I recently bought an item from an auction site that was a whopping .30. The shipping was reasonable at $1.00 but when I got the auction notice I realized the seller would NOT take paypal or checks. I checked her feedback and thought this curious since she had only sold and had used paypal to pay. In the past, I have been foolish but lucky in sending cash to sellers for very small amounts for items such as this. When it calls for currency I would put in new postage stamps instead of currency to roll around or be heavy. Sellers thought this was the greatest thing since sex. So I sent an email to this seller and ask if I could tear off my stamp roll 4 stamps of .34 each for a total of $1.36, she would MAKE money, and send that rather than going to pay .75 for a money order. After all, WHO cannot use postage stamps?????????
She was inncensed! She even used the f word in her response to me and called me stupid and illiterate for offering her, of all things, postage stamps. She said she was doing this to make money, NOT postage stamps!!!
I personally would not be offended were I the seller........
Was I wrong in making the offer? She did say she would accept CASH!!!!!

PayPal fees would be huge percentage-wise on a small sale. Maybe a $1 bill and a 33 cent stamp would have been more appreciated as an offer. Three dimes taped to a index card or two along with a dollar bill is pretty safe and the best way to send $1.30 cash. Maybe the seller was hoping to get a lot than a $1 and was upset over the low bid or the seller is very immature. Who knows, it's all part of the online auction expierence.

Perhaps she was upset by the fact that you indicated that you'd be willing to spend 75 cents for a money order to be sure she didn't rip you off in the amount of $1.30. That is rather insulting.
I am puzzled why you'd be willing send $1.36 worth of stamps instead of sending $1.30 in cash. In either situation, the seller could "rip you off", and with cash you'd be out less money.
Of course, there was no excuse for her response to you - it was completely unprofessional. If she had indicated "cash only" in her auction and didn't want stamps, she should have simply responded to your e-mail with "no I'm sorry, as per the auction description, please send cash or a money order."

I'd probably terminate the deal...no reason why one should put up with such foul language.
Anyway, if she's trying to make money, why on earth is she spending TIME (which they say is money) arguing over a piddly $1.36? Looks to me that she's doing a truly dreadful job of making money.
You don't deserve to be treated like that at any rate!

I'd have no problem with receiving a couple bucks in postage stamps. You probably ran into an auction seller that's thoroughly frustrated by the lackluster performance of the free auctionsites.

Dimview,
Did Allykat name the auction site? I must have missed that. Even if it was bought on a free auction site, that has nothing to do with this topic. I see plenty of auction close on Ebay for around a $1.00.
Allykat,
Your proposal would not have bothered me.

Guess for me it's different, being in Canada, I'd have little use for American stamps, but we're talking about $1.36 here--- chuck a $1 bill into an envelope with a bit of change taped to a card, and if it "vanishes", oh well--- it was *$1.36*-- hardly enough to worry about at all )

No, allykat didn't mention the name of the auction site. And neither did I.
But the message was posted here in the "other online auctions" forum, not the eBay forum, and all of the "other online auctions" have very low sell-through rates, so the problem with my comment would be *what*?

The auction site it occurred on is not relevant, because even epier has many different sellers, the vast majority of which I'm sure are class acts.
There's no excuse for the seller's language in any case.

Thank you for your opinions. Actually the sight was ebay. I posted it here out of habit. Topics tend to get lost in ebay section because there are so many posted so quickly. Actually the seller would not have had a paypal fee because she has only PAID via paypal. This was, accrding to her feedback, her first sale. I would NEVER offer American Stamps to someone in Canada. And obviously she would not be able to mail a tape for $1.00 from Canada. I think she was not very bright to offer the tape at such a low price because actually she made no money. It sold for .30 and that was her listing fee! With reasonable shipping fee of a buck, she lost her rear end and showed it also. I just hate to pay .50 - to .90 for a money order for $1.30!!!! It just seems so dumb. Actually I got the item for my aged mom, who wanted one certain song on it that my deceased brother used to sing. We cannot find it anywhere. I was just shocked at her attitude because I have done this before and people don't mind. I hate to tape three dimes to a card because it makes it heavy and kind of obvious. When she said "I am in this to make money, not postage stamps" I thought "well you didn't make any money at what you sold it for and you can take the money and BUY your stamps when you need them!!!"EVERYONE uses postage stamps!!!!! I hate to have to stand in line to buy them! Oh well there is a ---head that comes along every now and then. Thanks again.........

Wow! One should be really, really cautious at putting in items at such a low starting price. If I had goofed like that, I would have at least been as gracious a seller as possible in the hopes that you would bid from me again at a slightly more profitable rate
She sounds a real dolt. I guess if you really want the item, though, you could risk it slightly and just send her a couple of bucks with a little note giving her a bit of advice on how to be a better seller. She might just keep the cash though....

Some years ago one of my mail order supplier friends told me a story about how he had responded to a wide circulation magazine classified ad which offered recipes (for a small amount of money). He received the recipes O.K. The problem was, they were typed on toilet paper. Apparently the person who had placed the ad was disappointed at the lack of orders. My friend had the toilet paper recipes framed.

Gosh, Dimview! I guess this particular item got a lackluster performance on the almighty Ebay! ROTFLMAO!

I would not be offended to receive a payment of $1.30 in postage stamps. You did fine. If you got a good deal, spring for the money order and foget it.

This may be a generational thingy...I am old enough(barely) to remember when you mailed ordered,,many times the ads would say..1.00 in cash or postage stamps...it was a currency in the i believe last 40's & 50's..hehe
anyway,,Sellers like this make it hard on us all..i remember reading a thread of a seller here A Winner paypaled her the money,(pretty good sale too..not just 1.00) & accidently forgot to inc the shipping.
This seller DEMANDED she inc.the extra .30...
many irate emails back in forth over the "principle"of the thing..
ghhessh...I would never ever treat a good customer that way..who knows how much she lost in future sales from the bidder, family, friends,,etc.for a stinkin .30!
I live in the country 30 miles from the bank..i appreciate getting credit card payments actually,i save that much in gas.
Anyway,,i would love to receive a small payment in stamps!saves time in line at the post office..
She must have been mad about the low winning bid.
My hubbys boss says I should put all my stuff at 1.00 no reserve.(has no idea of auctions down, slow times etc)..well i tried it once with a 10.00 item...yup,,,had to happily send it out for 1.00 & i did..i was just as nice as if it had been $100.00 & the upside was the person was so thrilled, left me wonderful feedback & is still happy with her great deal..but never again,i am mostly a 9.99 seller no reserve..how do people sell for .50 or 1.00? isn't our work & time for all that goes with a listing & sale worth something?good luck everyone!hope we have a great fall & Holiday season this year..

According to your earlier post, you bought the money order last Tuesday. So, the earliest you could have mailed payment was Tuesday. Since Tuesday, the envelope would have had travel to its destination (say 3 days, which would be Friday), been opened and the item stuck in an envelope and dropped in a mail box (say 1 day, Saturday if mailed promptly) and then travelled back to you (say 3 days). That would be tomorrow at the earliest (Tuesday).
Yet you are sending e-mails (PLURAL) to the seller TODAY (Monday) saying you haven't received the item and complaining on a chatboard that you think you've been ripped off???????

Meoww PFT PFT Irene!!! Having PMS are you?
I was simply "thinking out loud" to a group of people who agreed with me that the entire idea this seller had was ludricous! Obviously you are not one of those people. I am a very intuitive person and I have a FEELING she will not send the item! I have not been "emiling her complaining of not getting the item"...but rather asking if the money order has been received and if the item has shipped. The simple fact that the emails are bouncing back send up a red flag! I hope your day gets better!!!
