Does your town have one? Or have you lived somewhere that did? Doesn't have to be a newsworthy event, or something that captured national attention (although it can be). Maybe just the sort of thing that neighbors get all wide-eyed about when they run into each other at the supermarket, or when they're gossiping outside church after Mass ...

One comes to mind from a town in my past:

There was a girl in the public high school who acquired a reputation -- not for being easy, no, no, no. But for her notorious virtue. She never dated, she would depart any conversation the instant someone uttered a vulgarity .. . This girl was so outwardly "wholesome" that she was like a Hollywood parody of a 1950s virgin. Wore big girlish bows in her bouffant-y hair, pink or white angora sweaters .. the only thing missing was the poodle skirt but even though she wore jeans, you could almost see the poodle skirt on some subconscious level, you know what I mean? Her "niceness" gained her such renown that she was even voted Homecoming Queen, edging out other candidates including the most popular cheerleaders (it was so peculiar that many didn't know whether it was a sincere vote or a Carrie-style set-up).

A year or two after graduation (thank God for small mercies, because I dread to think how she would have had to live this down as a student), her father was arrested. He owned and operated one of the local pharmacies. Seems he was caught illegally distributing barbituates and other narcotics to local housewives in exchange for them posing for nude Polaroids and/or sex with him. It was a scandal that lasted about a week as everyone wondered who was in the X-rated photo album that the police confiscated from the pharmacy's back room, where the photo sessions were conducted. We never found out, but there was an even bigger question on everyone's mind -- how was his daughter dealing with what had happened? We never got that answer either. I think she was away at college when it happened and never returned to town.

I always love your stories Spaz

About 20 years ago a small frame home in a near by town blew up from a natural gas explosion and instantly killed the lone occupant... a little old lady. The house was within a few blocks of an old cemetary. I pass it at least once a week. Legend has it that the old lady is often seen - sometimes even in broad day light - wandering between the space where her home once was and her gravesite in the nearby cemetary. After 20 years people still report seeing her to this day... the story (and the lady) that never dies.

Not really a scandal but it's definitely the talk of the town.

Not paranoid anywhere else but here!

Spaz, what if the girl in your story was a current member of AW? Hey, it could happen. then reading about her father's sordid adventures would probably not be permitted.

Yeah, I spend my life worrying about such possibilities.

Wasn't it you that was worried about such a possibility when someone linked here in the RT a month or two ago to the Internet page(s) of a woman's dating rules, that were obsessively detailed, and were required reading in order to make a date with her? or was that not one of your concerns? At that time, I thought you were concerned that she might be a member here. I don't know, perhaps my memory is wrong, I'll try to find the thread later when I take another break from listing.

It seems we can't talk about much else anyway soooo... my comment was slightly tongue-in-cheek.

Thanks for trying, mybiddness.

Naive of me to think I could start a non-Bush thread without it falling prey to the usual b.s.

That would be this thread, Enchanted http://www.auctionwatch.com/mesg/read.html?num=28&id=80742&thread=80647, and you're right, there was a great deal of protectiveness of unknown possible AW members.
