I don't know that they are on the wane so much as just very changed. Used to be just AW, and now folks are scattered all over the web.

What do you expect?
Women aren't very interesting, generally. Their concerns are trite, and their range of intellect is extremely limited. What sort of conversation can really be had with a woman without the inevitable return to their pervading attention to home, children, romance, gossip, and cats?
That, coupled with endless drone reminders, by women, to stay on the dumb topic has squeezed the life out of this place.

I think that the boards have been gradually declining for about a year with only sporadic bursts of activity. Too many boards with too few posters.

Now see this is the general cause of the decline here on the boards....that damned email me bit.
You know that takes all the fun out of a board when people revert to emails....why I have even heard tell that some folks downright resent it.

Well! I was going to ask your thoughts on European cars, British motors in particular, and what you feelings are on how hard it is to get parts for them, and how they do seem to break down a lot. Or how bout that Wankel engine?

I'm sure there are many factors:
April and May are perfect months to do all of the outside work before the heat forces you inside (if you mind it like I do).
College graduations.
People are starting to take some vacation time.
There are many more OAI chat boards. I follow 5 of them, but do most of my posting at AW. Will post on one other if motivated. Just don't have the desire to post on a lot of boards. I've never been very good at chit-chat.
People take breaks. Either they leave the boards for days at a time, or just lurk for days at a time.
Of course, nothing like a controversial thread to bring everybody out of the woodwork. LOL

I will take a peek here when I need a break between packing items and composing letters or writing on my book. I can not imaigine having enough time to pay attention to 4 or 5.
When I was a little boy I figured out that the women were discussing everything of importance in the kitchen and it was much more interesting than watching football in the living-room with the men and listening to beer burps.
