eSeller004,
I'm sorry but I had to delete your post as it contained a link to a competitor.
Thank you,

Sara,
No problem. Didn't realize eDeal was an auction management competitor of AuctionWatch. However, I simply posted the link to eDeal to display how easy it is for anyone to create a rival auction site these days.

What I see on the site is a very healthy combination of charitable good will and good ol' American capitalism. This is an auction site worth patronizing, IMHO.

Thanks, Rogulus. I guess it's very fortunate for all of us that you (who never posted prior to starting this thread) and avatar007 (who wasn't registered until yesterday) have both happend along to let us know about this new site. Y'all aren't, like, associated with it in any way, are ya?

Associated with it in a business sense? No. Do I know the people responsible for the site? Yes.
This is a message board dedicated to "Other Online Auctions." I'm aware of an auction site that chooses to emphasize charity and goodwill married with the concepts of "Profit Making" and "Capitalism," as opposed to promoting pure unadulterated greed.
The website just began operations a few days ago and I am unashamedly making a small effort to spread the word.
Nothing up my sleeve ...

I'm using Netscape version 4.77 [latest version]. This is what I get for a front page at www.itchybid.com:
[itchybid graphic]
In these trying times of browser wars, we know sometimes its hard to choose the
right browser for your system. Even know netscape is a fine browser we have
chosen to use internet explorer on our site. To continue you will need to shut
down netscape and launch this site with internet explorer if you do not have
internet explorer you may download it by clicking on the link below.
We would like to thank you for your patience and hope you enjoy our site.

I received the same error as well in Netscape. That is a very strage thing to do. Why would a site do such a strange thing?

Ooh, that is a very unkind thing to do! Even though it's a small percentage there is a huge number of people out there using Netscape. I'd use it myself but found that I didn't like it so went back to IE.
I spent a lot of time learning how to make web pages compatible with Netscape. Once you get it figured out it's simply a matter of knowing where to add extra HTML and the like. Granted, the tables still are a bit weird (and if someone knows how to correct that I'd love to know! ) but it definately isn't an insurmountable task.

ItchyBid uses some very advanced features, alot of these features use the xml dom objects inside of internet explorer.
I agree with wallypog that its pretty simple to make a basic web site that is database driven work in netscape as well, however certain features of itchybid will not work.
If ItchyBid gets enough people asking for netscape to work we will make a version that is compatable with netscape.
I hope this anwsers some questions anymore tech questions that i can anwser please let me know.
Hot2Trot
PS
wallypog the best way to get around both browsers is to use layers in your html.
if using reg tables the best way is to use percents on your widths.

Really, this is the strangest thing I've heard in quite some time; a mass market web site compatible only with "IE" browser!
I design auction templates and complete web sites. It's a given that cross-platform compatibility is an absolute must - period.
What's up, Microsoft behind this outfit?

Yes i am, i am one of the programmers that helped design the backend side of things.
i was told that people were wanting to know why we dont use netscape so i decide to shed some light on the subject.

Can you expound on this? Would this be in the area of special features or security?

elecdata1,
Sure i can anwser this, ItchyBid has some features like whats called "Itchy's Garage" a system designed for powersellers to house their products in a real warehouse and use our automated shipping system to manage your products. some other features are like the ones we have with fedex, where fedex will issuse you a call tag and come pick the product up from your house and ship it for you.
we also have a safehouse designed for buyers and sellers where when a sell is made you can have the product shipped to a bonded warehouse until payment is arrived then shipped to seller this works for both sides of the auction process.
there are more features than this but the ones above use xmldom objects to pass data back and forth to the warehouses and to shipping carriers for pickups etc.
in order to make this stuff work in real-time over the internet we decide the best platform was .net
even know .net does have certain draw backs like the netscape issuse. we feel it is the best platform for us.
btw
its rumored that netscape will add the dom object to their browser if this is true then itchybid will work in netscape.
does this help at all?
i know its kind of lengthy

Hot2Trot,
Just checked out your site. That's a nice clean design you have there for itchybid! Not cluttered at all. I like your features too like Online Haggling, Fleamarket, ItchyGames, etc. Are these services available now?
Its too bad Netscape doesn't support XML at this point. It's like Netscape's still operating in the Stone Ages! You'd figure AOL would try and keep them up to speed with Microsoft. Nope! If you don't support XML, then you can't share data across websites and that's the biggest problem.
Sounds like you guys are ahead of the curve in many respects. Nice site too!

Hot2Trot,
Where's the Fee Schedule located on your site?
Do you guys plan to advertise and have funds allocated for it? A site with a great layout but no bidders is useless.

the fee schedule hasn't been put online yet i know it is extremly low with a percentage of every listing going to charity.
as far as advertising goes i wont comment on that except for the fact that since everyone behind itchybid are business people not much unlike most sellers.
we have not spent millions making the site and have practilly no overhead. which means we have a fair amount to spend on advertising this will not be done in the standard auction fasion of buying banners and poping windows on people we are taking a more old school approach to advertising in a joint effort with the partner distrubition companies we will combine forces and use their exsisting marketing people to advertise.

Hot2Trot,
Thanks for the answers! That might be a better way to approach marketing. I think it was Amazon who used to appear in Postal Service commercials which immediately lent them credibility. Nice tactic!
So do you have an integrated payment mechanism like Half.com or Amazon which automatically pays sellers at the conclusion of an auction? This prevents deadbeat bidders!
And do you have a bulk lister for the site?

Hot2Trot, that's an interesting approach - use all the nifty proprietary MS stuff and wait for the MS to steamroller over everybody. Of course, after the court rulings this week, HP, Gateway, Dell, etc no longer have to include IE on their computers anymore, but I'm sure all the newbies will be willing to figure out how to download and install it just like they did for Netscape....
