Do you think you could go a year without buying anything new? I buy most of my electronics and small appliances new but most of my furniture is used because I find the older wooden pieces are more sturdy and have more character than the expensive new stuff out there and some of it is fun to paint.

I have a cat that sharpens her claws on the couch and some of the chairs and I would never get her declawed so I won't buy those new anymore either but I doubt I'd buy a used mattress. I don't shop nearly as much as I used to.

This group went for a year without trying to buy anything new though they exempted a few items for health and safety reasons. They are middle-age professionals who can afford to shop recreationally and the article tells of the results.

Kiara, at the risk of appearing to leech onto you or stalk you .....

I haven't bought much new, except for a mattress, refrigerator(went for years with "used", washer/dryer, (stove was new but bought at an auction for $35.00), clothes, computer and a garage, in 30 years!!
And I could easily give up ANY shopping...except for antique stores where I don't buy anything new.
My husband does the grocery shopping...I hate it!
I, too, buy older furniture, the solid classic stuff that lasts forever and is so much cheaper(in most cases) than the cheap junk they make nowadays. It also has VALUE when I tire of it and sell it!

Even linens...love the vintage sheets, pillowcases, towels from an age when they were AMERICAN made and top quality.

Kiara,

Being in the business of buying and selling we don't buy much "new" and never have. Some people in my business can surround themselves with beautiful things and works of art on a beer mans pocket book. It takes years to accomplish but its very possible.

What did we buy last year that was "new" for our house, I bet we didn't spend over $500.00 all year on "new" and that includes a couple "new" cell phones. We did spend much more buying a Handel Lamp we like. HA HA.

Simply put my good wife and I are like bebeboom we shop almost everyday but not for "new" things. If I don't shop for 2 or 3 days I get antsy.

Ha! Bigpeepa, I need an antique "fix" on a regular basis, too!
I can last longer than a few days but a week is too long! Even if I just look and don't buy...I gotta be around them!!!

I bought a new pickup last year, and before christmas I got my year's supply of button fly 501's and go-withs. I doubt there'll be much of anything new bought around here for the duration of 2007, unless the boy has another growth spurt. He's 13 and 5'11" tall and we wear the same size clothes and boots, so I'm hoping he's about done. Stores make my head hurt and they're a long ways away.

Oh, pardon me Bear. I must have missed another invisible rule here for the new year where only news stories are allowed to be posted from now on.

mingotree,
About twice a year I turn off all the electric lights, fire up the kerosene lamps and candles. I might wind up a music box and let my imagination run wild. I think what it was like living in the 18th and 19th century.

I think about camel rug caravans in the east, whaling ships in New England,Ivory and pearl traders in Africa etc. In other words I think about some items that surround me like who made them and why were they made was it for profit or from their heart, how did they get to America and why. Its just fun and fantasy plus a hell of a lot better than reading the grunts, lies and overall bull roar by some posters here. Flop splash, flop splash is all their whole miserable life is about just a bunch of flop splash BULL ROAR.

Peepa, I've never seen this side of you, you romantic soul! That's totally awesome.

Kiara, 2006 was an expensive year - new windows, new furnace and a new car. By the time it's all done, I'll be broke, ugly and in bad health. This year HAS to be better!!
