I dl'ed it, and upon trying to open it I keep getting a message saying..."ampro has performed an illegal operation and is closing down". The file seems to be corrupted. Whats goin on?
You are doing this on the machine with no copy of Pro on it right now, correct?
First make sure you have closed out of everything before you try to run the installer.
I downloaded this same old version just a moment ago to make sure there was no error with the file, and was able to run through a complete install without error.
If you continue to have trouble loading this copy, delete it. Then, making sure you have disabled any other programs in the background (especially anti-virus) - go ahead and download a new copy. Additionally, download it to another directory other than the place you saved it to last. Try your 'My Documents' folder instead of your desktop, or vise versa depending on where you sent it last.
When your done downloading, close out of your browser (which should leave you with nothing open) and try running the installer once more.

I did exactly as you suggested, and got the message...."windows cannot run this program because it is in an invalid format" ..... what next?
Not sure what other workarounds you can try to stop from corrupting the file upon download. One of the above mentioned tricks should have taken care of the problem. You can try saving it to yet another location other than the two already attempted, but chances are something else on your machine is probably causing it.
Outside of closing out of the programs listed in your systray, use the 'CTRL+ALT+DEL' option to pull up your task manager and manually 'End Task' on all running programs other than Explorer, Systray, and Internet Explorer before you click to download the software again. Perhaps you have something still running in the background that is only available to close out of using this option.
note : When you 'end task' on one program, you have to 'CTRL+ALT+DEL' again to pull the task list back up. Be careful, it is very easy to hit 'CTRL+ALT+DEL' twice and restart by mistake when doing this.
