How many of these things can you remember?
1. The name of the mouse that Red Skelton used to talk to, on his tv show?
2. What did the Maine fisherman in a yellow slicker and hat advertise?
3. Who was Matt Dillon's first sidekick-name on the show, real name?
4. Who was Rowdy Yates?
5. What was the first POPULAR tv show broadcast regularly in color? (Our preacher had to change the time for Sunday evening church services because of this show)

You're right-it was Ed. But remember, Red skelton just did imitations of Gertrude and Heathcliff, they weren't puppets. He'd tuck his hands under his armpits and make wings, and had a voice for each one-sure do miss him!

You got that one right, Linda-he was my first major crush, back when he had hair! Still like him, even bald, though...

Chester was played by Dennis Weaver. A young Burt Reynolds was on Gunsmoke too...played the black smith if I remember right.
Fisherman in the yellow slicker....was that the Gorton's Fisheman...for fish sticks?

Did any of you folks have "locally" produced TV shows too back then ?
We got several from the Cincinnati area- Ruth Lyons 50/50 Club, The Paul Dixon Show, Midwestern Hayride, Uncle Ori sp? Show, Uncle Al and Captain Wendy, Hattie the Witch, Skipper Ryle, as well as a host of different childrens shows. Oh- and Bob Shreves sp? Shoenling (beer) All Night Theatre.

I thought Jack Palance was in the show called "Paladin." I could be wrong, though. The westerns were all on waaay after my bedtime in those days.
Our locally produced shows were great! Bandstand, "Uncle Pete" Boyle (father of actor Peter Boyle), Sally Starr, Gene London, Little Red School House, Happy the Clown, Pixanne, and Chief Halftown are some of the ones I remember. And Bertie the Bunyip and Tottle, both puppet shows. (Tottle was the first children's show I ever saw on PBS.)
Bandstand went national, of course. (Nobody here calls it "American Bandstand." Sally's well into her 70s now, and still draws crowds at personal appearances, even though she's been off the air for around thirty years. Gene London is doing something in the fashion industry in NYC.
The others are long gone, except for Chief Halftown. But his show is nothing like what it used to be.

Steve McQueen was the star on Wanted Dead or Alive. Richard Boone is right for Palidan on Have Gun Will Travel...that's what his business card said. Will Hutchens (maybe??) star of Sugarfoot. Did anyone watch the old cowboy movies...Tom Mix, Bob Steele, Hoot Gibson? We had a local channel that showed these old cowboy movies.

Richard Boone was Palladin-the show and his card both said 'Have Gun, Will Travel', and had a chess piece on his card also, a knight, I think.
The first popular show broadcast in color was also a western-at least where I lived.
Do you remember the name of Elsie the cow's children?

You're right about the Hamm's bear...but remember the Jax Beer commercials? My favorite was the frog who told the bartender that if he gave him a beer, he'd turn into a handsome prince. Of course nothing happened when he drank the beer, and the bartender called him a 'stupid frog'. The frog's response was 'Who's stupid? I got my beer, didn't I?'
The fact that I remember this junk probably just proves that I'm a baby boomer in the early stages of 'middleheimers'!

bearmom - Was that 1st colored tv western on Sunday nights, Bonanza?
While doing a search for some of the western tv shows and what their show and real names were, I came across this wonderful 50s site. Don't click here until you want to view all the old tv westerns, who the stars were, what years the tv shows ran, some of the theme songs, etc
