OK, so what exactly are the benefits to me of paying nearly 2% plus 25 cents come October 1? (We're talking about a business account here.) Right now, I don't see very much that makes business accounts very "special", or at least special enough to warrant the fees that lots of other sellers are avoiding! I'm beginning to feel like a sap. I just PayPal'd money to another used book dealer (not an eBay seller) and lo and behold, his account came up as a "verified PERSONAL account." Lawyer be damned, I'm thinking of cancelling my business account and starting up another personal account. Hmmm, so remind me what I'm getting for my fees. When PayPal goes international next month, is that option going to be available to both personal and business accounts?

Hi,

International will be available to personal and business accounts.

The fees are the credit card transaction items at cost. We are not marking up the transaction costs like other services can and our hopes are to make money off of the float, but this requires a substantial amount of volume.

We also keep designing features that business accounts want to help increase their sales (Web Accept, etc).

I've been kinda thinking the same thing.
I mainly signed up so I could ditch ccnow on my web site and go strickly paypal but not until after I signed up did I realize that there is no "shopping cart". Just individual sales, which I don't normally have since I sell supplies. Now I'm stuck volumless paying these fees (ugh!) on tiny $5 & less items.
Any possibility of getting coding for a variety of multiple items on the web buttons?

Hi,

Just to keep this in a positive frame of mind, we are also developing a shopping cart feature

Damon -
PayPal has been promising "soon" for intrnational and shopping carts for MONTHS! It wuold have been MUCH better to roll them out a month or two BEFORE this fee announcement.

Your "auction payment" explanation page still says "Always FREE for consumers, low rates for businesses"
http://www.paypal.x.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/gen/personal_vs_business-outside is a comparison chart ... and again the personal accounts are listed as all things FREE, including auction services.

I'm using my PERSONAL credit card for my PERSONAL PayPal account. AT WHAT POINT DO I BECOME A BUSINESS??? Neither the IRS. the State fo A, nor the City of Phoenix consider me to be a "business" for their purposes - I have no resale number and do not nitend to get one.

What criteria is PayPal using? Does my selling my aunt's hammered aluminum vase make me a "business"? Does dumping a bunch of old books I no longer need make me a "business"? Your terms page does NOT help me at all.

PayPalDamon: Shopping Cart feature does not excite me or, I suspect, any other small part-time seller (or any seller for that matter) that does not have their own website from which to sell things. Nor have I been having wet-dreams about 24 hour customer service or any of the other "perks" of the PayPal business account. And I do NOT like, especially, being forced to have one.

When I logged into Paypal today, there was a message page that says YOU DO have to upgrade to a premier/business account if you auction because they consider it a business. It also says they are looking into ways to verify if you are doing business under a personal account! You then have to click on a button that says" I'm not a seller" to enter; or upgrade right then.

Let's attempt the truth here. "The fees are the credit card transaction items at cost."

The following examples are not credit card transactions!

Bank Account payments 1.9%
PayPal Balance payments 1.9%

PPD--PLEASE, can you explain what fees PayPal has to cover in the following NON-CREDIT CARD transactions?

Bank Account payments 1.9%
PayPal Balance payments 1.9%

speedticket, try reading the threads on this subject. Now ANYbody that sells ANYthing is considered a business by Paypal and WILL be FORCED to sign up for a business account. THAT is what all the "whining" is about.

If you can't stand the heat,
get out of the kitchen.

If you can't stand losing a couple of bucks to get paid $100.00 in a fast, secure and hassle-free way, go one step back to accept checks and M.O.'s only... again.

Done.

Not because of the fees, but because of the lies.

I'm obviously missing something here. I haven't heard anything about this until right now, and I didn't see anything when I logged into my PayPal account a few minutes ago. I'm going to turn on the email feature, so can somebody clue me in???

Thanks!!!

Pam

PayPal will upgrade my account when they pry it from my cold, dead hands. Or something like that.

I AM NOT A BUSINESS!

I WILL NOT PAY BUSINESS FEES!

If PayPal had, all along, said that there would be fees on the personal accounts, then I'd have no problem. But now they've gone and changed the very definition of Business and Premier accounts.

This is not what we were led to believe would happen. I call that a bald-faced lie. What does that make Damon?

preacher4u, if you'll read my post closely, you'll see one of my main complaints is that I was not on an even playing field with other sellers, who were avoiding fees. Obviously, the hoo-hah here on AW regarding PP's recent announcement has changed all of that.

Nice try. Thanks for playing our game. The IRS and all 50 states have specific criteria for use in differentiating between a business and a hobby. Just because a person buys and sells goods does not mean they are a business.

Power Sellers are about the only ones who could benefit from using a business account at paypal. My sales are nowhere near the point I need any other services that paypal offers.

I finally "bit the bullet" and signed up for a business account with PayPal about a month ago.

The primary reason I did so was for the "web Accept" feature.

So far, I'm very pleased with the results- I have a couple of little web stores, and because of the Web Accept feature, not only are my sales up in general, total $ spent per customer is up considerably.

If I were willing to go through the expense & hassle of a regular merchant account, This may be less important, but for me PayPal is a significant feature in my bottom line. Could I get by without it? Sure. But it is a convenience to my customers and a boon to my profits.

Personally, I'm looking forward to a PayPal shopping cart- when I accepted only checks & money orders, most (70%) of my customers bought only one item at a time. Now, with PayPal Web Accept, even though it only currently accepts one item at a time, many more customers are purchasing multiple items. A shopping cart will improve this even more.

Could PayPal have handled all of this better?
WITHOUT A DOUBT.

If I were a casual auction seller or buyer only, would I be happy about the changes?
NO WAY.

Will I give up PayPal because they have made mistakes in both PR issues and in their business model?

NO, (as long as the "hassle level" remains low and they make my business more profitable.)

Edited because either I can't spell, or can't type or both
