Iraqi voices: Escaping abroad
The United Nations estimates two million Iraqis have fled to neighbouring countries to escape sectarian violence. It's estimated that 50,000 Iraqis flee the country every month.
Many of them choose Syria and Jordan, where they often face extreme hardship. Their refugee status gives them no automatic benefits.

UN makes $60m Iraq refugee appeal
A total of 1.7 million people have been displaced within Iraq
The United Nations' refugee body has appealed for $60m (£30.8m, 45m euros) in emergency aid for those fleeing violence in Iraq.
One in eight of Iraqis have now left their homes, with up to 50,000 people leaving each month, the UNHCR said.
It said the exodus was the largest long-term movement since the displacement of the Palestinians after the creation of Israel in 1948.
Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon are hosting most of the country's refugees.
See map showing Iraqi migration
"The longer this conflict goes on, the more difficult it becomes for the hundreds of thousands of people displaced," UNHCR head Antonio Guterres said.
The agency said that about 12% of Iraqis had fled their homes due to the violence that has spread through the country since the 2003 US-led invasion.
But it also said that many had left long before the current conflict began.
Acute poverty
The UNHCR estimates that the number of Iraqis living beyond the country's borders as refugees stands at two million and a further 1.7 million live within the borders as displaced people.
But it warns the number of internally displaced - those forced to leave their homes but not the country - could reach 2.7 million by the end of the year.
Unremitting violence in Iraq will likely mean continued mass internal and external displacement
Antonio Guterres

Iraqi refugees' stories
Of those who have fled Iraq, the UNHCR estimates that up to one million Iraqis are living in Syria; up to 700,000 in neighbouring Jordan; between 20,000 and 80,000 in Egypt and up to 40,000 in Lebanon.
Many of these refugees live in conditions of acute poverty and the agency says that there is growing evidence of women turning to prostitution.
In Syria, for example, almost a third of Iraqi refugee children do not go to school.
The agency has also urged neighbouring countries who are hosting refugees to keep their borders open because Iraq's continuing violence will fuel further floods of refugees.
"Unremitting violence in Iraq will likely mean continued mass internal and external displacement affecting much of the surrounding region," Mr Guterres said.""""
I can't seem to find how much money the U.S. sends to aid these refugees...but with the complete lack of oversight or accounting for money( YOUR TAX DOLLARS) sent to Iraq ...I guess I won't find an answer

For those who insist how much better it is there, I'd like to see them trade their home for one over there and allow the Iraqi family to live here in their home. It would make a great reality show and something I'd probably watch. I wonder how long they would last? Drama, comedy........ the works.

Good idea, Kiara!!!
I wonder how many in here would be willing to do that?
Afterall, they insist things are so wonderful in Iraq, they should jump at the chance to live there!
And they worship and adore the people our troops are dying for so they should welcome them into their homes....this would certainly help those Iraqi refugees who are fleeing Iraq(THE Vacation Destination of the Middle East) by the millions!

Well...I'd like to see the same from you. AFTER we did as you want to see done. [b]Let's see you live there and watch and be involved in the SLAUGHTER that WILL take place IF we were to leave now. Giving a VICTORY to the terrorists.
You could enjoy that 'scene' as well. A repeat of what your ilk caused to happen when we left VN.

LOL! I asked first!
SOME still deny the slaughter that has taken place and continues to take place at an escalating pace !! Just can't put themselves where their mouth is
Only a very small minority suggest that we leave immediately....MOST (Democrats and Republicans) favor a slow withdrawal as IRAQIs take responsibility.
In case some haven't noticed...the situation is getting worse under bush ...the Non-plan isn't working.

And I had nothing at all to do with what happened in Vietnam so you can leave that out too when you label me trying to point fingers to cover another mess that I wasn't responsible for.
As far as Iraq, you've spent hours trying to convince everyone how great it is there now. I suggested before that you go over and report but this is much better. You'd be opening your heart and home to those less fortunate while you have the good fortune to experience exactly all the good things that you've claimed your country has brought to Iraq. The news yesterday reported that the U.S. AirForce had bomb areas where suspected TERRORISTS were in Africa.
This is NOT a war limited to IRAQ. It's a war against GLOBAL terrorists.
It appears to me, sadly, that some on the left haven't a CLUE as to what is going on and all they care about is blaming this President for fighting terrorism.
I think they need to be able to look out a little further than the length of their noses. And see what ANY American president is going to be dealing with.....hopefully fighting against most likely... for generations to come.

Why They Fight
And what it means for us.
BY PETER WEHNER
Tuesday, January 9, 2007 12:01 a.m. EST
President Bush has said that the war against global jihadism is more than a military conflict; it is the decisive ideological struggle of the 21st century.
We are still in the early years of the struggle.
The civilized world will either rise to the challenge and prevail against this latest form of barbarism, or grief and death will visit us and other innocents on a massive scale.
Given the stakes involved in this war and how little is known, even now, about what is at the core of this conflict, it is worth reviewing in some detail the nature of our enemy--including disaggregating who they are (Shia and Sunni extremists), what they believe and why they believe it, and the implications of that for America and the West.
Islam in the World Today
The enemy we face is not Islam per se; rather, we face a global network of extremists who are driven by a twisted vision of Islam.
These jihadists are certainly a minority within Islam--but they exist, they are dangerous and resolute, in some places they are ascendant, and they need to be confronted and defeated.
It's worth looking at Islam more broadly. It is the second-largest religion in the world, with around 1.3 billion adherents. Islam is the dominant religion throughout the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Indonesia, which alone claims more than 170 million adherents. There are also more than 100 million Muslims living in India.

That's NOT what you said in the post I responded to kiara.....it's your little TWIST [as usual] of what I've said.
Yes, I sure did post many threads about ALL the "good" things that were happening in Iraq. Were they FALSE???? NOPE...they were true.
I've repeatedly stated that what the wackos refuse to acknowledge is that these problems are NOT happening in ALL of Iraq....but rather just three or four areas there.
The LEFT REFUSES to acknowledge that MOST, the majority of areas in Iraq were and some still are experiencing a MUCH different situation than the three or four areas are.
But the wackos who want America to leave the Iraqi people there to be SLAUGHTERED, like you kiara, only focus on the negative that has gone on.
Imo, you're nothing more than cowards, defeatists, against America succeeding, and the list of negatives I see you as supporting is VERY very long.
It's people like you that forced our failure in VN....and now you're doing the exact same thing.
Yes, we were building and re-constructing many areas of Iraq. You chose to DENY the FACTS.
You're nothing but a NEGATIVE defeatist who would like to see nothing more than an American DEFEAT.
Well...I don't agree with one position you take. And it wouldn't matter to me if a DEMOCRATIC president had made these same decisions about this war in Afghanistan and Iraq...I'd STILL be supporting them.
Just as most ALL our democratic leaders did...until things get a little harder....then they want to RETREAT....
Thank God our founding fathers didn't feel that way as we were fighting for our independence from England. Thank God all our Presidents haven't felt that way during WWI or WWII.
It's people like you kiara, that ROT America from the inside and to me are NO different than our muslim enemies.

I can only be so very thankful that not ALL the dems agree with the radical left when it comes to what we should do now.
======================
THE TOP 10 WAYS THE LEFT ENABLES TERRORISM
1. Articles from clueless academics like Cole focus on past policy mistakes from previous administrations (both Democrat and Republican). Those backward thinking poseurs, Cole among them, actively undermine current policy that corrects the philosophical and ethical underpinnings of those mistakes; as well as to generally undermine and discredit our country as a whole.
2. Ex-presidents (also here and here) ; as well as president wannabes indulge their narcissistic longings and place any common sense they might have on hold. These pseudo-patriotic bozos (or summer soldiers, if you will) gratuitously attack the current administration's policies for personal gain. They do not offer any alternative plan--except for surrender, of course--but feel it is perfectly appropriate in the middle of a war to offer their worthless opinions and enable the terrorists we are waging war against.
3. News articles from the MSM that, with pathological hysteria, regularly sensationalize military deaths in Iraq--the lowest number of war fatalities from any war that the US has ever fought. New milestones are invented every day to undermine the war effort and to advance the antiwar, anti-US, leftist agenda.
In the link above, the subtext of the article suggests that if military deaths in Iraq exceed 9/11 then the war is a failure! Aren't you glad these editors and journalists weren't around in early 1942, when the death toll in WWII would have surpassed Pearl Harbor? We would all be speaking German or Japanese now.
4. The UN calls for a cease-fire in Somalia --immediately after Ethiopian troops begin to crush the militant, murderous religious fanatics of Al Qaeda. What does the UN care that these fanatics were trying to institute another taliban-like reign on the hapless citizens of Somalia?
About their atrocities, the UN has nothing to say. Just as they have very little to say about Darfur; just as they have little to say about Hezbollah and the Palestinian aggression since they are too busy condemning Israel and the US.
5. The abject failure on the part of the press to report on the economic successes and booming economy in Iraq.
Outside of Baghdad things aren't so grim as the MSM would have you believe, but to put the violence in perspective would be contrary to the official leftist template that desperately needs Bush and the U.S. to fail in Iraq.
6. The deliberate and opportunistic distortion of articles such as this one, which puts words into a newly dead ex-president's mouth in an attempt to discredit the current president. Pathetic, but nevertheless effective. Everyone sees the Post article--but who will notice this one that put's the words in context?
7. There are over 150,000 individual troops in Iraq. Are we now to poll them to decide if every military decision in a war meets with their approval? How insane is that? But once again, it serves to shore up the MSM and left's socialist template of of the poor, oppressed U.S. military personnel; that is when they aren't promoting the alternative template that U.S. military personnel themselves are oppressive, barbaric and murderous tyrants.
8. The rage and vituperative onslaught against this man--one of their own; and their vice-presidential candidate in 2000--who dares to think outside their ideological box when the welfare of the U.S. is at stake.
The Islamofascists know they can always count on the brain-impaired Kos Kidz and the dementors of the DU to support their strategic objectives.
9. The ongoing distortions from the many crooks and liars of the left blogsphere in their delusional attempts to convince themselves that the real "enemy of civilization" is George W. Bush and not the terrorist fanatics blowing people up all over the globe.
This is certainly very brave of them (i.e., just like those courageous Dixie Chicks who have suffered a loss of --gasp!--fame and box office receipts when they dared to criticize the tyrannical Bush)--speaking "truth to power" and all.
As you might imagine, their rantings are the nourishment and soul food that actively enables the real fascists and theocrats --but the left gets to feel good about themselves, and that hallucinatory sense of moral and intellectual superiority they experience is all that matters in their little bubble.
Check out this roundup of leftist hysteria at Gateway Pundit over the execution of Saddam Hussein by the Iraqis. It was much the same when Zarqawi was killed by US forces; and they will undoubtedly howl in disbelief and rage when news of Osama's demise is certain.
Let me be perfectly clear:
THEY DO NOT WANT THE US TO WIN IN IRAQ OR THE WAR ON TERROR.
They sell their country out regularly because they are so blinded by hate for George Bush. This promulgation of this kind of mindless rot that erodes the country from within is just as effective as any suicide bomber.
It must please the enemy to no end that they have so many willing allies working for them right here, right now.
10. Last but not least, don't take it from me--just listen to what the head honcho of Al Qaeda says. As Al Qaeda sees it, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and it justifiably considers the recent antics of idiotish Democrats (who constantly seek to discredit their mortal enemy Bush by undermining the Iraq war, as well as the larger war with Islamofascist thugs like Al Qaeda)as somewhat helpful to their plan for world domination.
The Democratic Party, the offical mouthpiece of the lunatic left these days, is so far gone in its narcissistic indulgences that it is wholly unable to step back and consider how their behavior has made this country weak and vulnerable to homicidal organizations like Al Qaeda.
For a litle bit of cheap glory they can pander to their leftist base, they are perfectly happy to give Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups the ammunition they need to continue their campaign against civilization. Hence their opposition to every single initiative by the current administration to monitor and thwart terrorist planning.

Here's an update on our strike in Africa
From the NYT yet....lol
U.S. Airstrike Aims at Qaeda Cell in Somalia
By DAVID S. CLOUD
Published: January 9, 2007
WASHINGTON, Jan. 8 — A United States Air Force gunship carried out a strike Sunday night against suspected operatives of Al Qaeda in southern Somalia, a senior Pentagon official said Monday night.
The attack by an AC-130 gunship, which is operated by the Special Forces Command, is believed to have produced multiple casualties, the official said. It was not known Monday night whether the casualties included members of a Qaeda cell that American officials have long suspected was hiding in Somalia.
Special Forces units operating from an American base in Djibouti are conducting a hunt for Qaeda operatives who have been forced to flee Mogadishu, the Somali capital, since Islamic militants were driven from there by an Ethiopian military offensive last month.
The American attack was first reported by CBS News.
The Special Forces attack is the first military action in Somalia that Pentagon officials have acknowledged since American troops departed the lawless country in the wake of the infamous "Black Hawk Down" episode in 1993, when 18 American soldiers were killed in street fighting in Mogadishu.
American officials have long suspected that a handful of Qaeda suspects responsible for the 1998 embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania have been hiding inside Somalia, a country that has not had a central government since 1991.
The search for the terrorist suspects has driven American policy toward Somalia for several years.
Earlier this year, the Central Intelligence Agency began making cash payments to a group of Somali warlords who pledged to help hunt down members of the Qaeda cell.
After Islamist militias took control of Mogadishu in the summer, officials in Washington charged that the Islamists had ties to the terror suspects, and made demands for their handover to American custody.
The Ethiopian military offensive that began last month recently drove the Islamists from the seaside Somali capital, raising hopes within Washington that the Qaeda operatives might surface as they fled the protection of the Islamists.
The Islamists have retreated to areas around the southern port city of Kismayo. Ethiopian officials have said they have intelligence reports that members of the Qaeda cell were hiding near the city.
The AC-130 gunship is a heavily armed propeller plane that, because of its slow speed, operates primarily at night and can direct an immense barrage of gunfire onto a target as it circles overhead.
The attack against suspected Qaeda operatives is the sort of targeted operation that senior Bush administration officials have been pressing the Special Operation Command, based in Tampa, Fla., to undertake in recent years.
But officials have said that Special Operations forces have had difficulty carrying out targeted strikes in the past because of the difficulty establishing the whereabouts of wanted terrorists or getting forces in place when a suspected militant is located.
The Central Intelligence Agency has killed a small number of suspected Qaeda members, using a pilotless drone armed with a missile. Among them were five people killed in Yemen in 2002.

Democrats in House push through anti-terror package
Updated 1/9/2007 10:11 PM ET
By Mimi Hall, USA TODAY
In their first piece of legislation since assuming control of the House of Representatives for the first time in 12 years, Democrats on Tuesday pushed through sweeping homeland security requirements.
Their bill aims to tighten security at ports and on airplanes, improve emergency planning and prevent future terrorism. It passed 299-128.
"The terrorist threat has not diminished five years after 9/11," said Carie Lemack, a security activist whose mother died in the 2001 terrorist attacks.
The House vote fulfilled a campaign promise by Democrats to enact recommendations made three years ago by the commission that investigated 9/11. "The 9/11 Commission gave us a blueprint for better security, which was not meant to sit on a shelf and collect dust," Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., said.
Some Republicans complained that the bill, which is expected to be considered in the Senate in the next month, was rammed through the House with little debate and no input from them. Others said it would be impossible to implement.
Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Calif., former chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, chided Democrats for passing a bill "without any indication as to where the money might be coming from." He said "tens of billions of dollars" would be needed, meaning the bill amounted to "a statement of policy that is little more than a press release."

LOL cheryl - They've sure fooled you haven't they?
Notice they made NO mention of actually FUNDING this.
And I've read estimates that it's going to cost apprx. $53 Billion dollars.
Have any idea where they're going to come up with THAT funding? lol
from your own article: "meaning the bill amounted to "a statement of policy that is little more than a press release."
It's a bill to make it LOOK like they're doing something.
Now then....they also said they were going to REDUCE spending. lol
This is what you call REDUCING it? lol
CHA-CHING......one of many....
We'll see how well it 'fairs' in the Senate now. lol
"While the democratic party complains about everything THIS President does to protect our Nation": "What would a Democrat president have done at that point?"
"Apparently, the answer is: Sit back and wait for the next terrorist attack."
