Why are we naming a ship after former President Reagan?

I didn't like it when the airport was named after him now this?

Autographed pics of Ronnie are a dime a dozen.

I salute my autographed pic of Ronnie too.

The naming of naval ships is at the discretion of the Congress. The authorization of a new vessel and the naming are usually, but not always concurrent.

Presidents have long been honored by having ships named after them.

FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy have all had Supercarriers (75,000+ tons) named after them. At his request, Jimmy Carter has a submarine rather than a carrier named after him - his Naval career was as a Submariner.

In time, I suspect we will see both a USS George W. Bush and a USS William Jefferson Clinton. It is an honor that comes with honorably fulfilling service in the office of President.

While there may be a political component to the process, it is not absolute and most of all is not a popularity contest.
If it were, Reagan would deserve a fleet- he
won 44 states against an incumbent (Carter) and 49 states against a challenger (Mondale).

You are certainly entitled to your opinion which is certainly a reflection of your political views - but you're a bit late to #*!@ about it; the ship was authorized in 1994 and the keel was laid in 1998.

As the home of capitalism we should auction of the rights to name the boats like schools do with buildings and chairs.
Put up 50 million and you get the USS William Gates. A million here a million there....
We had a very unpopular President at the university where my wife works named Sandra Packard. She angered everyone by cutting down all the beautiful trees at the entrance of the school because they hide the buildings
(ugly 60's architecture ) from view.
When she came back as a regular professor later I ordered a big aluminum plaque cast that said "Sandra Packard Memorial Dumpster"
and was going to sneak in at night and put it on the brick wall around the dumpsters at the Student Center, but my wife found the order to the casting company and threw a fit.
Sounded funny to me.....

Since I don't care for Kemp and the show was the dedication USS Ronnie Reagan, I listened a bit and turned it. Didn't get the details.

There was no small amount of snickering in these parts when that massive federal office building was named after Mr. Ray-gunzz, considering his propensity for slashing personnel to the point where they couldn't possibly fulfill their missions.

The only people who refer to National Airport as Reagan Airport haven't missed an afternoon of Limbaugh in at least a decade.

BTW

Now Hilliary is being called "Slick Hillie"

Do tell me: If Willie is slang for .... what is Hillie slang for?

As far as I am concerned (I don't know about others) there isn't any lines drawn in the sand in this here thread unless a few other AW posters pays us a visit.

I lean towards the Democratic Party but...believe in fairness and will vote for Republicans if the person is better qualified.

Who was it about a decade ago that was a democrat, belonged to another party and joined the Democrats but they wouldn't have anything to do with him? Seems like he was located in the midwest. Can't think of his name. Anyone?

Anyways whoever that was just because he was a democrat.....

EDITED because I haven't had my 2nd cup of java!

EDITED working on my 2nd cup!

Did anyone watch the dedication yesterday?
Although I never voted for Reagan, and never really cared for Nancy I was really touched by her speech. You could see how much she still loves him.

Lol No lines drawn and probably better that way. I am a hard core republican though I do have some issues right now first and foremost hoping Bush leaves the Alaska wildlife area alone. I have had my issues with environmentalists in the past but in this case I agree with them. As a animal lover, I don't believe that oil is worth the risk and got up my political activist nerve to write him a letter and tell him so! Lol I am sure it made its way to the executive paper shredder but hey! Lol. As to Nany Reagan, some people called her corny and did not agree with everything she did or said but the one thing you cannot question about her is her honesty. Something that has been missing in the last 8 years. Think back how Ronald and Nancy worked together in the White house (even if you did not like their politics) compared to the shame that willie and hilly brought recently. I feel sorry for their daughter.

Nancy is his primary caregiver along with their medical assistants.

My Dad had alzheimers passed away about a decade ago. My Mother was his primary caregiver. In his advanced stages she was the only one he allowed to help him. However, it got to a point while she would dress him, he would make a comment if it was proper for her to see him undress...didn't recognize her thought she was a stranger.

A few years ago I can't remember what event it was but Nancy talked about Ronnie as if he was his jolly self (he was absent in the event). I turned to my Mother and said "He has alzheimers how 'normal' can he be?" meaning that -in my opinion- she was either portraying the image or in denile of his condition.

It would have been a wonderful opportunity for education on alzheimer's affects on a person.

I never voted for Reagan. Voted Democrat both times.

Well if Nixon got a coal barge, what does that leave for Clinton, a garbage scow?
