I had no idea my city is a big target, although with the size of it, I'm not surprised. In all of my almost 600 eBay transactions, only one package has gone missing, and it was to me (strangely enough it was one of the few that was insured).
Here's the article: http://www.usps.com/postalinspectors/mailthft.htm
What I find funny though is that is says they're trying to increase customer awareness...this is the first I've heard about it! I was bored and clicked on the Postal Inspector link on the front page.
I can say some of these carriers drive me crazy though. I have gotten other peoples mail several times. It's either our next door neighbor, no biggie-just take it over there. Or it's for the same house number about 3 streets north.
One time even UPS delivered a wrong package (it was for the same house number, 3 streets north one). Fortunately for some odd reason, the addressee's phone number was on the shipping label. So we just called them up and told them we had their package. Needless to say they were profusely grateful. I just said I did what I'd want anyone else to do if they got mine and it was the right thing to do.
One of the things I like about my house is rather than a mailbox, we have a slot in the door. While security wise I don't like it, at least I know where my envelope mail is at least (ie. no lost bidder payments unless it's stolen before it gets to my house). Plus the dog goes nutso when anyone plays with the flap (my poor carrier! ) But we have a security screen door with a deadbolt too, so that gets locked after the mail comes.
Because of all of my packages and the dog issue (she doesn't believe it's a game to him ), she's asked us to get a normal mailbox. We got the biggest one we could find that locks, we just need to pour some concrete to install it (it's a pedestal kind). But what to do with my packages or when I get several?? I've thought of getting like a trunk to put on the porch, secure it to something and put a lock on it. Good idea?

They make tool boxes for the back of pickup trucks that bolt down. They are already set up to fasten and lock, waterproof, and made with the idea of resisting break in. The size is generous and if you don't need it latter it should be easy to sell. Bolt it right to the porch.
