I have been lurking here on and off for about a year and I have one question:

After all of your research, note sharing, experimenting, etc., is anybody actually making any money from any auction site other than eBay?

I'm not talking about selling thirty cent merchandise that took you fifteen minutes to list. To me that's a loss, because time is money.

Thank! I look forward to your responses.

I listed 4 items in ebay last week sold 2.

I have alot listed on bidville normaly sell about 10 items a week my prices range from $2.50 to $50.00. The biggest ticket item I have sold there was $23. But I have sold combined items to people that have totaled up to between $45 to $20.

I list off and on with auctionsaloon made one sell with them.

I have listed with BB since they opened it is not worth talking about.

I tryed Lowestbid the site always cause my computer to freezeup. Have never even been able to list.

I like alot of others left Yahoo but have slipped back off and on and listed a little the sales there for me have real dropped I may have sold 2 items since Feb.

I was making some money on Amazon in the summer of 1999. The auctions tanked when Amazon zShops opened in October 1999 So I started listing on zShops. I did O.K., not great though. When Amazon quadrupled the monthly fees in July 2000, I left.

In October 2000, looking for another home for my stuff, I thought I'd give Yahoo another shot. I had looked at the auctions from time to time over the previous year, but no one selling my type of item seemed to be making any sales. However, I read a thread in the Yahoo forum strongly recommending 1st bid win auctions. I thought I'd give it a try. Within a week I thought I'd hit the motherlode. It didn't last of course - Yahoo implemented fees in early January. Although I have still done well there (until the summer), I am only listing a fraction of what I used to list and sell. My type of item takes time to reach the notice of the right buyer.

My conclusion from my experiences is that any success anywhere is probably temporary. Things change and change suddenly. It's best not to put all one's eggs in one basket and to actively keep a look out for new ways and places to sell one's merchandise.

Stockticker,

So, in essence, it is a good idea to keep rotating your stock through the various sites, correct?

For instance, if your items don't get a bite at ebay, move them to yahoo.
Yahoo dead? move them to bidville or sellyouritem, etc.

Makes good business sense to me.

Hi Toollady,

I'm very much a part-timer at on-line sales since I have a full time job. I would definitely have done a lot more experimenting if I'd had the time. When I had on off-line mail order business, I used to place ads in magazines where I knew I'd get a good response and at the same time, I'd also usually be trying out a new publication.

I'm still kicking myself for not starting to read the AW Yahoo forum some months earlier than I did. I would have enjoyed that Yahoo motherlode a lot longer. That's why I've been reading this forum so regularly. I try not to make the same mistake twice.

I make between 8k and 10k a month on www.playerauctions.com selling online accounts and items. Before I moved to Player Aucitons I was making about 6k a month on Ebay, my sales have actually picked up on Player Auctions, the only people going there are fellow gamers so its worked out a lot better. I know a lot of other users are doing even better then me as I haven't even cracked the top 5 seller list, I believe there is one seller who is clearing over 20k a month.

zgames,

While I'm sure you do very well at playerauctions, most of us are looking for an auction site that has many different categories.

Not everyone lists like items so a niche auction isn't the best site for everyone.

I been on Ebay for a few years now buying and selling Militaria collectibles, and just this past year I have had to find other auction sites to auction off my military goodies as Ebay like so many other auction sites Yahoo,Epier..Etc..on the internet have banned many types of WWII German military collectibles..So far sales had kinda slumped due to this and dont seem to find the buyers on other auctions like I had on Ebay,as sales were very good to me back on Ebay..Now Im not saying that I could stop working my day job by anymeans but it was a nice chunk of change I would have towards the end of each month after many sales of WWII German Militaria listed up on the Bay..Auction web sites that do support just only military collectibles dont even fetch the kinda bids I did on the bay..but have been finding other collectibles to wheel & deal with on the bay which has helped $$ wise in funding my hunt for military collectibles..But to say if I was making any money on other auction sites on the internet just in the stuff I deal in?my answer would be NO..I have done very well on Ebay from time to time on high dollar military collectibles, sometimes fetching more money than if I was to sale it here at home at some militaria trade show..Good Luck to all, with your future auction

Yes, I have a greater sell through rate on Yahoo than I did on eBay. I don't pay all the fees that are part of the eBay "experience" and other than slower to pay bidders on Yahoo, it is a easier site to navigate, list and manage my auctions.

I am not big time. I don't sell for a living but I do make a profit, sometimes a lot, sometimes a little. I am holding steady at an average 27%, even through the slow summer months. My sell through rate is 80% and I haven't had but one NPB this year.
And repeat buyers. So, for now it's Yahoo for my sales.

I still try some of the no fee sites from time to time but I haven't had much luck on them, so far. It takes time for a site to get going and become known and many don't advertize.

The suggestion I have for someone who is thinking of getting into on line auctioning, is to start with something you know a lot about and have a love for. It's the only way I know to try and make a living doing this. If your love is books, then sell books. If it's music, sell music. Dolls, sell dolls. Glass and pottery, sell glass and pottery. Your interest and knowelege will draw those buyers with the same interest. Your interest will take you to the auction sites that sell to people of like interest.

I'm not making a penny (refuse to give any site my credit card and bank information just so I can use their venue to sell stuff), but I am sure spending a lot

I gotta slow down though ... at least until you sellers can convince eBay et al to let me sell to make enough money to keep buying your stuff.

My fb at eBay is rising daily. Is there such a thing as a "Power Buyer"? If I were to become one, do you think eBay would realize that "I'm good for it, already" and let me sell without a CC?

There is an Aussie site where I consistntly manage a 40% sell thru rate and multiple bidders. Free listings with a very small FVF.
Only problem is you'll have to list in Aussie dollars which is a simple exercise because you just double your US$ price. I have noticed some US sellers already list there.
And NO, I don't have any shares in the site. If you need any help you can email me on [email protected].

RB,

Not all sites require a credit card to sell.

321gone and sellyouritem are 2 that don't require a credit card.

toollady ... Yes, but I want to actually sell stuff ... not just post a bunch of listings that are only viewed by me once in awhile and that never get bids

All of the free sites are dead in terms of sales ...

Actually these small sites are not dead and would be a excellent place for new sellers to build.

In fact there is no better way to build an alternative to Ebay then to have new sellers start out selling and buying some where else.

This is how Yahoo and amazon got there start !!

IF you want to be sucessfull Imatate sucess Yahoo and amazon are sucesfull but to read these boards as well as ebay sells no seller there is sucessfull.

Read the Post and this will be what you find they list and sell there but its all mainly supporting Ebay and secondary services not them...

RB,

Right now sellyouritem is the only site who's sell rate climbs every time it is reviewed.

They are at roughly 2% as of yesterday. Their listings have also taken a big jump since reported yesterday and they are advertising in trade publications.

The jump was probably due to the monthly club99 event. Even those items have about a 5% bid rate as of this morning and have only been running about 24 hours.

Can't sell anything if it's not listed.
