I've been looking at the listed items totals on the Bidville home page and saw it peak at 1,119,000 plus items a few days ago and a steady decline has ensued. The number is now at 1,096,000 plus items.
Any theories out there why the number has declined so much so rapidly? There have always been flucuations in the number before but this decline is very sizable and steady.

I would bet it is because of yahoo's FLD.

I've been watching it too, and I'm more inclined to think that something else is happening. At first I thought that relists of inactive & non-verified Sellers were finally running out, but the drop has been steady across the board in categories, with sportcards showing a large drop. That, along with the fact that the Today's Featured Sellers selection process has been revised to eliminate re-selection of any Seller in a 30 day period... it stands to reason that cleaning up inactive accounts might make that selection even more efficient.

Of course all of this is just theory, but it makes more sense to me than everyone running to Yahoo like they've suddenly seen the light because Yahoo isn't going to charge them a nickle for one day. That's a little bit ridiculous.

barncards1 is probably right, I had all of mine end a few weeks ago, I renewed a few. Yahoo's FLD could have hurt a little, but now that is over and alot of people still won't pay listing fees.

I believe the answer is pretty simple. Been watching the numbers for several months. When there are big fluctuations in the total number, there is almost the same change in the sports card numbers. This happens when the number changes in either direction. I believe what is happening that the auctions expire for some of the large listers of commons causing the numbers to drop and then they rise when they relist them.

You may be correct Stavescards but the number has now grown to a 29,000 item decline. Some card sellers must have either found a new venue to place their inventories of cards or they have given up relisting the cards.

It's been two short days days since I first started this thread and the decline and now grown to 38,000 items. Interesting.

Make that a 44,000 item decline.

Now it's a 53,000+ decline in three days. THe decline appears to have come mostly in the hockey cards section in the sports area of Bidville.

Most likely a seller who warehouses his items on bidville did not relist them, or maybe he wont due to the low sell thru rate. Some did go on yahoo last week, and ebays numbers dropped as well. Bidville is just saturated with SMC junk, and common cards.

Hard to image tens of thousands of hockey cards listed by one or a few sellers.
Here's a theory. Originally Bidville opened with great fanfare and with a very unique 99 auto-relists, which was very attractive to the Yahoo refugees as those Yahoo auto relists had steadily shrunk from 5 to 3 to 2 relists.
Bidville saw the error of its ways and ammend the relisting number to only 10 but then back up to 20 quickly thereafter. To get the maximum exposure and the shortest waiting period for bidders of their auctions many clever sellers set the auction duration at a minimal 3 day period.
Here's the theory. With a 3 day duration set or reset to the maximum 20 auto relists that equals two months. The huge listing decline started about 60 days after the 01/16/02 pay-or-you-can-no-longer-list verification deadline. Some sellers had possibly set their auctions on one last run at 3 days each for 20 auto relists.
That could be it or something similar.

Blairwitch,
I was just wondering if you ever play a different tune? What does it matter to you about Bidville?

Blairwitch would prefer that BV change to suit her needs, and no one's listening so she drones on and on.

Blairwitch would like for all low end items to vanish off the face of the earth so that her high dollar items will be more visible.

Blairwitch thinks people who sell low end items such as die-cast cars are beneath her, and looks down on any Seller that bothers to take an armload of low end items to the Post Office.

Blairwitch is annoyed when low end Sellers are successful, and doesn't take into account that her lack of sales may be directly due to her own failures as a Seller and would like to blame BV now. I just wonder who Blairwitch blamed before BV?

Many sellers have almost no options but to sell on Bidville or similar sites because of what they sell.
Now for example, say a seller buys dolls for resale but wants to double their money. That is increasing difficult on the big auction sites as competitive forces have driven prices very low. The only alternative for these sellers is on the $5 a year Bidville where they can hope for a buyer to chance by. That is why the free listing days at Yahoo and eBay are so attractive to these sellers, a free chance at exposing their items on a site that actually has traffic.

Excellent post robert. Below is the bidville listings before and after the yahoo FLD.

03-11 1,118,351 573,243 (51.3%) 299,255 (26.8%) 245,853
03-18 1,066,597 545,998 (51.2%) 299,236 (28.1%) 221,363

As you can see the FLD was on the 12th and the listings dropped way off. If yahoo keeps having a FLD monthly the counts at bidville will continue to drop. Like you said sellers need to expose their items on a site with traffic.

I am being very civil, I do not understand your fascination with bidville. If you do not list there, why does it matter to you? Do you run people down because of their different looks, beliefs, etc.? You are clearly very emotional about bidville. Maybe Sketer said something to you.

deichen,

I care about the good sellers on bidville and I think they are being cheated. I will continue to fight for these people. I dont know who this "sketer" is. I am part of the bidville watchdog group.

I am afraid I do not understand at all! How can the good sellers of bidville be cheated? They are all there on their own free will. They can go to Ebay, Yahoo or any other site. It is everyone's choice. That is not cheated. If they choose to stay at bidville, then why should you feel sorry for them? I doubt any of them need someone to fight for them. Most of them are quite capable of fighting for themselves! This is very evident on the chats!

Blairwitch, who the hell do you think you are fooling?

The only possible reason I can think of for you acting like you do is that you probably got your butt kicked off of Bidville, so you want to get even or something.

I sell on Bidville, and I resent your "HELPING" me.

You are not my mother, sister, nor protector.

Why don't you just go help the good people on Ebay?

SHEESH, next you'll be telling us you are Joan of Arc, reborn.

The decline is now at 58,000 plus. Actually that only works out to be a 5% drop.
But a 23,000 drop was interesting and a 58,000 drop is very interesting. Seems like the stock market a bit.

deichen from reading the boards at bidville many have closed up shop and moved on. I think its sad because under the right management the site could grow and prosper. As of today bidville is a haven for low end warehoused items. They charge membership fees and give nothing in return. The poor sellers are still waiting for the owner to give them answers, but it looks like he flew the coop!

Sorry, I didn't see this before now, but...

Notice: Three day auctions may auto-relist one time. All others may relist up to 20 times.

I thought you'd want to know you are in error Robertsmithson.

Thank you. That info is only available to verified members. I'll make a minor modication to my original post and say "With a 5 day duration set or reset to the maximum 20 auto relists that equals three plus months."
