I'm sure this has been seen by a lot of you, but always fun to read it again.
..................................

Close your eyes...And go back in time...
Before the Internet or the MAC,

Before semi-automatics and crac

Before SEGA or Nintendo...Way back...

I'm talking about hide and seek at dusk.

The Good Humor man, Red light, green light.

The corner store.

Hopscotch, butterscotch, doubledutch, jacks, kickball, dodgeball.

Mother May I? Red Rover and Roly Hula Hoops

Running through the sprinkler

The smell of the sun and licking salty lips...

Wax lips and mustaches

An ice cream cone on a warm summer night

Chocolate or vanilla or strawberry or maybe butter pecan.

A cherry coke from the fountain at the corner drug store

Wait...

Watching Saturday Morning cartoons....short commercials

Fat Albert, Road Runner, He-Man, The Three Stooges, and Bugs Bunny

Or staying up for Gunsmoke

Or back further, listening to Superman on the radio

When around the corner seemed far away.

And going downtown seemed like going somewhere.

A million mosquito bites. Sticky fingers.

Cops and Robbers, Cowboys and Indians, Zorro.

Climbing trees, building igloos out of snow banks

Walking to school, no matter what the weather.

Running till you were out of breath.

Laughing so hard your stomach hurt....

Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights

Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.

Being tired of playing Remember that?

The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.

War was a card game.

Water balloons were the ultimate weapon.

Baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle.

I'm not just finished yet...

Remember when....

There were two types of sneakers for girls and boys (Keds & PF Flyers)
and the only time you wore them was for "gym".

It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends.

When nobody owned a purebred dog.

When a quarter was a decent allowance, and another quarter a miracle.

When milk went up one cent and everyone talked about it for weeks?

When you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny.

When you got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped,

Without asking, for free, everytime. And, And you didn't pay for air.

And, you got trading stamps to boot!

When laundry detergent had free glasses, dish towels hidden inside the box.

When nearly everyone's Mom was at home when the kids got there.

When it took five minutes for the TV to warm up, if you even had one.

When your Mom wore nylons what came in two pieces.

It was magic when Dad would "remove" his thumb.

When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents.

When girls neither dated nor kissed until late high school, if then.

When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or use him to carry groceries, and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing about it.

When they threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed...and did!

When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a mis behaving student at home.

Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much
bigger threat! and some of us are still afraid of them!!!

Didn't that feel good....just to go back and say,

Yeah, I remember that!

Remember when....

Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-mo".

Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "do over"!

"Race issues" meant arguing about who ran the fastest.

Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker
in "Monopoly".

The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was cooties.

It was unbelievable that dodgeball wasn't an Olympic event.

Having a weapon in school, meant being caught with a slingshot.

Nobody was prettier than Mom.

Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.

Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin.

Ice cream was considered a basic food group.

Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true.

Abilities were discovered because of a "double-dog-dare".

Older siblings were the most tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors.

If you can remember most of all of these, then you have LIVED!!!!

Pass this on to anyone who may need a break from their "grown-up" life......

Do I ever remember spending many a summer night playing hide and go seek in the neighborhood. We also had some fantastic water balloon fights. Also, spent many a summer day collecting coke bottles just to get the newest comic book.

doxdogy that memory about saving coke bottles, oh yes I remember that one. But did you ever have to sneak around the back of the shop and get an extra bottle because you would be 5 cents short and couldn't wait to get an extra bottle from somewhere legit. LOL

I also remember skating down the green
slimed gutters in your bare feet.
When Western Wagon Wheels were huge!!
When Mum used to buy her fruit & veg from
a cart.
The smell of hot bread from the van.
Finding sixpenses in the Plum pudding.
When you thought you could get pregnant
by just kissing.
When you had ONE special pair of shoes for
going out in - and a lovely hat, that tied
up under the chin.

Kazanne remember that stupid advertisment for the wagon wheels. That lizard thing that used to say 'No not the wagon wheels, No No not the wagon wheels' I am still not sure what he meant, well I sort of do but it was a stupid ad. LOL

The hats, we used to call them potty hats because that is what they were shaped like.
They were all lacy and frilly and worn to sunday school, church and weddings. Oh yes lest us not forget the hat. LOL

Another thing I just remembered is "Witches Britches" We were very daring little girls back then and it was cheeky to show a bit of lace on the leg line, now cheeky has a whole new meaning.

God, Netta - I remember now that they WERE called Potty hats, and the Witches Britches
It's funny that when you are reminded of all
these things, you remember more.
Can't remember the Wagon Wheel ad though.
I think Sunday School is a thing of the
past these days - we all used to go.
And going to Mc and East in the city, was
a huge and exciting day out for us - we'd
dress up to the nines.

I remember my sisters & brother & cousins & I lying on the lawn making up 8 identical lists and alloting a block in the neighborhood to each kid and playing 'Scavenger Hunt'. (if you never played, your lists had ordinary but quirky things and whoever begged the entire list off the neighbors first was the winner! There wasn't even a prize. You were just the winner! A couple items I remember clearly being on our lists; a seashell (any size), colored glass (any kind, broken or whole), a wooden spoon. Can't think of any others right now. I remember once a lady handing me her wooden cooking spoon.... I'm sure as kids we had in mind the little wooden spoons that came inside of icecream bars. She said, "please be sure to bring this back." I was so proud that she trusted me to bring it back.

Speaking of icecream! Remember the taste of 'Fudgescicles'? WOW! that was the best stuff! I still get 'em once in awhile, but the magic is dim. Did your crowd call them 'Fudgescicles' or 'Fudgeicals'? I remember running into some foreign kids (east coast) who called them that weird second name! (shudder!)

Mom, you are always 16 inside!

Good lord Kaz I almost forgot about Mc and East. I loved going there we always got a treat.

I think lightning bugs are like our fire flies, not 100% sure though.

We chased lightning bugs (same as fireflies) at dusk & played flashlight tag, on the hot summer nights...
I rode my stringray bike, with the banana seat & the groovy orange flag pole...
Mom made "colored ice cubes" outta kool-aid
Sometime we drank "fizzies"
We ALWAYS wore white gloves to church
& got a special new spring coat & hat for easter!...
The remote for the TV was ME! (the youngest who had to actually get up and goto the TV)
We begged and begged to sleep out in the back yard, and ran inside when we heard the first little noise....
Summer officially began when you got your new pair of flip-flops
"Get on line" was what we did when the second bell rang at recess...

Thanx for the wonderful, warm memories....

justjoan:Thank you, though the weapon of choice when I went to school was a pea-shooter.

And water ballons with FOOD COLORING were the ULTIMATE WAPONS!!

Glad this has given a lot of you some happy memories, which are the best of kinds right.
I think lightening bugs or flies were probably the same, and of course always let go in the end.
Any body know what a Chigger is ? Only in Texas we found those cuties. As a kid had to have shoes and socks and feet powdered or we ended up being chiggered to death, it was the grounds answer to a mosquito.
While we are remembering, I can remember standing in LINE for Double Bubble chewing gum, came in the tube like shape, and oh the taste can still be remembered. War years time.
