After an extended leave, I've returned & listed 20 auctions, BUT...

Is it me, or has the place become DESERTED?

Seems the chat-boards are sparse also!

THIS IS A REAL SHAME, as they have some of the nicest tools around: MAX LOADER is FANTASTIC & the LIVE AUCTION TICKER is VERY COOL!

AND I REALLY MISS THE CONTESTS! They added a nice touch of FUN!

Oh well, I hope they aren't on the ropes! I tried Auction-BullS, but that site keeps rejecting my HTML!

This is all depressing

The Carnaby Story is very depressing. The perfect website in many ways with great management and tech support. I believe they were even advertising a bit too. If any site made it based on design and ease-of-use it should have been Carnaby. Instead it just sits there somewhat stagnant.

TOM!!!

Missed ya, love your stuff, and if you've finally added some more, I'll go take a look.

Yep, it is sad, I would have thought it would have been much more active by now. I have tried to consistantly maintain close to 200 listing there, but currently I think I only have a dozen going.

On the upshot though, my Carnaby store is generating sales, so I'm happy.

ROB: I haven't been around since my DISASTEROUS move in OCT from MA to FL! What a horror!

The movers stole my PC & just about everything that could go WRONG, DID go wrong!

But, I finally back in biz & the first thing I've noticed is this:

Before when I used to send an email to C-support, it got replied to within hours -- I sent one 48 hours ago & I'm still waiting for an answer.

Also, other than some guy & his 100,000 records (YIKES, that's a LOTTSA vinyl!), the categories are just about EMPTY -- there's your books & just about NOTHING ELSE!

THIS FEELS LIKE TBOTE --is it?

Ouch! sorry about the moving problems Tom, but glad your back up and running.

The lack of activity at Carnaby does make one scratch ones head and wonder why such a nice site is languishing. But then, I suppose I'm as much to blame as anyone because I've let my auctions drop so low, but the reality is, I have to spend the majority of my energy in the areas that produce income. A few months ago, Carnaby was my number 2 site in terms of sales, now it's dropped down to number 4. Like I said in my earlier post, I still do okay with the store, had two sales today, but on the auction side, nothing in 2 weeks. sad ain't it.

Hi Rob, do you have an opinion as to why this has happened? I personally think that the contests, the cowpoints/dollars and the referal program kinda kept the site active. Why they dropped all of it, I don't know... I worked hard for those "dollars" and poof! gone. It was discouraging to me.. and they promised another program that never materialized. I thought I would be able to use my $150.00 or so in cow dollars (I can't even remember anymore what they were called...) at some point for something... but they just "disappeared". Is their newest program on the backburner still? Have they made any mention of it lately?

Edited to correct my there/their/they're confusion....

i listed on carnaby faithfullt every week for 6 weeks. I had 10-30 items up and was happy that in a search my items were the only thing that came up. Unforunately it takes time to list and after 6 weeks of no sales I decided to better utilize my time. Wish it had worked. We need a good site so we could dump Ebay....

I think the Carnaby people went over to AuctionDiner. It's a much better place I think.

Ya right. And play with all of that funny money. It was the bidville rejects and they went back into their hole.

nice group at carnaby.used to have a super chat,,just too tiny.very few hits too bad.i could not do well there..really liked them all.
i think we all need to decide on a site & support it..it can make you happy to be the only seller in category till you realize the browsers will not come back if there is not a good variety of items..first ya need to goodies to get the buyers..
i am trying ioffer..they actually act on our suggestions ..quick..& thank us too.LOL
great chat,no list fees,,use buy nows or offers,30 or 60 day listings..& my favorite..they host a pic too.asked for counters they had em up in 2 days..
i think this site has a chance..free to try anyway..nice quality items too..
used to be e-wanted..check it out..super 2nd site for anyone, maybe they will grow & we can make them our 1st site..
i think they will have a wonderful xmas season since it is so fast for the people to make an offer, you accept or counter..that is it..pretty kewl..plus they will not put up with fraud period..have software called carnivore, looks to be working really well some great deals there too..oh yes..what we have been wanting for years too you can import your feedback from other sites....good luck wherever you list

I hope one of the small sites catches on and become the dominant third tier site. The really nice ones like Carnaby and SellYourItem seem to lack that certain something required to get a lot of listings. If one site could catch fire there would probably be mass defections from the other third tier sites.

you are right, sellyouritem is a neat site easy fun nice people, these sites just don't seem to get the volume & diversity of items to get going really well.i know of another site making changes & it will be good too, but the volume must be there.ioffer has a large base of previous members from e-wanted & i think that is why they have a good chance, also it is something innovative, different actually fun.
those droves really need to rally around one 2nd site they could accomplish so much.hope it happens

It has been said time and time again here that Carnaby has definite "possibility". Well set out, a bulkloader to beat all bulk loaders, first-rate tech and support staff. What l they lack is the advertising and while it's been hinted at and promised, other than the net radio advert that has been mentioned here (and I heard it a couple of time and it seemed OK to me other than being maybe a tad too long), it hasn't really been forthcoming.

I noticed they have launched a School Donor Program aligned with Cash Cow Lotto. Users choose the school/s of their choice and them each time they play Lotto, the school is awarded a donation.

Carnaby needs to target their market and start firing - not scatter shots but well placed, consistent advertising to bring in both buyers and sellers. And they need to do it fast before even the party faithful start to lose faith....

a few of us told them it was urgent over a year ago.you have a key point, but even with ads there needs to be quite a bit more listed to grow.
I have noticed no matter how nice a site,or owner or support is if they are not savvy business people they are clueless.Shockingly Many have never even listed an item have no idea what we need I feel everyone working in management at sites needs to be required to have run some auctions or listings to understand what we need
I read in a newsletter tonite about a neat idea a new company came up with to let your bidders click to get on an email list...people joined & i think paid the sellers paid for this.(beleive there are free sites to provide this also)..well one of their customer's auctions at ebay were shut down.now this poor company is sorry & wanting to work something out with ebay according to the article..
you mean they never checked this out before starting a company??for auctions email addy harvesting on the listings?? unreal they could have come here & gotten the answer from any of us it is not allowed period.my point if they had been required to run auctions they would have known this..too bad..i doubt there will be anything worked out but you never know..really gotta do your homework..
in fact i had to literally beg yahoo to put a link on their home auctions page to search SELLER a year ago they finally did this was when all the people were going their due to checkout fiasco..i mean it is hard for newbies to yahoo to find their favorite sellers but without that link it would have been even worse..how could they not know this stuff????? i am floored

How much do you think Carnaby.com is worth?

About $5,000 - $10,000 . That's mostly because of the software/modifications and a little for name recognition.

They'd have to get lucky to find a buyer even at that low price.

what a shame yikes, i checked Carnaby antiques category, just 2 listings on the entire site for antiques? is that right?

To compare Ioffer has over 750 in antiques,i am making sales there..i think having enough items on a site may be more important than we ever thought.I think ioffer will be the new site for xmas this year that will do really well people seem ready for something new & different, also since they allow website links many big sellers will probably use them as a 2nd site..

good luck everyone wherever you sell
