Does anybody know when napster is shutting down? IS there any other websites like napster?

It is not certain that Napster is shutting down. The court order did not say they had to close, only prohibit the transfer of copyrighted songs. They may create a database of song titles that the servers will filter out. If you can not see them you can not copy. Of course that will just lead to some creativity on the part of the users such as changing the name of a song but making it identifiable. There are also other packages like Napster (Cutemx, gnutella). They try to make it harder but we just get more resourcefull.

You could also subscribe to Napster's newsletter. That should keep you informed on the latest events.

It will continue on while the appeals are going on. I'm downloading like crazy at the moment, But if they do have to start charging per month, I will probably continue on with them becasue I find stuff there that just isn't available otherwise.

Napster itself has a newletter you can subscribe to (go to www.napster.com).

Also, you might try reading the Napster newsgroup to get urls for similar sites -- although I haven't seen one of them that is anywhere near Napster is usefulness or ease of use. alt.music.mp3.napster is the name of the NG.

Download napigator. This is a Napster add-on that uses the Napster software, but non-Napster servers that aren't hosted in the U.S. There are currently about 700 servers, as opposed to Napster's 100+. Napster is nothing more than a software application that will work whether or not Napster Inc. exists as a company.

imesh.com

It's like Napster, only you can get a lot more than music files. You can get programs, mpegs, jpegs, mp3's, you name it - whatever anyone connected to it wants to make available from their computer.

Oh, James...

I'd be grateful if you'd explain how these sites work...and if they're safe to use. Are you opening up your entire computer when you share these files?

I just don't understand how this stuff works... Does the new site you linked work the same way, and as well as, Napster? I love the idea of getting away from the U.S. court system...

Regardless of my ignorance, I've been downloading like mad from Napster...and loving it! I cannot believe I waited so long to try it. I found versions of St. James Infirmary I didn't know existed

And then there's my honest, law abiding 79 year old neighbor. Doesn't own a computer and has no idea why anyone would want one. She read about "That Napster Thing" in the newspapers. Thought it was terrible everyone was "stealing" music. I was showing her how it worked and she saw all the Frank Sinatra on there. She would never ask me to do anything illegal of course, but just "borrowing" a little Frank Sinatra music can't be against the law.

Toke, it is exactly the same as Naspter. Running it is very intuitive.

Basically, Napster is a software application that enables you to access only one folder on other people's hard drives through a common server that you both connect to. What I linked to, Napigator, is an add-on that works with the Napster software. In concept it is exactly the same, the only difference being that you can choose to connect to any one of many other servers, none of which are on U.S. soil or affiliated with Napster the company. It's not necessary to use Napigator as of now, as Napster is still up and running (and free). But it's worthwhile to download Napigator in anticipation of that dark day that is coming.

I saw a small news blip about this the other day. Did they say this kid was only 18 years old when he started Napster? Blows my mind!

JamesOThat's the honest to God truth. But, I can't imagine an 18 year old putting it all together and forming a multi-million dollar company. He must be a genius?

edited cause I can't even spell genius! LOL

I heard a radio interview with him six or eight months ago. Yep, that's about the age he was. And he sounds like a remarkably well grounded guy, not "believing his own press", not self-important.

Belgian police have been raiding the homes of suspected Napster users since December 2000, the Belgian authorities admit Friday.

Thank you, James... That Belgian police operation is scary, huh? I can't believe they can do that.

What is the difference between downloading songs off Napster for my listening pleasure and recording songs off the radio for my listening pleasure?

The record companies made more money last year in sales than the movie industry did. And they say Napster is hurting them. Whatever! All I know is I am a downloading fool until I can't any longer. And I won't pay to use it either. No thanks!

I think that Napster and similar programs actually increase cd sales. I may download say Nina Gordon's entire cd, for playback in my lousy '85 Astro's stereo with crackly speakers. But, since I want to also listen to her on my good home stereo with Bose speakers etc, I am going to go out and buy the cd. While the quality of most MP3's is fair, it's not excellent. I don't miss the quality on my van system, but I do on my good system.

I imagine that many music lovers feel the same way.
