Just wanted to let Aw readers know that as of yesterday, The Bidville prez has announced a non-credit card verification system on Bidville, and has also modified the community there. These are positive changes. Do you think they, especially the verification will help further improve the site?

Yes, provided there is a policy in place to suspend deadbeats after four (or whatever) non-paying bidder (NPB) incidents.

The new verification system should keep out the very non-computer savvy users for a while. I challenged a friend to get an account on BV last night with a free account and he had one in less than four minutes. Do you want me to post the very simple way he did it? I think eBay pays a lot of money on their ISP verification search engine and BV just threw something together to calm the restless natives.

Well guys ... you know me. I was suspended quite some time ago. This morning I was able to create two new BV ids without a credit card and using hotmail. I won't be using them though (honest Ed!).

Yes bids, I think we would be interested, we know the system is not perfect, the Prez said so. But I am sure that pointing out any flaws found would be helpful.

RB, my friend never took the super obvious route and used hotmail Okay, a person goes to a search engine and enters "free email". There are several sites that list over 1,000 web sites with free email accounts. Try to avoid sites that have "mail" in their email addresses or common free email sites ( of course, hotmail.com worked for RB though ). Some sites take on a minute to get an email address that you'd swear was a paid ISP email address. eBay will block 99% of these and must have spider robots gathering the new ones every day.

Perhaps verification is in the to-be-implemented phase, and not really in place yet?

I'd be happy to deal with some percentage of deadbeats on Bidville --- if it only ment that I was getting some pageviews and bids!
From my observations, deadbeats are a mute point when I list an auction for weeks and get 0 page views...
Seems to me whatever efforts were put into this free email blocking thing would have been better put to use in some other direction - advertising perhaps?

Your question was will the changes "....help further improve the site?"
The change that will improve the site is when the Prez STOPS catering to the mob and re-takes control of his own site! As I said on another thread...
"BV Prez has abdicated his "leadership" chair and the inmates are running the asylum. A small group of people are running rampant spouting words like "what's best for BV" when, in reality, they are only concerned with their own power. A real shame....BV had some potential."
No thanks..... I'll take my business (and money) elsewhere.

Dim ... you must be referring to "The Posse/"My Gang"/The Illiterate 3 Stooges" eh
btw, the term "my gang" is verbatim from an email I received from the Prez yesterday!!
exexec ... what a great expression to describe the situation! Hope you don't mind if I use it someday

You know it is a shame when people resort to name calling because they are too stupid to make valid points. I am so glad I have my best friend the calculator.

Actually I may just use one of my new IDs over there ... not to "disrupt" anyone or even say anything, but to just sit back and enjoy the circus!
Dim ...
"The Posse" is what they call themselves ...
"My gang" is what Steady-Eddie calls them ...
"The I3S" is what I call them ...
Even if someone did mention names here, it wouldn't mean anything anyway ... they're all phoney IDs being used by members who have a problem with members using phoney IDs ...
D'Oh!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your comment:

is very close to the line. Please drop it down a notch.

I don't even have an ISP email or account. I share a pc and the ISP email is in their name. I had used only Yahoo mail but several sites I wanted to sign up refused free mail addresses. So I got a free mail with a .net instead of .com and every single site that claimed to reject free mails has accepted it without hesitation for years.
Anyway, with all the member demands for any verification type action the past several days a troublemaker would have to be a complete idiot not to see this coming and have prepared. It was pretty easy to guess the change would only involve new sign-ups so I don't doubt these people went ahead and grabbed lots of new id's the past few days to store for future use. If not, I'm sure with 1500 freemail sites across the web they can still find plenty that will work there.
As far as modifying the community one deleted board contained many warnings of deadbeat bidder and seller IDs some of us found quite useful knowing who to avoid. So positive change? I guess as far as getting rid of the evidence detailing the rip-offs & deadbeats on the site does look better for unsuspecting new members. Forbidding discussion of other auction sites is very controlling and ebayesque which was something I thought site supporters were against. Now they cheer all these new restrictions, go figure.

I suggest you take a closer look at the userIDs before issuing your directives.

Arghh ... it's a conspiracy! AW has been invaded by a not-quite-perfect clone in an attempt to disrupt this forum. Either that or one of The I3S never got to that spelling lesson ...
