This is one of the reasons Yahoo began fees to kick that stuff off. People list items at double the cost they paid. All bidville has is the yahoo rejects.

I agree there is quite a difference in the Britney dolls. But blairwitch, most B&M double the prices too, what are you getting at? Should people sell for a few penny profit? What is your mark-up? Mine is always 100% (double) of the price I paid for the item.

This is a high end rare doll. The ebay seller paid $1.40 to list the doll [ used 2 categories and 2 xtra Ipix photos ]
The prices are close but .....
This clearly illustrates that BV is much easier on the pocketbooks of the sellers there because they can wait and wait till any unsaavy buyer appears for their doll. Just $5/year if the seller host their own photos.
This also clearly illustrates that the saavy buyers of higher end collectible and non-collectible items can get a better variety and better price at eBay. Two or three years ago there were many unsaavy buyers and the seller could use the auction sites other than ebay but that has changed now. That is why ebay has more than 42 million registered users. The good buys are there and the buyers amost all know it.
edited to add:
Also these rare, hard-to-find items are not so rare or hard to find anymore with 7 plus million items on ebay and 100 plus million items on Half.com . The strategy of using sites like BV is fading. The BV sellers of items such as these use to be able to say if it doesn't sell it will only go up in value for me but that is no longer completely true. The value my rise but the number of items on ebay/half also rises and the number of saavy buyers rises as well.

I've seen the same thing happen right on ebay though, jimtaxi. Sometimes the price difference make me actually laugh out loud. Sellers are the same everywhere. When I first started buying on BidVille the prices were so low I felt like a thief for winning at the prices I did. The prices have gone up substantially on many things now. So much so that I always check ebay first before I bid.

Kodi, The big difference is that the sellers on ebay that list an item at a higher than going price may get lucky a sell their item but risk paying large listing fees if another seller beat him to a buyer with a lower price for the same item. Those damn listing fees sting like a bee when the item does not sell. There is zero risk of failure of losing any listing fee on BV and that attracts the sellers that want to park their items.
Sometimes when I want to get an item on ebay and I do a search for the item on both current and closed items I see the wide variance in prices for the same exact item. Almost always the lower priced items get the sale and most of the very high priced items never get a bid at all. I say ouch, those high price sellers should have researched the price of their item before throwing those listing fees away.

There is another point of view about Ebay. It's too cumbersome to search through.
If I am looking for an unusual, specific item, I start a search for it and have email sent when one is listed.
But when I just want to browse through the categories where I collect, Ebay has gotten so slow that it is too time consuming for me. I will go to Bidville or to Yahoo and check their listings daily. Doesn't take but a few minutes, and I still find wonderful bargains there. Some are wildly overpriced, but the bargains are there if you're willing to check regularly. On Ebay, things may start out at a bargain price, but they escalate quickly.
Furthermore, I feel comfortable buying at Bidville. I've been buying there since the site opened, and have yet to run into a bad seller. Only one at Yahoo in 4 years, and he no longer is allowed to sell there. Several of us complained about him, and now he's gone.
On the other hand, Power Sellers at Ebay may cheat, insult, and scam buyers, and Ebay won't touch them.

When it comes to money, people look long and hard for the very best bargain and price. Those hard to find collectibles are not so hard to find anymore.
ebay is a horrible place to sell items for sellers but a real heaven on earth for shoppers. WallMart is not Number One because of those pleasant greeters at their doors but because they have the lowest prices and best selection of most items. BV and the other small sites can not hope to compete against ebay and Yahoo.

Typical reply from bidville crowd. I do pity the few good sellers there.
jimtaxi ebay really is a waste of time and money for many sellers. I listed 50 items for a friend and she dident cover the fees, so now there going to yahoo. I moved to yahoo several months ago and havent looked back. eBay shoved checkout down sellers throats and it wasnt until yahoo announced their new fee structure that they backed down. eBay is very afraid of yahoo and they should be. All bidville has are the items that left yahoo when they began fees. One book seller has thousands of books warehoused on bidville.

It's got to be a tough fight when ebay has everything and everything at very low prices. The specialized sites are fighting back and striking gold by being on a site for a narrow range of items for collectors.
Some posters like Bearmon have stated that they mine BV for bargains and that's a good idea as many sellers may on BV may not research the true value of their item and offer it at a very low price. By the way, the same thing can be done at ebay with its cobstant flow of brand new sellers.
So what is Bidville's goal? They are not a specialized or niche site and they are not a direct competitor of ebay. Is there any real future for the site?

There is a reason for the 'constant inflow of new sellers' at Ebay. That's where everyone starts, because it's all they know. I sold on Ebay for 2 years before I got smart and started looking for better places. A lot of the veteran sellers have done the same thing. We're smart enough to know we don't have to give Ebay all of our money, we're industrious enough to hunt for the good small sites, and dedicated enough to work to build those small sites.
Any fool can sell on Ebay and many do. The advertising is done for them, the newbies are lined up waiting to spend their money, so they can say they 'bought on Ebay'. It takes talent to make a living on the smaller sites. I guess that's why Ebay is so big-you guys just don't have what it takes to leave Big Brother. You'd rather stay where it's safe and complain about the treatment you get there than take a chance.

bearmom your post almost brought tears to my eyes because its so true! The reason ebay is #1 people think ebay is the only venue out there. I have friends who whine to me about the ebay fees taking their profit and I tell them try yahoo! I get the same answer...Um does yahoo have auctions?? It is so frustrating to me. Newbie sellers think they can make a fortune on ebay, but reality sets in with the fees. Buyers and sellers need educated when it comes to online auctions. If only every ebay seller would list 10 items on yahoo the ebay monopoly would be destroyed. It would cost .50 for each seller. I am converting my friends to yahoo, and hopefully others will too.

The ebay fees are not that bad if a seller actually sells their item. The only fee that really stings is the large listing fee that gets eaten by the sellers when their item fails to sell. The ebay fees are actually very small when compared to Amazon, Half.com or Yahoo Warehouse. Yet the damn listing fee is the whole secret of ebay's success. With the large listing fee in place the sellers have to make their prices competitive with the other sellers or risk losing their listing fee and not selling their item. There is no way to warehouse items on ebay like most other sites. Only a very small percentage of users that try selling on ebay make enough to stick around. The rest either give up or head off to the lesser sites.
Like it or not, that is why ebay is an 800 pound gorilla.
