Is anyone going to a debate party tomorrow? There's one 3 blocks away from me in a neighborhood movie theater/pizza pub.

I'm going to a friend's with pizza tomorrow night to watch the debate. This should be good.

37 million watched the first McCain-Obama debate. I'm betting that even more will watch Thursday night!

Didja hear how scared McCain is? He tried to get the commission that puts on the debates to shorten the answer period to two minutes with NO discussion between the debaters.
I think they turned him down...but what a weak-kneed, cowardly thing to try to do...just to spare his hot house flower any embarassment!!!!

Mingo! "didja"?? You ARE talking Minnesotan! Last I read, McCain got his way:

At the insistence of the McCain campaign, the Oct. 2 debate between the Republican nominee for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, and her Democratic rival, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., will have shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, the advisers said. There will also be much less opportunity for free-wheeling, direct exchanges between the running mates.

negus - The American people should be outraged. What a load of hooey. Let's not upset the delicate flower that is to be a vice president. OMG, like she would ever be ready to be president. Talk about a sexist move.

That's what I think. I guess Obama went along with it so he could have a better shot at McCain in the Presidential debates.

Sitting here thinking and getting angrier over this by the minute. . .if the McCain't camp and her own party can be sexist so the heck can I. She needs to put her apron back on, go back to Alaska and finish the cookies she's got baking for her son's soccer team. She has no business in politics.

I still think 2 minutes should give her ample time to show how stupid she is. If she doesn't, people will blame it on the shortened format and/or that she has been prepped well. I doubt that she will be able to convince anyone that she is ready to lead except those who are already solidly on board the McCain Train.

While she'll still lose the debate and won't change any minds, I think we're all going to be surprised at how well Palin does tonight.

I agree with Profe. She is good at going on the attack, and some people like that in a VP (or President.) She will impress McCain-ites with her style, but I don't think she will change anyone's mind---unless she completely flubs it with some answers. Biden, on the other hand, is somewhat restricted in what he can do. He cannot be too aggressive or McCain will yell sexism. In the meantime, no one has been more sexist in dealing with Palin than the McCain team. From the beginning, they treated her like a dumb broad who needs protection from the big, bad liberals. She has lived up to their opinion of her. Criticism is part of the game, so you better learn to take it. McCain too.

She will probably survive by evading the questions that she can't discuss or answer. And the people who admire McCain's choice of a gun toting, religious woman from a small town will feel victorious for twenty four hours.

In Sarah's vernacular, "Let em have their fun. Oh Yeah!"

Geesh, it takes her more than two minutes to finish her hand gestures.

Someone throw that woman a lifeline!

Too bad it couldn't have been Hillary debating with Palin because the sexism accusations wouldn't be there and they would have been on more even ground, except for Hillary's political and worldly knowledge of course. Yes, Palin will do okay tonight by talking a lot about nothing, perhaps with some sarcasm, and those who support her won't even notice if she evades a question or they'll be quick to make excuses for her. I'm convinced certain brains are wired for types such as Palin and Bush and the qualities they like in them are the same ones others don't like.

I heard this morning that the two debaters will not be allowed to answer to each other, only to the moderator. I think that will give Biden a bit more leeway to attack (although gently, for this delicate flower).

Even in debates at the city council level, we were allowed to address each other (and lordy were there attacks!).

The McCain camp is already getting an excuse ready with Gwen Ifill's book “The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama,” which is scheduled to debut on Inauguration Day. She has not even written the chapter on Obama yet, she says. The book is about African-Americans and politics, not Obama in particular. You could hardly write a book about black politicians and not include Obama.

The conservative pundits have already called her biased and want her recused from moderating. If Palin screws up, they have an excuse at the ready.

coach - That doesn't surprise me in the least. I'm really surprised that they haven't worked Bill Clinton into the whole equation yet. They're so good at it. They just need to admit they have an idiot sitting in the white house and are eager to put an even bigger idiot in his place.

Edited to add: Just a thought. There may be a method to their madness. With idiots in the white house, a republican controlled house and senate could get away with just about anything.

If McCain "wins", Cheney will still be running the show. Rove has never really left and of course, Palin will be an energetic and adoring student of that pair.
