When I try to print I keep getting an error message saying there is a problem with the LPT1 port writing to the printer. So I have reinstalled the drivers, amongst lots of other things, to attempt to fix the problem. Now, when I go into device manager, the LPT1 port isn't even listed anymore. When I restart Windows it doesn't recognize the port. How do I get it to recognize the port, or is the port itself faulty, is there a way for me to check the port, etc. Thanks for any help! I sure need it!

Keciaarm - I don't know that answer, but what I would do is call the printer company, I do that when I have a printer problem. They can usually give suggestions & help right over the phone. Someone here on the board will probably know too, so I'll pop this back up to the top.
Good luck!

Sounds like your printer is not compatible with your computer. It seemed to have blown out one of your drivers. You may need to get a fix to reinstall your parallel port. Try reinstalling Windows and it should reinstall the port.{You won't loose anything as it just overwrites any of your old files} Then call the printer Company and tell them what is wrong. You may need a printer that is more compatible. Good Luck Zelda

What kind of computer do you have and what kind of printer? My new printer tells me when the ink is low, the old one just said I didn't have a printer or a port. I'm no expert and the first time it happened it really shook me up.

Post some details. What type of computer, ie, processor, memory, what OS (Win95 or 98).

Which printer, was it working correctly before? Have you recently opened the computer case for anything? Have you recently added any hardware such as a zip drive or scanner?

What happened that started the problem?

Meye thats exactly what happenned to me. I installed a zip drive and it blew out my communication port. I reinstalled windows and it set it back to the default and reinstalled it.

Well here is where I am with this fiasco. The computer and printer where working fine together till yesterday. When I turned on the computer it hung and didn't boot up properly. So I hit the reset button. When Windows did it's scan, it said that it had found an error and had fixed it. It appears that the computer somehow reverted back to sets from a couple of months ago. Several programs didn't work properly and settings from a couple of months ago reappeared. So I have corrected everything but the printer issue. My computer doesn't recognize that it has a LPT1 port AT ALL! It won't recognize it (not listed in device manager)and when I try to get it to search for it, Windows doesn't find it. I reinstalled Windows but that didn't help any. So I have two questions for you helpful folks 1. Is there a diagnostic program that I could download off the internet that could check the port? 2. Would it fix the problem if I wipe the hard drive clean, reformat and start from scratch? That is a lot of work but I have done it several times over the years and am comfortable with that. I just don't want to go through all that trouble and it still not work properly. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

I wouldn't reformat until you verify the problem. It could be a blown lpt port. They are easily replaced, and you can buy one at your local Best Buy. It would be a parallel port card. If that is the problem, a reload or reformat won't help.

I agree with Meya but yes, reformating will clean up the mess if reinstalling windows did nothing-----It depends how much you have on your hard drive. If you do not have too much then reformatting would be the best way to start fresh. Try Meya's first-----Also Best Buy will fix it for a fee and install it for you if you cannot do yourself---

Thanks for the help everyone! I will go tomorrow and buy a new port. I think that is the easist place to start. What do I need to know besides I need a LPT1 printer port? And will it come with an installation disc or do you just put it in and the computer will recognize it?
Thanks again.

It will probably come with a disk, but most likely Windows will see it. What version of Windows are you running? Win95, 98, or 98se, or ME? I'm sure there will be instructions too. Good luck and post back after you install it.
