Anytime I see a hypnosis novelty act ( in my neck of the woods some years ago there was a very busy stage hypnotist who advertised himself as the "R-rated Hypnotist" ) I can't help but think the folks up on stage making idiots of themselves must be faking it.
Has anyone here been hypnotized as part of one of those shows? Is it real? Is it fake? Please provide some interesting answers, as I wouldn't want people reading this thread to find themselves getting sleepy, sleeepy ...

I was hypnotized once. I was totally aware of what was going on around me (like when you're half awake and half asleep), but regardless, when the hypnotist told me that my eyes were glued shut and I couldn't open them, I really COULD NOT open them. It was more like being too sleepy to open them. But until he took that suggestion away, I couldn't open my eyes!
My boss just had hypnosis to quit smoking and he did beautifully. Hasn't smoked in five weeks and doesn't even want one.
And I have a brother in law who gets hypnotized when he goes to the dentist rather than getting a shot for pain. This has been going on for 25 years with him.

Well, Spaz both my son and I (2Xs) have been and it made me a believer.
For our son's 21st birthday we took him to Las Vegas and Pat Collins was the headliner. I'd have paid $200.00 for a VHS copy of him up on stage and in the seats after she hynotized him. My husband and I laughed until it hurt.
This son, the most reserved of anyone we've ever known or met, was doing things he'd *never* do, not for any amount of money. If he'd been asked to volunteer to get up on the stage he would have turned down. But there he was, up on stage following all the suggestions Pat made to the seven people she had selected from the audience. After the show was over, he didn't remember much of what he had just done. The show itself was funny, but having someone you know on the stage just put the enjoyment level over the top for us.

I was hypnotized last June 13th. My daughter was pregnant and wanted to quit smoking. Her OB referred her to a hypnotist.
Since she did not want to go alone, I went with her. I had not planned on quitting smoking, I was going for her moral support.
I have not smoked since that session. I was not crabby, have not gained weight. Made quitting the easiest thing to do.
Unfortunately, my daughter has not quit. At least she does not smoke in the house around the baby.

I believe there has to be a volunteer element. She sounds like she was forced to do it too much for it to be effective.

I went to a hynotherapist March 02 of this year to help me stop smoking. I still haven't completely quit but have gone from a 30 year two packs a day habit to having one occasionally... so, I consider it a success. The most noticeable difference has been that it doesn't bother me not to smoke and in fact, I rarely even think about it. The hynotist is upset and thinks that it didn't "take" but she doesn't realize how totally addicted I was.
During the session I was completely aware of everything and it was more like an incredibly deep relaxation. I think it requires a willingness by the participant to accept the suggestions though.

I also went to a stop smoking hypnosis session, while I was there it was great, it felt like I was floating and I could hear what was being said, but it was almost like a dream. I had a back up tape that I was supposed to listen to each night before I went to sleep. For the first couple of days I really believed that it was helping me, but at the end of the week I am sure that I was smoking more than when I first started. LOL
Anyway I have to say that it did not really work for me, but I know other people that it has worked well for. I think it is partly how much you yourself are prepared to accept this thing working for you. Maybe I was not really wanting it to work, so I just would not let my mind accept the thought.
I remember when you had your session Mybid and I remember how you said it made you feel so much better, so for you it obviously helped, which is fantastic.

When I was a YOUNG teenager someone had read or heard how to hypnotize people, so at one of my slumber parties, we hypnotized a girl and COULD NOT get her to come out of it until we put her in my shower and put ice cold water on her for about 5 minutes. We were all crying and really scared! My parents were out for the evening and my Grandmother, who couldn't speak English was watching us, but asleep. We never told anyone and never did it again!!!!
