While I admire your creative impulse, there is a cautionary note. I have found on many auctions that there is a delay while the background is loaded. If it is a second or so, no problem, but most take much longer, and if the server is down, your entire auction will just hang there, a blank page, and I move on.
I would be absolutely certain you have not affected the speed of getting your item before bidding eyes when I added anything beyond text and pictures. The slowness of loading any element can lose the prospective bidder which is why free services aren't really free. They are - almost without exception - slow and unreliable.

Hi - I think I can help. <br>
There is an html command that inserts a background. However, the command needs an image, like a picture (jpg), that you have to give it a URL address for. Then, rather than summoning a picture and displaying it once at the location you choose, the command summons the background picture/image and tiles it repeatedly and seamlessly across the back of your page.<br>
You need:<br>
the command<br>
a pic URL where you've uploaded your background image.<br>
Anyone reading who thinks that I'm in error, please correct me. Won't be offended, merely relieved.<br>MAD

another cautionary note if you don't mind. If your using backgrouds, make sure their not too busy or interfere with the text of your listing, if I see backgrounds cluttering what I'm trying to see or read...I hit the back button. Backgrounds can sometimes mean the loss of a bid.

Look what i found..
a really simple tutorial for lots of great stuff..even i understand it.one of the easiest i have seen....paste this in your location bar & hit enter..maybe print it out..i think html is very fun...
especially good if you just want say green background for Christmas..(Warning...most people say red makes them click off immediately!LOL)
try this in your description..
<bgcolor="green">
you can get the list of colors and or number codes which can be used for fancier colors also from the relayskool.com site..good luck bitt & Yes Mad...it was hard for me when i was new to understand the concept of where that image has to be...somewhere right?LOL
so yes, if you want a picture background,,it must be hosted somewhere on the net..then you put the url to it..(different than what i was telling them about..just plain colors like blue or green do not require this technique..hope this clarifys it..)edited to add clarification)LOL
