As we are all probably going to be EX A/W Users in the future....Unless you like giving out your CC number??
I say that Carnaby.com is going to be the auction site that will make most of us happy. What do you think????

Number One!!! NOT
I registered a couple of days ago and last night I went to place a bid and a box popped open and said I MUST REGISTER A CC BEFORE BIDDING. Just because I used my Yahoo email and not my ISP email based address. Well that is a problem because for the last 6 or 7 years I haven’t bothered to use an ISP addy of any sort. I learn my lesson with that after loosing my email address when I changed ISP’s for the first time and everybody I gave my email address too I had to recontact with a new one. So it’s been web base email for me ever since.
Ebay,Epier,Haggle,Bidville and others had no problem with that.
Almost forgot and Yahoo also. LOL
I even use my web base when I'm dealing with VISA for cripes sakes.

edit to add. This was to place a BID not SELL.

I think that Carnaby want to protect both Sellers and Bidders against those "unwanted types"....The NON PAYING BIDDER and maybe also the NON DELIVERING SELLER......so they may require a CC and verify a "true ISP" addy for you.......they are a "safe" site and I am happy to give them my CC number!!!
Perhaps decent Sellers (like me) are sick to death of deadbeats, and NPB's who sign up under "free hotmail" or other addy's and then bid/sell and do NOT deliver!!!!
You mentioned that you wanted to bid.....well that is great! Would you not like the Seller to have a CC on file to make sure they are legitimate????
I think Carnaby are maybe trying to get rid of "potential" NPB's and Non Delivering Sellers......by getting a CC and also asking for a major ISP and NOT a FREE addy!!
Just my opinion, but I like that!
Sorry forgot to add that auction sites are a bit different than paying your Visa Card...sheesh those guys have your true address, home phone number and probably how many kids you have, plus what you eat for breakfast!!!...LOL!!!

Well beecandles
I guess i,m a one of those "unwanted types"....
Looks like another bidville!!
I think I would rather go back to SELLING/buying on Ebay & Yahoo than go through any more bright auction site ideas.

Carnaby number one... Not really. True it is one of the best second or third tier auction sites, but there is also eDeal, Haggle, Auctionweiser, and TbayAuctions. Those will probably be the ones that battle it out. In the end, there will only be at most two or three major second tier sites.. But I doubt that Carnaby will be it. Why?? Carnaby has been around since 97', and it just started to take some steam in September of this year. It will lose smoke like ePier and Bidville.

Any site that blows up to fast will eventually burst. You are seeing it with Bidville and ePier, and Carnaby will probably be one of the next. The simple fact is, that before September, they only had a few hundred auctions. Within six months, they will soon fade away. It's sadly true. You need a company that is growing slowly and steadily in order to succeed. A company that is actually a company, and that is run like a company. And this is what it is.

As long as Carnaby is one of the 2 or 3 auction sites that actually does advertise RELENTLESSLY it will have a bright future.

Goodbye and best wishes to Carnaby and all the people on the board!

Hi Auctionboss, Your quote above is actually a fairly good description of Carnaby.
Yes, they have been around sine 97, but only went live this past July. Most of the time since then has involved beta testing of Max (bulkloader), auction manager tools, auction import features, and storefronts with shopping cart functions. They did limited advertising in August to attract folks, and early next week an advertising campaign is starting with target banner ads, radio and print ads. They have also started an incentive program for auctioneers to attract a larger seller base.

So from my rinky dink point of view, Carnaby will be one of the survivors, and a strong one at that.

Rob

ps: eseller004, yep, it's been fun!

Well from what I can see they are doing things the right way! Fixing things that are broken BEFORE attracting a huge audiance....all the previous stuff has been beta testing and they have been upfront about it. I like that they started slow and are now ready to kick in gear.

The stats ( http://members.fortunecity.com/dimview/carnaby/carnaby_stats_10312001.html ) show a steady growth of...
07/17 (202) - 08/13 (3,469) - 09/01 (2,436) - 09/17 (4,502) - 10/02 (3,594) - 10/09 (4,033) - 10/31 (4,852)....seems like a healthy growth and shows a consistant growth!

I'm going to also try them out and list for their holiday extraviganza and see what happens...I can't loose cos it is still FREE! And all their future site plans are spelled out. If they keep their end of planned advertising there might actually be a chance they will be a site to be reconed with..Good Luck Carnaby...I'll be in your corner while you take this big step

Hello Jim,
I do not come to A/W that often......I like to see what is going on with "Other Auction Sites" as I know we all would like a viable alternative to you know who!!!...LOL!!!!
Not sure if I will stay or not! I do agree with Relayerone in certain things! I just am loathe to give out a CC Number is all...........I do not buy online with a CC number and I guess I am a bit paranoid about giving it out just to "Chat".
That being said, perhaps it may be a good thing.......I reserve judgment till after D Day!
I do think that Carnaby has a chance to be a great site. I have a couple of things listed there and opened a Storefront (free till Jan'2002)...I am slowly referring my customers there, but they need to get a lot more Sellers and Buyers before I do a "major" referral campaign.
In the meantime I just go with the "giant"...still hate those fees though!
I did take a brave step lately..........NO MORE PAYPAL!!!! I thought this would hurt my auctions, but it has not...so I am glad about that!
I wish you Good Luck!!!

Also Jim I do not know if you are familiar with Relayerone or Wallypog, but both are very reputable and decent kinda folks! I enjoy their posts as they are always informative and non combative! They are both very smart and know what is going on! JMO!

Sorry I have to do this. Remember what you posted above.

This is what you replied to a person complaining about the Credit Cards at Carnaby.

This is my reply to you about leaving AW cause of a Credit Card.

I think that AW wants to protect both Users and Posters against those "unwanted types"....The ABUSIVE USER and maybe also the TROLLS......so they require a CC and verify a "true ISP" addy for you.......they are a "safe" site and I am happy to give them my CC number!!!

Jim

P.S. I like Carnaby also but am a little down right now about them and this advertising and insentives thing they are doing. We will see, they hav challanged me and I may take them up on it.

Relayerone or Wallypog know of them both. Wallypog got her credits for me on SYI if I remember correctly.

I agree and I'm eagerly awaiting the promised ad campaign to start. Once traffic appears on the site I'm sure it will take off in listing numbers.
