Was going to a certain discussion area, and found that auctioncow is going to give away gateway computers to launch their new auction site.

I don't necessary like gateway computers, but seems pretty interesting.

Whadda ya think?

Who will they give them to? what is the catch?

No catch that I can see, just a standard you enter online and they "draw" the winners at launch date I guess.

This is not the first time it's been done, buy.com and a few others have done things like this. Promotion is promotion I guess.

And Buy.com went bankrupt when doing so. Another site that has no steam to it.

Buy.com is still alive though and one of the top sites.

Beside the point, a contest for an opening is not unusual for a site, store, or company. I just find it interesting that an alternate auction site is offering it.

I remember correctly a couple of sites had or have giveaways that amounted to JUST free listing or a t-shirt or something.

Myself, I can use a new computer.

First of all, Buy.com is NOT profitable, and will most likely go out of business due to a slow down in the economy. Gateway on the other hand is still around due to a nice injection of fund from our good friends at Microsoft. Microsoft has a majority owner ship in both Gateway and Apple computer. The injections of funds came in in 1999.

First, I never said buy.com was PROFITABLE. I said it was a top site, and it is.

Second, neither are a lot of other dotcom companies, including paypal.com. There are probably hundreds of non-profitable sites on the internet and many are some TOP sites. I also read that amazon.com has never made a profit either, but at least has turned around and is HEADED in that direction.

That is all beside the point. Even PROFITABLE well established companies do giveaways. Just because someone offers a giveaway doesn't mean they are going to do badly.

When will they launch? I checked it out and the only thing that's active is the message board. Or...am I doing something wrong?

I haven't seen a launch date for the auction site yet, so I don't know.

Hopefully, faster than the rest of the other sites.

We are set to open the auction site in December. We don't have an exact date, as there are a few minor issues with the software to be worked out, and some testing. This will all happen continuing in November.

Our contest will start in November, as soon as the form page is ready and we have insured that certain other aspects are okay.

We don't plan to weigh down the site with a bunch of unecessary features, and it will be a pure (well as pure as we can make it) auction site.

Auctionboss: I am sorry if you are unhappy with us already for some reason.

I was just kidding... Don't be so serious. Who knows... Maybe you'll make it to be one of the top sites too.

Best of luck!

hhhmmm..... What kind of fees are there going to be at auctioncow.com?

Got the user agreement or privacy policy posted yet?

What kind of seller tools will be available?

What kind of advertising do you plan on doing? (besides posting to auction related boards? *grin*)

LOL, bidsbids! Good point.

Yea, I don't see an IBM computer to match the specs and price of the Gateway model, especially at $899.00 (got a link to the IBM computer that matches this one for $899?). I clicked on the link and its a nice system. I never had a lot of love for Gateway though. Really I like the second prize one, as I tend to like small sized machines.
