If you're trying to get measurements from the bullet point you'll go crazy. They're seldom consistent and can vary as much as .015" within a lot of bullets.
Make the next thing you buy be a bullet comparator. It measures at the ogive, which is what contacts the rifling. The Sinclair $6.00 many caliber nut will work ok, but the hot setup is the one that mounts on a dial caliper.
I just make a dummy round with pretty low tension and chamber it. Take it out and measure it then start moving the seater down. Generally I put them where they just don't touch the rifling anymore, measure that, then use that measurement for any bullet.
Another good thing is the Davidson bullet puller. It's for uncrimped low to medium tensioned bullets, but it pulls them without damage.
