I mainly sell books & clothes on eBay. It's just a hobby for me (even the IRS doesn't consider it a business). I think I've had three items (out of approx. 150) end at over $20.00.

We're the ones really screwed by PayPal's new fee structure. 1.9% + 25 cents doesn't sound like much but - on my typical sale - it will work out to 8 - 10 percent of my profit!!!

(I buy a book for $1.00, sell for $5.00. Shipping is $2.00. 1.9% of total transaction ($7.00) is 14 cents. Plus 25 cents equals 39 cents. My profit was only $4.00 - that works out to right at 10%!!!)

I've put up with eBay's rule changes and general recent lack of consideration for small sellers because they provided (in my estimation) a unique 'venue' that doesn't exist elsewhere. PayPal is not in the same position.

It's really a shame. I believed in PayPal. I guess I was just a sap for trusting them.

I want to respond to the accusation that PayPal somehow lied about its policy. This is untrue and unfair. Please read below to have a better description on the issue.

The login reminder page restates a policy that has been in place for months. The facts:

1. Below, in full, is the email that we sent to users in July. The relevant portion clearly states that "businesses using PayPal are required by our terms of use to create a Business Account."

2. A clear "Rules" box on our "Personal vs. Premier/Business Account" page (which highlights the differences between account types) states the requirement that businesses must sign up for a business account. This box has been on our site since June.

3. Our terms of use have also stated for weeks that if you are using PayPal to conduct "e-commerce on a regular basis," you need to sign up for, or upgrade to, a Premier or Business account.

We have always said that PayPal is free for personal use. That remains true today. We have also always said that business use requires a Premier or Business account.

I realize that there are a number of occasional sellers who want clarification on what constitutes business use. Obviously, there is a big difference between the occasional seller who sells one beanie babie a month, and a seller who sells dozens of items per month. Today's reminder was only directed at sellers who conduct e-commerce on a regular basis.

It is not possible for PayPal to subsidize these businesses and continue to provide this service for all.

barbarake - I too sell items that rarely go very high in price. I just closed down my Paypal account and will go back to the money order - check routine. My bottom line is low enough without the added expense.
Not skyline8 on eBay.

I, too, am what I like to call a "sport" seller - I've got some books I don't read and CD's I don't listen to and I peddle some of them on ebay. Rarely do I turn more than a buck or two profit when all is said and done, and it's certainly not worth 1.9%. Guess I'll be taking that Paypal logo off my auctions....
