I know I'm not very bright but recently I registered with several sites and suddenly I am swamped by Spam. Over 100 email in 4 days.
One of them has sold my email address. Can anyone help me narrow down the culprit. I'm not interested in guesses just the facts if you have any.
The Sites concerned are
ePier
Bidville
Carnaby
Gegy
One of them has to be guilty but which one?
Thanks

If it's porn type SPAM, I'd be suspicious of #2 ...

I'm registered with all but Epier. Don't receive enough spam to worry about. Was receiving porn from someone on AOL. Reported him and it came to an end!

Been registered with ePier since February, no spam in that time. Just registered with AW and was spammed this morning, some auctionsite that I quickly deleted!

Hmmm, I'm registered at Bidville and Gegy and I haven't noticed any increased activity in either of my email accounts.

If it's porn, it could be Gegy. Long story short, they are email harvesters. Want more info? Do a search here using keyword Gegy.
Bidville uses a adserver on site, so it could be them as well.

Hmmmm. I've been registered with ePier since last February, BidVille since April or somewhere around there and Carnaby for about three months now, I think.
Gegy is the only one I'm not registered with and I've never received spam in the e-mail account I use for ePier, BidVille and Carnaby.

As you can see by all the mean-spirited posts in just the last day, AW will have to shut down the message center completely ( except it's own support form ) due to lack of moderation. People ask "How can there be some much hate in the world?", just visit AW's message center to find out.
On a lighter note ... Has anyone seen that crazy doctor CEO? I have his meds.

Has anyone see the AW Announcement thread in the eBay Outlook Forum? There are over 120 posts in the thread and it seems like 90% of the posters are saying things like "No way will I give my credit card number so goodbye". If there is such a frevor about credit card verification here at AW then what chance does a site like Bidville has of getting buyers or sellers to give up there CC info? If a new buyer to BV has a question to ask on the Help Desk message boards they have to pony up their CC number to a small site just to ask the question? Read the *Help & Info* sometime on the site. It's pathetic. The bidding system has a lot of differences from eBay and can be very confusing to even a veteran auction user. Things to think about.

You're absolutely right johnnybravo55, but at *least* with giving your CC number to Bidville, there may be some benefit. I still cannot see how having a credit card can prove one's honesty or prevent members from flaming each other on the BV forums, or completing their obligations to each other, but there must be something to it ... all auction venues are asking for this now.
There is *no* way I can see the need to provide this information for a discussion forum *only* though. There's no money changing hands here. The worst thing that happens is the immature brats come out to play (like they have been here) and get zapped (like they have been here).
There has to be a market for credit card numbers, otherwise why are all of these sites desperately trying to collect them.

Sites always say "You're CC info is protected and will never be given out (sold) to spam lists tha could be created from that valuable info". But, and it is a mighty big but too, if a site goes belly up then all bets are off and that possible CC spam list is an asset as it has value and it is often sold. There have been some well publized cases of this happening.
As to the CC verification for AW use I see it as a token method of controll the trolls without active moderatoration. Without the CC verification there would be no way to permanently banish the trolls from the site. If the trolls totally trash the boards, the boards have zero value to AW and they have to be closed. If AW can exert some slight measure of control over the posters via the CC info then there is a very slight chance that the message center can survive. That's my take on the new rule.

There was an on-line DVD rental operation running out of BC last year. I joined and used my CC to pay for my rentals. That site and it's inventory, including the CC numbers and personal info for all it's members, was listed on eBay. When I found that out, I contacted them to remove my CC info before the auction ended. I heard afterwards that a few members ended up with some phantom billings on their CC accounts.
While the supporters will tell you "big deal, you're insured for fraud", it's a pain in the ass to have to cancel a card, get a new one, and notify all the companies that do automatic withdrawls (your ISP, for example).
I'd just as soon avoid that hassle.
My gut feeling is that AW is trying to get rid of their forums completely. Otherwise, why insist that long time members who don't use fake ID's (like me ... "RB" is simply my initials) must now provide a credit card number to keep posting. Doesn't make sense ...

I think they would like to keep the boards going but can not afford to pay the moderators. Instead of simply closing the boards down they are trying the CC info verification to have a small measure of control over the boards. They may be thinking that it will never work but they have to try it out anyway.

I would suspect #1 as they are desperate for money and have NO control, no safety on their site!!!

I can tell you this much that I know:
I am not registered with epier or gegy, so I have no idea. However, I registered on bidville with my old e-mail addy, and then carnaby with my new one. My older e-mail (bidville) is spamed constantly, and my new one (carnaby)is never spamed. Thats all I can say from personal experience. In my opinion I would say gegy or bidville.

You know, you can open a total fresh hotmail account, only to find out that two weeks later its filled with SPAM. You never have to USE the e-mail address and the stuff shows up.
Then if you ever do post to a usenet group, message board, etc. The next thing you know it goes up exponentially.
