Since someone that use to list the numbers has left AW I wish to track the number of items listed on BV. Since Monday, October 16 will be a milestone of sorts for the BV site I will start there:

10/16/01 1,084,827 items

I will not goad the site users the way the previous ( now exiled ) poster of site statistics did but rather simply chronicle the number of listings.

every three days seems reasonable .....

Isn't this number available on their site's front page? IOW, is it worth posting here?

At least the other stats we were seeing had category breakdowns, which for most of us has more value.

Getting close

Now, how about number of sales in each of these categories (the only true measure of the venue's success)?

this will be a running total ...

10/16/01 1,084,827 items
10/19/01 1,086,680 items
With each passing BV milestone the effects should be visible on the running total.

You *almost* understand telwil

I could care less about the BV numbers, but for those who *do care*, I'm simply suggesting that listing totals don't give them any information that they cannot easily access themselves.

Whether or not you liked the "old stats" and the verbage that went with them is irrelevant. They did take a lot of time to prepare and I think some AW readers truly do miss them.

Hope this clears up any misunderstandings you may have

RB,

I would be happy to do a break down for you, but I'm sure my statistical prowess pales in comparison to those who have come before me!

As someone mentioned in another thread. What good is a count on just listing numbers, when many sites allow the same item to be listed in 2 or 3 different categories? Without searching out every single item that is listed in multiple categories (which would be nearly impossible) you could not even get a close count on actual listings.

Another question is how many of these listings have been listed for months(maybe even by users that just gave up and left the sites) because ePier (I don't know for sure about others) has an automatic relist that relists an item over and over for eternitity

Not all sites offer auctions to be listed in multiple categories.

And while items may be re-listed indefinitely on some of the sites, some items need the right audience to sell.

Since we as sellers are nomads, who is to say bidders aren't as well. You may list an item and get no hits and take it down. Next week a new user goes to the site and is looking for what you had listed last week.

It's not there anymore, you don't get to move it out and the potential new bidder leaves because the site doesn't have what they are looking for.

Another catch 22 for the 2nd tier sites.

What sites now, don't have the multiple category option? Most that I have checked has it. Maybe I am looking at all the wrong sites.

Opals4u,

I don't think Bidville or 321gone.com(although 321gone, is just about gone. Their listings have slipped dramatically) does, at least I didn't see a place to add a second category.

I know sellyouritem.com doesn't offer a 2nd category.

I'm sure there are a few others as well.

Amazing. I just went to the bidville site (I haven't been there in awhile).

1,000,000+ auctions. Nearly 0 bidders. Its like a Costco or Sam's Club open with no customers.

A scary sci-fi movie where you are the last person on earth, and decide to be a seller.

You would think, that with that many auctions, and sellers, that bidville would solely concentrate on getting bidders or raising funds to get bidders. Though, they don't really have a funding.

I would also like to see them change their "look". That paypal.com rip off look is over with.

And in your lonliness, you decide to end it all by jumping off the tallest building you can find. On the way down, you hear a phone ringing ...

Yeah, I remember that one

But at BV, you can bully the PREZ into removing your negative feedback. What other site will cave in without even investigating to see if the Negs were deserved.

SPLAT! You reach the ground.

The phone rings a few more times, then is picked up by an electronic answering machine.

"Hello?"

"Hello? I just placed bids on 27 of your auctions and need a shipping quote."

"Hello ... "

I'm amazed at this discussion. People seem to be obsessed about a site (BidVille) that they don't even like. Something wrong with this picture. UMMMMMMMM

Now to the numbers present which started this thread. It appears to me that logic would suggest that if the listings keep increasing at BidVille then evidently enough people are getting sales if they are continually adding items and increasing the total numbers. Perhaps someone should study the sociology and perhaps the psychology behind this. That might be more revealing than reading continual negative slants offered by people who profess to not like the site or who vow to never visit the site again. These observations continually come from the same individual which respresent a handfull of people vs the very large group of continually satisfied sellers at this point in time.
I assure those that are interested that there is no "smell of death" currently at Bidville. Recent improvements instituted have made it even a happier place.

Have a good day one and all.

Dreamgirl,

Actually, the only reason why the numbers are climbing is because there is a seller that has an exclusive category (no one else can list in it) and they have about 300,000 (yes, 3 hundred thousand) listings in it.

Of course, that same seller also has those same items listed on at least 2 other sites and has right in their description that they reserve the right to cancel the auction if it has sold elsewhere.

Indeed it is quite accomodating when a site not only gives you your own special category but lets you disregard their TOS of being obligated to sell to your winning bidders. Add that personal message tool that let him double the shipping amt on all ads at the touch of one button-what a handy time saver. No wonder he wants to use BV.

I see they have changed the auto relist max to 10. Is it true it's not 10 max from the date of change forward, but a 10 max was applied to everything already on site? (I had never used more than 10 so I can't verify that. But I was told by a friend who used 25 that all theirs were changed to 10 by the site.) That should shortly rid BV of all those old 99 relist ads (if most were 5-10 day ads).

but if they were 30 day auctions it will take 10 more months to be rid of them. There has been a small flurry of listing at BV recently and I would wager that most of them are 30 day duration lists with a "Take It Now" option.
