Do a search on eBay and you have a choice. Search by title only or by title and description, which often means the difference between some listings or alot of listings.
Although Yahoo!Auctions is in death throes for other reasons, they even allow for advanced searches.
But then you visit the "other online auctions" and find that your searches are limited to title only.
I believe that buyers are less likely to find items of interest when they cannot search both title and description and, of course, they cannot place a bid on what they cannot find.
All the "other online auctions" have less-than-attractive sell-through rates. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why.

hmmmm...never really thought about it before...i do title only searches and normally find exactly what i'm looking for...maybe it just depends on if you are looking for a specific item vs. whatever??

Description searches are a bargain hunters best tool. There are sellers out there that do NOT know what to put in their titles; thus, thier items will get overlooked unless one uses a description search.
