I've been lurking here at AW for quite a while. I never felt the need to post until I read thread after thread on the current election problems.

Let me get this out of the way right at the beginning. I am a 29 year old republican. Many of my views are conservative but I do not agree with many of the traditional republican ideals. I've never voted a straight ticket.

This election year I was not thrilled with the choices to say the least. I'm sure many feel this way. I wouldn't vote for Al Gore for the simple fact I do not think he has what it takes to run our great country. Now here is the problem. I do not like or trust George Bush Jr. He is not the man for the job. Before the process of this election began, I was unsure of him. Since the election has become a tangle of lies, deceit and ridiculous posturing, I am positive he will be bad for the country as a whole.

This is no time to just stick with your party affiliation just because you were, are, always will be a republican or democrat. Which brings me to the point of this thread.

I feel it is time to step back and take a look at which candidate will do the least damage to the country as a whole. I still don't like Al Gore, I probably never will but I can tell you right now, he, at the very least, doesn't scare me. I am truly frightened of what Mr. Bush will do if he makes the White House.

I almost feel like a traitor here, as a registered republican. I have taken heat here at home for stating my opinions and fears, but I tell you, this really scares me. I just can't ignore the facts anymore purely for the sake of partisanship.

We need to unite as a country and heal the wounds this election debacle has created and will continue to create.

What a mature way of approaching this--you should be President!!----but if anyone gives you any grief on this thread---my friend below will take care of them--I'll toast their tushes and crunch their bones.

On Monday---Canada goes to the polls--and we have 5!!! major political parties !!! though the race will really be between the imcumbent Liberal leader, Jean Chretin and the ultra right wing leader of the Canadian Alliance, Stockwell Day.

TTH, Great post and I agree with you. I also vote for the person I think would do the better job. I can't remember ever voting a stright ticket.

Bush has scared me from the beginning (as did his father). I just had this gut feeling of distrust for the man. The things that have gone on in the last week have validated that feeling.

I'm still pretty sure he will end up in the White House, but I don't feel he will be as able to manipulate things now. He will be a lame duck President and watched very carefully.

Zazzie: Can I borrow your friend to crunch the bones of the thief who took my daughter's scooter tonight?
TTH: I'm also a registered Republican who looked at the choices, and voted for Gore. No flames here yet.

wow I heard those scooters are a real hot thing, a riot somewhere, I watched on the news, when some store had 75 and they reported them being sold in 90 seconds! Thats awful someone stole it!

I am a registered Republican, and I did vote for Bush. I read a lot about the man, his stand on issues etc. His biography, not the media one, is very interesting, and he is portrayed by the media a little different than what I read.

But, I do believe now that Gore will win this election. He's gaining on this hand count. If he does, I am not a Republican to rally or protest. Whoever is the President, will be my President, and should have respect by the people.

TTH: I understand your position. Very brave of you to admit it here but hold your ground.
My family has voted democratic for years. I took so much flack way back when I said that Johnson scared me.
I really don't think anyone who believes that everyone in thier party of choice thinks exactly like they do is really thinking at all.
Bush scares the heck out of me too. but I bet we are going to be stuck with him.

I think the time to do that was a bit over 2 weeks ago...or are you suggesting that, post-election, we now throw out all the votes and come up with some new system?

Hi, TTH! I'm in the next boat...registered as a Libertarian, voted for Gore, for a lot of reasons--including that Gore was the "better" (in my opinion) of the two truly viable candidates, as well as my acute memory contrast of the state of the economy and the country's general health under the administration of George Bush vs. the Democratic administration of the last 8 years.

Very little about George W. Bush actually "scares" me, but I do not feel that he has the intelligence, breadth and depth of experience, and the leadership capabilities to succeed (as I would hope and expect) as our country's President (just as his father did not). And truthfully, the prospect of living for 20 or 30 more years with the tenor of the US Supreme Court (if it should contain up to the four appointees from the next administration, as predicted) DOES concern me.

So, I hope that Gore will emerge from this as our next president. And I hope that, four years from now, our choices will be among better candidates. Both are crippled now in their ability to govern effectively. Let us pray for a speedy and nondestructive outcome of the next four years.

Not at all, I don't suggest we start anew on this election. The only thing that would do is cause more problems. What I am suggesting is everyone take a look, a real look at what is in store for us due to the election problems and learn from the mistakes. I am only suggesting that people who side with a particular party regardless of the facts step back and remember this the next time they decide to vote for someone just because they happen to belong to the particular political party they are registered as.

I really was just stating my opinions, I don't have all the answers and never will.

With that clarification, [b]tth[/bv], I'm with you entirely.

(And let me say how refreshing it is to find a fellow Republican on the board who isn't resorting to shrilly demonizing anybody who doesn't belong to The Club...)

Thanks TTH, for starting a non-partisan partisan thread LOL.
I must admit that (being un-affiliated with either main party) I started out finding this whole situation sadly funny. Now however with the bantering of the Hate-mongers (Rush & company) and the Spin-doctors (Jesse & company) I am beginning to feel very uncomfortable about where this mess is headed. The venom which is being spouted is embarassing to say the least. You are correct in saying now is the time for this country to unite and not deteriorate any further into this political maelstrom.
Just the view from my back porch
