popeye.

Mingo, you're right. I think the food supply in this country is it's absolutely weakest link as far as safety goes. The average American has NO CLUE where any of the food he eats comes from, or how it was handled along the way or by whom. It would be possible and easy to spread diseases far worse than E-Coli all over the place in record time.

The last time we had this same outbreak of E-coli occur...it was on the East coast I believe.

And it too was blamed on infected scallions from mexico. Anyone heard where these scallions were from this time?

We cannot expect not to have occurances like this when our produce comes from other nations where their own health standards are way below ours.

edited to correct....it did not cause e-coli...it caused many to come down with hepatitis. sorry.

BIG BROTHER again steps into our private lives....telling us THEY know better than we ever could what we should eat and in what quanities.

Since we are so stupid we obviously can't make those decisions on our own....in NY they've now decided they will regulate the eateries WE choose to buy from.

tsk tsk tsk

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20061206/D8LRAK6G0.html

Oh yea....it's ALL in OUR best interests that big brother 'take care of us'....in every way they can INTRUDE into our lives/choices.

Are you whining that artificial trans fats are being banned from restaurants in NY? Why would anyone even want to eat a man-made fat? It can make you fat and it clogs your arteries contributing to heart disease and it costs the health system more to care for all those that do that to their bodies.

The Federal Government's legislation that requires labeling food contents with trans fats is a good thing and not everyone was aware of the crap they were eating or what they were feeding their kids.

A modern nation should be concerned about the health of their citizens ........ unless you approve of a whole nation of fatties cruising walmart in their scooters and that's your view of an ideal country?

Again, socialists often can't see what they speak.

NO one said that IF we don't continue to allow BIG BROTHER to make our decisions FOR US.....that we won't/can't make them ourselves.

But <sigh> too many who want government to regulate our lives away.....see that as the ONLY answer.

Can't figure one out for themselves...and want these regulations to govern those ADULTS who CAN....all by themselves.....without nanny gov. telling them OR businesses what they HAVE to do.

One track minds like kiara's.....ONLY GOV. can do these thing. WRONG

I have paid attention to where scallions come from ,when I am in a supermarket and the clerk brings out a box of scallion,it always said made in mexico.
At Kroeger it said made in New Jersey.

Where did I say that only government can do these things, Liar_K?

It's everyone's responsibility to contribute to healthy lifestyles and if it takes government legislation for some things such as food labeling so citizens become more aware then all the better.

No one is telling you that you can't eat trans fats if that is your choice of a preferable meal. Go for it. Pig out and be happy. Maybe they should do some studies and see if trans fats contribute to the nastiness and negativity you suffer from.

hwahwa - Ours are marked also from mexico. All out fruits and vegetables have teeny, tiny little stickers on them...informing customers where they came from. I use those as guidelines to help me decide which I ill buy and which I won't. It's nice having that info. available.

========

I understand that you will NEVER grasp that people can make decisions, AWARE decisions, without gov. intervention.

I also understand those who want MORE and MORE GOV. regulation/intervention over business often would also like the communist way of gov. OWNING business.

My position is KEEP GOV. out of everything we possibly can.....especially when it comes to what WE chose to do in our personal lives....like what we eat...smoke...etc.

You know....like you do when it comes to what people do in their bedrooms....what illegal drugs they smoke..making them legal etc.

It's called FREEDOM from gov.

with the exception of the peruvian grapes that had EColi contamination a few years ago, most of the recent problems were with domestic products. The spinach in question was from california. Thinking a product is cleaner because it comes from a particular country is naive to the extreme. All it takes is someone who doesn't was their hands after they use the bathroom before they go back to bagging the spinach. EColi is non-discriminatory. We all carry it.

came from CA....mostly likely grown and harvested by mexicans.....illegals I'd bet.

And mexico/mexicans from mexico haven't been raised with the best hygiene....so contamination would more likely come from that source....rather than from American's who ARE taught and raised with extremely good hygiene.

If it takes government legislation to ensure my food safety I'm all for it. That includes legislation for the pesticides used on it or the preservatives mixed with it, to all the handlers along the way right to the market where I purchase it because a consumer has no possible way to check all of that. It's doubtful the government can legislate washing hands after using the bathroom though. Just because people are taught hygiene it doesn't mean they practice it.

It's my responsibility to try to choose the safest foods I can and the ones that will keep me healthiest and it's my responsibility to handle them in a safe manner until they are consumed.
