My dog Cleo is losing her mind. We had visiters this week from out of town. My husbands niece brought her four month old baby.Everytime she cried Cleo would go nuts at first we thought the noise was bothering her but then she got wierd.
While they were still here she started carrying around her stuffed snowman like it was a baby , she even tries to get it to nurse. Each day she adds a new stuff toy to her "Litter".
She is now the pround "Momma" of a snowman, a purple bird and a stuffed dog. She goes nowhere without them.
Any suggestions on how to ease her out of this mess.
Could the scent of the baby nursing or it's cries have triggered something inside her or is she just crazy?
I was going to take a picture of her and her "litter" to show you but it is just to pittiful.

I don't have any suggestions, but that is so cute. Well maybe one. If she wants to be a momma to them let her. If it makes her feel better, why not?

Oh....Bless her little heart! That just makes me cry. And sort of laugh, but mostly cry. Hope she is ok! I think I'd give her lots of extra attention to help her get through that.

Our dog has not been spayed and after she goes into heat, she does the exact same thing. She will get a pile of stuffed animals and make a 'den' under my husband's desk. She licks them and mothers them and although I've never seen her try to get them to nurse, she probably does.
I pick them up and put them back in the bedroom, and she will patiently go and bring every single one back out. It is always the same ones every time. She gets over it after a week or so. But it is really weird.

I understand your dog perfectly, crying babies hurt my ears too!

You dog sounds very sweet! Please do post pictures. It would make my day!

My guess is that sweet Cleo is jealous of the new baby. As you probably know animals can be very sensitive to what is going on around them. Give her love, love and more love followed by huge doses of attention. She probably feels that with a baby there getting all sorts of unwarrented attention you silly humans have forgotten about her.

Is Cleo an only "child?" I bet once the invading humans have left "her" home that she will probably settle down after a while.

good luck

I had a little dachshund mix who was spayed. She kept trying to take our cats kittens. She would wait for the cat to leave them, then snatch one and carry it off to wash and cuddle it. Mama would find them and take her kitten back. This went on until the kittens were big enough to escape on their own. We bought a guinea pig and that became her new "baby". The dog was happy and the guinea pig seemed to enjoy being fussed over. They had many happy years together.

HiTegan I'd love to see the pic! It sounds like she wants to be a momma, doesn't it? I think December has a great idea... just get her a little one to take care of.

We've got a little yorkie mix and they do seem to be hypersensitive to everything.

Not paranoid anywhere else but here!

Muriel your little baby looks just like our SuzyQ. She is also a black and tan mini. Yours is adoarable. If I can ever figure out how to put pictures on here, I will find one of her so you can see her.

That's our infamous Lauren. She has been having problems like Tegan's dog (some of you will recall from an earlier thread). We have to make a decision soon whether to have her spade (at the ripe old age of 12) or have her put down. We can't let her keep going through these periods of crying, digging at the carpet, shivering, etc. She just went through her second round of hormone pills and the vet says "no more". So now we have to weigh our options.

I'd just let her keep them, as her security blanket. it's not hurting anything, and she'll probably get over it.

Our cocker stole the cat's kittens, also. The entire litter, and every time we gave them back to the cat, she stole them again. She curled up with them in her house and was very proud of them! We finally had to put the cats in the garage where she couldn't get to them.
