I've been watching the statistical information at bidville too. From two sets of numbers gathered on 1/01/03 and 1/29/03 I've found an increase in submissions in these categories:

Antiques & Art: 195 auctions added
BidVille Motors: 439 "
Clothing & Baby: 795 "
Collectibles: 877 "
Crafts & Hobbies: 646 "
Jewelry & Gems: 340 "
Miscellaneous: 492 "
Music Stuff: 5279 "
Pottery & Glass: 334 "
Sports Stuff: 604 "
Toys & Games: 825 "

I hope you don't mind the addendum to your figures. I like to see more detailed information. I don't sell sport cards or books and have no use for that information. I'm trying to understand what the point of your figures are, actually. What is it you are trying to illustrate?

"What is it you are trying to illustrate?"

That Bidville is 85% Sports cards and books (86.6% to be currently accurate). The other categories are practically non-existant or statistically insignificant.

Who would take any site seriously that had less than 1000 items in the individual categories you listed?

If a site has something I want, and the price is right, I could care less how many items they have listed in any given category.

Are you telling us that a shopper stumbles into a site, finds an item they've been searching for, at a great price, then stops and says to himself, "well now, I don't know if I can take this site seriously, and buy this item I want, at such a great price, until I see if this site has enough other items listed in it's categories to make it a serious site? " lol !

I have quite a few buyers (just buyers, not sellers)at Bidville that would disagree wholeheartedly with your statement. (Oh, did I mention that I don't sell sports cards?)

Many Ebay and Yahoo sellers would be amazed at how many of their buyers are being unfaithful to them with us lowly Bidville sellers.

The numbers listed represent additional auctions that have been submitted to categories between the beginning and end of January. They are not the total number of auctions in those categories. You can find that information on the bidville home page.

So, the purpose of the statistics as presented is to make bidville look bad. I would imagine that may be why the sportcard sales seem to be picking up pace. Many card sellers are reporting robust sales! Thanks for letting people know!

If you compared the other category listings at bidville to other small sites, how would bidville measure up? About the same number of items, fewer, or more items to choose from in comparison?

Since bidville separated the sportcards from the other listings why is the number of sportcards even an issue for you? It looks more like a plus to me, and I bet the card sellers appreciate having a place to list their cards that isn't cutting into their profits.

Bidville is a great site, very seller friendly and froogle will bring in more buyers. I don't understand your animosity unless you've had some personal experience at bidville that has scarred you for life. What gives?

Sportscards are fading very rapidly in popularity. Yu-Gi-Oh cards, Magic the Gathering cards and other magic-type cards are what the current generation of kids collect. They will be the adults of tomorrow and most do NOT like sports at all. Only a few male adults are buying the near-worthless and over-produced sportscards. It's dying and faster then you realize.

Hello Robert,

You seem to have regained your composure. I think you're wrong about sport cards. Even if sales seem to be flagging at this time, I would imagine a cutback in production would boost the interest considerably. Once a collector, always a collector.

Right, and the new generation doesn't care about Mantle or Mays or even Michael Vick. It will take a while for the current collectors to die out but they are going. Ever been to a huge sportscard show? Almost every booth is clogged with shoppers looking at the sellers tables and display cases. Almost, except for the sellers that sell the old pre-1960 cards. Usually there is not a soul at those vendors except for an occassional old timer trying to sell his old cards to the seller. That's what the "Ghost of Christmas Future" will look like to the current sportscard sellers.

The internet is draining the interest and money of the next generation of potential collectors. Online games at $10 or $20 per month, not to mention the Vice City game CDs that cost $50 each. Even if there was interest in cardboard pieces of sports trivia the new generation shuns the old generations hobby. They want their own "thing".

The biggest shock is how quickly bidville is losing their items other than the book showcase and cards. 13,482 items lost in 6 months = 2,247 items monthly. Take away the showcase seller and the percentage of cards soars over 80% which is incredible.

Bidville doesn't have a showcase seller, they have a seller that has a lot of books. The seller is in no way showcased that I can see. Should they tell the seller to pack his bags? Why? Should they limit his submissions when they don't limit any other seller? Why? You are implying that the seller is getting special consideration, when in fact he is no different than any other seller at bidville other than his number of auctions. He is also no different than the many power sellers at ebay. Good for him!

I'm willing to bet that Bidville offers a higher number of non-sport card category auctions when compared to ANY of the other small sites, or even Yahoo for that matter.

The sport cards have been separated to give the other category items more exposure. If bidville is overwhelmed with sport cards I certainly don't see it and I'm there on a daily basis, so separating them must have worked nicely.

You have done a great job bringing sport card buyers to bidville. Thank you! Keep up the effort!

To begin with, sportscards always have and will be a staple for collectors. The popularity may wane and wax, but it won't ever go away, anymore than carnival glass or oriental rugs. The truly old cigarette cards and sports cards have remained popular for 100 years, and their price increases with their age. That seems like a pretty steady pace of growth to me.
Furthermore, if those sports card sellers bring traffic to the site, God bless 'em. If the sports enthusiasts shop there, their wives can't be far behind.

Excellent place to buy and sell. Sellers go out of their way to find and item you are looking for. Price is always right. And the world is starting to find BV bigtime. All it takes is dedicated members and patience.

Way to go Bidville.

Bidville will soon become a sports niche site. The 6 month stats show the only growth with cards. The showcase seller should be gone as well, nothing but stagnation.

Such gloom and doom.

Bidville is here to stay, and has more "other category" auctions to offer than other small sites as well as a large inventory of sport cards. It's a place for the whole family to shop.

BW

Your yahoo stats are done up just like the Bidville stats. The break down of every category. I really like you ebay break down to.

For someone who does not list on a site or buy from a site you write way to much about the site. It has problems and can be improved but so can all the others.

By your reasoning Yahoo will have no listings soon. The have dropped over 100,000 listings since December. That is all of the categories to.

Thanks Davey
