From the Salt Lake City Tribune:
Kirby: We're still throwing stones of intolerance
Robert Kirby
Tribune columnist
One of my favorite parts of the Bible is the New Testament story about scribes and Pharisees preparing to stone an adulterous woman.
Back then, it was OK to assassinate not only a person's character, but the person as well. So, they hauled some rocks and this poor gal before Jesus and asked if it was OK to pound her into jam.
It was, of course, a trick question. An early form of Republicans, the scribes and Pharisees secretly hoped to force the Savior of the World into a bad political call.
Jesus calmly told those who weren't sinners themselves to chuck the first stone. Embarrassed by this unexpected turn of events, the scribes and Pharisees slunk off to find a dog to kick.
Wimps. I would have clobbered the woman in the head two seconds after hearing the ground rules. I may not be perfect, but I am righteous enough to teach an adulterous tramp a lesson.
That's how I used to think, back when exercising my faith consisted largely of identifying who needed an emotional stoning - in short, anyone who didn't see things exactly the way God and I did.
Then one day years ago, in the middle of ''stoning'' someone with a problem that wasn't really much of a problem - and certainly none of my business - the Holy Spirit whispered to me.
Actually, the Spirit yelled. I can't tell you precisely what it said, because it's personal and not very nice. Essentially, the Spirit told me to lay off. And that I was a moron.
Don't get a big head. The Spirit said you're one, too.
Killing people with rocks is what groups once did to enforce religious norms. It was a way of getting rid of people who were noticeably ''bad'' and controlling those who might be thinking about it.
Back then, people found themselves in lopsided rock fights for adultery, heresy, keeping their foreskins, consorting with pigs and watching MTV. Stuff like that.
The beauty of stoning is that it works. Stone enough people to death and eventually you can pretend that whatever you were stoning them for is no longer a problem. The survivors are all hiding.
Unfortunately it creates an artificial environment where you don't have to deal with those problems until they pop up right next to you in the form of someone you care about. And it's too late.
We don't use real rocks anymore, but we still stone people. We clobber them with arrogance, bigotry, fear and hate, then finish them off with indifference. The survivors limp off to bother others.
The irony when religious congregations do this is that they drive off the very people they're commanded to love and tolerate.

===========
It could have been an interesting topic to discuss.
To understand how differently liberal women think about it compared to conservative women. COULD have been.
Myself...I think it's wonderful that they've developed this vaccine....but I do have concerns about what side effects it might have down the road. I always have concerns about any new medicines/vaccines UNTIL they've been able to make evaluations 10 years later.
AND another problem I have with this is the liberals who are trying to FORCE ALL young girls to take the shot.
Just more gov. intrusion into our personal lives.
They should have the CHOICE of whether or not they want to be given the vaccine.....they should NEVER make it a REQUIRED - you will do it or ELSE - drug.

I DO want all young women who WANT to receive the vaccine to have it.
I do NOT want a communist nation where the gov. FORCES it on those who don't want to take it. We're NOT living in China yet.
But if the progressive liberals have their way, we may soon be told how many childre we're allowed to have....etc...etc...etc.
So far the conservatives have been able to keep that from happening. And I'm REAL glad about that.

Are you referring to the Catholic faith now?
No one FORCES anyone to have children.
But most/many progressive liberals/socialists/communists DO support the murder of millions of helpless babies.
That's NOT moral to me.
Yet it is to you....
...as I said, "different strokes for different folks".

More "government intrusion" from just New York:
Vaccines are among the 20th century's most successful and cost-effective public health tools for preventing disease and death. Thanks to immunizations, diseases like polio that were once common, are now only distant memories for most Americans. Today, there are few visible reminders of the suffering, injuries, and deaths caused by diseases that are now prevented with vaccines. At present, there are vaccines available to protect children and adults against at least fifteen (15) life-threatening or crippling diseases.
Immunizations are for people of all ages. From newborns to senior citizens, timely immunizations are one of the most important ways for people to protect themselves and others from serious diseases. Adults need to make certain they have received all of their childhood vaccinations and stay up-to-date with the vaccinations that are recommended for adults. All college students attending school in New York State are required to be immunized against measles, mumps and rubella. It is also recommended that first year college students living in dormitories be immunized against meningitis. Travelers to foreign countries may need additional vaccines where diseases exist that are not common in the U.S., such as typhoid fever and yellow fever.""

From the Mayo Clinic:
What are the legal requirements for immunizing children? How do you find out about your own state's regulations?
Each state has its own immunization requirements that must be met before your child can enter school. You may need proof — such as an immunization record obtained from your doctor's office — at the time of school registration. Your local school system can inform you about relevant state laws. Most states have religious-exception clauses if your faith prohibits immunization.

Yep....that's why we have thousands of LAWS that won't allow burglars just to enter homes and steal what they want.
So that murders will pay a price when they murder others.
So that we will take care of our poor and helpless.
Thousands of LAWS so the gov. of ANY structured society can maintain 'a peaceful co-existence'.

Nope....I disagree about anyone forcing them. They had the CHOICE and FULL decisions making power when they got pregnant. NO one forced them to be irresponsible and NOT keep from getting pregnant....as millions and millions of American women did BEFORE roe vs wade.

WHO IS LIVING in UTOPIA ???
YOU! Just because sex is so foreign to YOU dosen't mean ALL women are as inhuman.....they are HUMAN, HUMANS make mistakes...even YOU linduh can't change humans....just because you're not one.
And like all conservatives you USE the abortion issue to further your agenda....but don't give a damn about the children AFTER they're born....

You know, I seriously DO think you're insane.
I have NEVER seen anyone who can post so much about what others think/feel/hold opinions on than YOU.
Do you EVER just speak for yourself...rather than what YOU think I think? Sure never appears that way.
The subject is a VACCINE.....and whether people agree or not that our gov. has the RIGHT to FORCE ALL to have it.
Imo, they shouldn't. The cancer issue should be discussed real well with ALL young women....so they can make the CHOICE about what THEY want to do. Not allow the gov. to decide that PERSONAL - and possibly health altering for them.
Especially WHEN it's a NEW drug and we have NO IDEA what it's long term consequences are going to be....if any.
I've always felt that MOST liberals want CHOICE for ONLY one issue....abortion.
Other than that - they often argue AGAINST personal. individual CHOICES. tsk tsk tsk

I guess my concern is that all those girls who aren't vaccinated will need intensive medical help at some point if and when they develop uterine cancer. And many of them won't be able to afford the medical care, so taxpayers will pick up the tab.
There are many potential illnesses, as shown in a message above, for which children HAVE TO be vaccinated before they're allowed in school.
And, Linda, HPV is truly contagious! Spread by sexual contact.
Now, what about a girl who's opted out of the HPV vaccine and later has sexual contact through rape, then develops the cancer? I think parents who don't like the idea, "knowing " (LOL) that their daughter will remain pure until marriage, should consider other possibilities.
And when a woman is married, even if a virgin until then, we have to assume there will be sexual contact, right?
Many ways for a "good" girl to contract this disease.

So what happens if down the road some new cancer developes....or they can't get pregnant....or or or.
There are no guarantees about what medical findings from taking this vaccine will be 10 years from now.
AS there have been with many drugs and some other vaccines meant to protect BUT caused more harm to the individual
What you appear to support is taking AWAY CHOICE....taking this OUT of the parent's hands and letting the gov. make those decisions for our children.
Well as I said...it's NOT a communist country YET.
